I think he's just saying that he didn't write the songs. Like he wrote ohms, that's Stephen's song. But the rest is full band, everyone has their hands in it.

He also says he plays the 9 string in a couple of the songs, it's not super present but it's there.

He did mention it was mostly chino and sergio's idea. Doesn't mean he did not contribute more on these ideas than on gore. But after his meshuggah comments, it all makes sense IMO, and I trust chino more to keep deftones sounding like deftones than Stef.

Stef's Corona talk is just embarrassing. It's a good thing shows are cancelled right now. Yeah, the average person is likely to survive, but if it weren't for social distancing and mask policies, deaths of the sick and elderly would go through the roof again. Hard to see such an inspiring musician be so susceptible to conspiracies and Trump's lies.

I also want to say I wouldn't mind if Stef took a lot more of the creative lead, especially guitar tone wise. The breakdown of Rats is as death metal as it gets and I really wish I could hear some more of THOSE Deftones.

I prefer Stephen's melodic yet heavy riffs (ie KimDracula, street carp... all of ATF) over his djent CHUGCHUGCHUG riffs. It's great in small doses but it gets old fast.

I completely agree, songs like Doomed User, Rats, even his riff on DE are like that CHUGGA CHUGGA and they are not necessarily that brilliant sounding. I like the songs don't get me wrong but to me they sound exactly what it is: Stef doing Meshuggah while the rest of the band does their thing. They're more interesting songs are when they are just them, i.e. BQAD, Digital Bath, etc.

Same.  I've always thought of Stef's trademark sound as the brash/bright/dissonant tones that he's able to achieve and are very unique to him, as is his overall tone.  The djent riffs are a bit derivative and start pigeonholing their sound.  One of the upsides of having Chino on guitar is that it offsets some of that by both the sounds themselves but also the way it forces Stef to work around it.
