I listened to it again last night, and cant say I find it too poppy or too catchy at all.  Royal, CMNC/CTRL, YTSB, Rocket Skates, are all pretty aggressive songs.  Diamond Eyes and Sextape are more radio friendly but no more than Minerva or Change.  DE is equally as good as WP IMO.

raise your hand if you think this album is "too" catchy. and by that i mean literally "too" catchy, as in it will not stand the test of time

STD's are too catchy.  And they stand the test of time.

IN WAVES

I've been listening nonstop. It's a great album. On the first listen, I didn't play the songs in order, and I thought it sounded really raw. Maybe it was just because it's a rough version. I actually didn't even play "You've Seen The Butcher" past the slow guitar chugs at first. I thought it sounded too... different.lol Same with Roayl. Once I got the songs in order and played it, I thought it was amazing. The only songs I'm not big on are "Prince" and  "This Place Is Death" . I love the lyrics to Prince, but the song itself isn't one of my favorites. It's growing on me though.

SX King

Its a great album. I dont think they really strayed away from the deftones sound but i think the showed growth. Look at how much they grew from atf to wp. Theyre always experimental and bring new things 2 the table. They could sound like the shitty bands the get radio play everyday. So im going with no on the 2 catchy thing lol

Subliminal

My love for it is getting stronger. Catchy my ass. There's about 3 songs I could play to someone who isn't a fan to get them interested. Diamond Eyes, Beauty School and Sextape.

samson simpson

its just as catchy as White Pony and that was a pretty good album by them

for sure, better than s/t and snw

Moz

I don't think the topic starter is worried about it being too poppy, but perhaps more one dimensional compared to, say WP, ST and SNW, so that after some listens you know the songs from front to back instead of experiencing new facets of the music after years of listening.

ATF was basically this one dimensional as well and I didn't mind. Like ATF, DE is a record I put on the get pumped for a night going out, and for that it does wonders. While the sound is different from ATF, this basically makes DE feel like ATF 2 for me.

Now, here's hoping the NEXT record is WP 2 =P

Sushi-X

Can't we just treat this as something new, why do we need to be fixated on getting Wp2. They'll never make a Wp2 cuz WP is such a complete and unique record.

Im not talking about the same sound dude. Read my post more carefully. Im talking about where I use the record for, the way the songs are structured and how many dimensions the songs have.

Sushi-X

Ok i re read that and i see what you mean. My point is why like try to tag the next album as a WP2. Why can't it be something new and fresh like have it stand on its own?

Note: not trying to diss you or sound attackful. Just having a friendly discussion :)

yeah its ok, I dont want a true white pony either. I shouldn't name it WP2, it was laziness on my part.

so, to get back into the discussion at hand, I do think DE is intensly catchy, but Im not getting sick of it at all. so it's win/win for me

Hey guys.  I'm a total deftones noob here so i'll give my take.  The only deftones song I had heard before 2 weeks ago was Change.  I've had it on my ipod for a few years now and always loved it but had never heard anything else by them.  I don't like much new music and don't listen to the radio so that was it.  I noticed a new song from them (Rocket Skates) on the main page of itunes and decided to check it out and loved it.  Now for the past 2 weeks I have just really fell in love with this band.  I have listened to NOTHING but deftones since then.  I've watched a ton of live footage, interviews and most of their music, learned about their history, and I cna't get enough.  The newer stuff is definitely more catchy you could say, but I think it's incredible.  You can really tell how they have grown since their first album and I love the direction they are going in.  Sorry for blathering on but i'm so glad that i've finally discovered this band.

Good for you... Enjoy !
