Three bands, two cities, happy fans

The Blackdiamondskye tour might be the biggest concert series of the year. The tour spans one month and three bands have come together to provide a unique rock'n'roll experience.

Deftones drummer Abe Cunningham said, "The tour just kind of happened. We have been friends with the guys from Alice In Chains for quite a while."

In fact, it was not just that they knew the Seattle grunge gods but also because both Deftones and Alice In Chains had the same producer for their last records.

Vocalist for the Sacramento band Chino Moreno releases guttural shrieks during a concert Oct. 8 at Key Arena in Seattle. The concert was part of the month-long Blackdiamondskye tour in support of the Seattle band, Alice in Chains.
"Nick Raskulinecz produced both of our records. We were going into the studio with him right as they were finishing Black Gives Way To Blue so we met up and rekindled our friendship," Cunningham said.

Cunningham said Mastodon wasn't just on the bill because they are cool dudes.

"We are both on the same label and have the same management. It just kind of made sense," Cunningham said.

On Oct. 8 and 9 Mastodon, Deftones and Alice In Chains appeared in Seattle and Portland.
One fan, Kelly Adams had never been to a rock concert until attending this show.

"Unless you count Afroman, I have never been to a 'real' concert." Adams said.

Fan Derick Jones said he has been to many shows.
"I have been following Deftones around the West Coast for a while now. I saw them in Sacramento and Spokane a few months back. Now, I am getting an opportunity to see them tonight in Seattle and tomorrow in Portland," Jones said.

However, Brian Jones said he was not at the venue to see Deftones.

"I just can't get over the style of vocals," Wise said, "I like the rest of the band but the singer sucks."

Casey Ward, fan, said he was only there to see one band — Mastodon.

"Mastodon just kicks ass. I'm a big metal fan so I am here to see Mastodon. We saw Alice In Chains at the Salem Armory in Oregon earlier this year so seeing them again just made sense," Ward said.

Atlanta-based metal band Mastodon started the show. Both nights Mastodon played a short set of deft progressive rock and metal. At some points it was difficult to differentiate songs, but Mastodon is not a band that one can be a casual fan of. Throughout their sets in Seattle and Portland the fans were mellow until the hardcore fans started moshing in the pit. There were signs of life at this point as the band closed with "Blood and Thunder" off their album Leviathan.

The middle act, Deftones, seemed to captivate the audience from the opening riff of "Rocket Skates," to the end of their set. Deftones delivered an impressive, high energy set with vocalist Chino Moreno at the helm. Moreno has progressed as a performer and it shows, he worked the crowd into frenzy. At one point Moreno climbed atop his Orange guitar cabinets — which were almost seven feet in the air, and jumped back down to the stage.

The band's set was a manic rollercoaster ride that included the band's most hardcore tracks followed by the most melancholy.

After Moreno finished sharing impressive guttural shrieks with the audience the band closed with "7 Words," a song off their debut album. The audience responded in a way that made it seem they thought it was a travesty Deftones set ended so soon.

After a short break, the stage was widened and a huge wide curtain shrouded the stage. Colorful sets of lights were aimed at the curtain, which was used to make the gigantic screen appear like a massive kaleidoscope.  The band's shadows surfaced on the screen a few minutes after the Blackdiamondskye logo flashed on the curtain. These effects may be featured on the 3D movie Alice In Chains is recording on the tour.

"They had cameras everywhere (and) it was really cool to see," Cunningham said.
Alice In Chains opened with "Them Bones" off their second album Dirt, followed by "Dam That River" and "Rain When I Die."

Some fans may agree that vocalist William DuVall's voice was a dead ringer for the late Layne Staley. If one were to close their eyes, they would have sworn that it was Staley on Saturday night. DuVall brings a soulful vocal and fantastic stage presence to the role of lead singer for a band like Alice In Chains. He moved across the stage with ease but never overdid it. In fact, DuVall's edition has given new life to the band.

Jerry Cantrell, Mike Inez and Sean Kinney appeared to be feeling the music as they performed alongside DuVall. They also played new tracks such as "Check My Brain," "Your Decision" and "Lesson Learned," from their latest album Black Gives Way To Blue and songs from their back catalog. The band played a short set in Portland but in Seattle they brought down the house closing with "Man in the Box" and "Would?" both nights.

Following the show in Seattle Adams said, "It was more than I expected. Mastodon was good, kind of like groovy metal and Deftones were amazing. Alice In Chains put on an awesome show, of course, but Chino Moreno of Deftones just oozed charisma and helped me feel the music."
Other concertgoers could be heard stating almost the exact same words.

The Blackdiamondskye tour continues through California and ends in Las Vegas Oct. 16. Alice In Chains and Mastodon do not have future tour dates planned currently but Deftones plan to say on the road. Immediately after they wrap this tour the band is flying to Europe to tour with fellow rockers from New York, Coheed and Cambria.
