it's good to have new fans. they need all they can get

catchy compared to the self titled. but its better than S/T in my opinion.
for sure, better than s/t and snw

not better than s/t, but its better than snw and atf. i think its on the same level as wp

illzilla

Well,..... you can please some of the people some of the time, but you can't please every fucking deftones fan. I see it
as a victory for the band, Mabey catchy, but c'mon . Change, Minerva,  Be Quiet and Drive,  They've always had a
crossover potential, the only sad thing is that they didn't pick the "catchy" songs as singles yet.
Either way , its a GREAT album!

deafnotes

the diamond eyes song is kinda catchy

Gerardo

I also thought the song structures on this album were "catchy" and "radio friendly". This album will probably gain them more exposure this way although I don't see this as selling out. I'd do the same shit if my homie was in a coma

Dienekes

What the he'll does Chi being in a coma have to do with anything??? WTF.....

would a band or artist  -not- want a song or album to be catchy?  ;D they arent making music just for themseves to listen to ;)

imo the thing is, the "catchyness" or "poppiness" of it all actually works to DEs benefit. it's just how you look at it or define those terms....

they really switched it up on this record without losing any of their flavor.....it's like they went back to square one, except it's a new square.

to me, some of their signatures sounded slightly forced/stale on SNW,  and from what i heard of EROS(melanie), they might have been trodding further down that road.....personally i'd love nothing more than to hear some more raw and oldschool Deftones style on a new record, but at some points recently it felt like they were spinning wheels.

with DE i feel like they regained some much needed traction,  moving forward and dropping all the dead weight, riff types/rythmic patterns/melodies they outgrew, but held on to either out of habit, sentimentality, or feeling pressured to do so for fear of alienating fans....

it's like they said fuck it, and just did what they enjoyed without worrying about reactions. the more commercial sound of the record at some points would argue against that, but i think that it's just a mature record from a more mature Deftones. i don't think they said "let's just write like incubus and make money" or some shit...i can't imagine them doing anything like that, and if they did i don't think it would sound like DE. just for example, personally i think 976-evil and this place is death are groundbreaking and new pinnacles of their career....

i never lost faith in them, but i never wanted to feel in any way that i was grasping at straws for things to like in some of their post WP songs/work, and i must say that i am COMPLETELY reinvigorated and excited about thm again in a way i haven't been for years. I love the tones more than any other band out there by faaaarrr, and i am so happy to hear them do what they do best, break new ground. even from a "radio" or commercial standpoint, if you wanna look at it through the prism of catchiness, this record blows everything else out there away with it's grace and originality!!!!!

Uhhm, yes. Ever listened to any avant-garde, math-metal, noisy stuff?

Music doesn't have to be catchy to sound great.

yes, yes, yes, and even more. agree.         my statement somewhat sarcastic. like some other posts. doesnt translate well over the net.  whats catchy to someone who has no idea about those genres you listed and is all over the latest pop single might not find those other other genres/bands of music 'catchy'. pelican, naked city, etc. might not appeal to some 13 yr kid who is all over justin bieber. or those bands/types of music arent ever going to be on the radio because they dont follow a ababa song structure. of course that doesnt mean those bands or genres aren't 'good'    they just dont have the potential too be 'catchy' and consumed by millions.     get it?  look what metallica did.   long somewhatcomplex songs on justice and then next album, black, shorter simpler songs and viola instant sucess.   'catchier' more easy to bedigested songs by the masses. yet many said that album sucked and werent good. some people want 'complex'

anyway im wondering if the tones wanted to make an album that would sell more.....in order to use the ca$h to help chi.....

I still really dig it, I still want to listen to it every day. But yeah, it's the most easy listening album they've made for sure and sometimes it can get annoying really fast (especially sextape and risk, imo), but it's an awesome album nonetheless. Actually that's the reason why I dig it so much, because it is not THAT deep and heavy - it really has this positive vibe that everyone's talking about, yepp yepp.
Royal, CMND/CTRL, YSTB, Beauty School, 976-Evil and TPID - love 'em, man.

Rarely listen to it. Almost none of the songs hold any 'secrets' for me or move me in any way. Royal's still a killer track though.

Hesperian Death-Horse!

I absolutely love this album and have from the start. It hasn't lost me at all. It feels similar to the way S/T took me in and remained an absolute favorite even to this day. I'm sure this one will stay with me for the rest of my life. I don't feel like its any more catchy than Deftones have been in the past.
