anyone else here think there's a lot of similarities in the sound of the record. now i'm not calling the record bad by comparing it to S/T haha i'm just saying chino's vocals sound like same kinda stuff he did on S/T.. some of the song structures, etc... besides S/T is when deftones first busted out the 7 string and really got that heavy sound... i always wanna say this record is like ATF and WP... i think it's more of WP and S/T...

anyone agree?

i played de for a friend. he skipped through the tracks and said chino melodies all sounded the same song to song and from old records. i can hear what he is saying. even 1 of the reviews posted said the same thing. i think he does stretch what he is doing sometimes on de. sometimes his singing and melodies do sound a lot alike song to song. album to album. maybe that's a good thing. buy a can of coke and you know what you are getting. no surprises. same with chino.

Interesting thoughts... I think the overall vibe of S/T was very dark. I remember Abe calling it the "divorce record". I enjoyed it more than most seem to on the board. Diamond Eyes seems more positive and reflective at the same time. The songs are shorter and more "punchy". Both records are pretty and sexual (shit what Deftones record isn't).

I do agree with you about the sound, especially Steph. Frank has more of his mark on Diamond Eyes than any other album and to me that is the biggest difference.

I gotta go back and listen to S/T again this week, just hard to put Diamond Eyes down dude!
One last Thing...You Should Beware the Content!!

Thank God that you........ love..... at all.

I want to agree, I would say some songs are snw/st and others are wp/st. It is so hard to classify as every album is so unique. I just know that I am super impressed by this effort. I would be willing to bet that Eros is probably going to be the most similar to s/t. I would classify this album as the most "user friendly" effort the band has put forth. S/t may very well be my favorite bit it takes a whe to "get it" so to speak.

and i'm not puttin the album down by comparing it. i'm just comparing it musically..

No, I'm not hearing it.  I wouldn't compare the two sonically at all.

There Will Be Blood

It has that 7 sound string s/t has but its more WP and ATF feel to it, It's a great record!

sing blue silver

i don't see the ATF thing at all. it's closest to WP meets SNW.

yeah I guess you're right

It's like S/T got WP pregnant and had a baby called Diamond Eyes Junior or something. A new original baby but has characteristics of his/her parents.

Penicks

absolutely, without a shadow of a fucking doubt, NOT. Not a SINGLE comparance.

The only S/t vibe i get from DE is from 'This Place Is Death'. Not just cause of the title. But it has some of the dynamics that were present on s/t.

Penicks

I can vouch for that. Especially the "you keep me aroused" and the "this place is death" part. It's kind of a breathy voice. I like breathy voices.

Do you ? I remember when I uploaded the 1996 Bristow proshot show, you told me you didn't like Chino's breathy tone.

And to answer the question, I don't think so. Chino has got a sneakier tone on Diamond Eyes, but there's not the arrogance and the vicious tone you could find on the S/T lines. The only song that makes me think about S/T is Prince. I actually think that Prince would fit S/T setlist without any problem. But that's the only song, really.

Penicks

Well that was too breathy. Too forced. Or whatever. :)

yupp, I kinda got the same vibe from it.  Franks work also reminds me a little bit of S/T at times..... But this album doesn't really fully resemble any of their previous albums IMO.

something about chinos 'breathy' singing and some of his other ways of singing remind me of ian brown.
