I've seen you guys sometimes say that you hope they'll release Eros and donate the money to Chi's family. Do you think their record label would allow that? I mean, when Chino released Smile, they took it down very quickly, didn't they? It seems like they wouldn't allow them to do that. But I guess they could release it when they're not with a record label or when they're done making music, and they could do it that way.

Each band member would make money off the album if officially released. They could donate that to Chi's family and it's certainly possible, but the record label's cut would be up to the label. I wouldn't hold my breath on that though.

CHI is still attached to that album on contractual and legal terms so would the royalties and some proceeds from the sales not go to him?

From what you've heard how do you think this album sounds/will sound? To me, and I've only heard the rehearsal clip, it sounds like S/T with more variety and inspired songwriting and SNW with atmosphere. It would likely be heavier than their newer stuff but maybe not as heavy as the really early stuff. So pretty balanced maybe?

I hadn't heard Melanie and I forgot Smile was an Eros song. I discovered the band in 2009 so Eros stuff predates me.

Nothing is official but that's what we're working with. It's very likely that none of the eros tracks will be on the new album.

Yeah, they were Eros songs.  I assumed he was talking about Eros, not Gore... since this is the Eros thread.

And yes, with 0 inside information I can just about guarantee that none of the Eros songs will be on the new album.

Does anyone know if the lyrics and vocals to Smile were done after Chi's death?  Those lyrics would be eerie if they were written when they worked on Eros.

Nobody knows for sure but from what I've read / heard in interviews they shelved the album after Chi's accident and didn't work on it any further.

also regarding eros, didn't chino say they may consider releasing it after gore(at the time it was just the "next album" after KNY) gets released?

Reichward

He did, and I hope it is still what they have in mind.

bewareofrats

Well those lyrics are odd then since they seem like they're about Chi.

Chino was halfway through recording vocals for Eros when Chi had the accident. Personally, I think the vocals for Smile were recorded after Chi passed.

Does anyone know if anyone in the band has ever commented on Smile during an interview or anything? Like why they released it, why it was removed by the record company, if it is representative of the sound of the record in general, etc?
Throw your faith in me. I'll take you some place brand new....

From the interview:

"Let's talk about the "Eros" album. You said few years ago that probably it will not see the light of day but we've heard recently the song "Smile" from it. Is there any change of plans for this album maybe as a tribute to Cheng's memory?

No, there isn't any change of plans. I just shared one song ("Smile") a month ago when it was the first anniversary of Chi's death. This album wasn't finished and if we want to release it one day, we have to work on it further. I don't think that we are really looking forward to go back to this point of our career and dedicate time to finish this album. Probably it won't be ever released."

If anyone can ask the band, I would like to know if those are the vocals Chino did or if there are new.
Also (maybe it's obvious), if did Chi play on the song or if it's even Segio...

Yes yes, Deftones, yes yes, heavy metal, yes yes, nü metal, yes yes, fucking queer, yes yes...

why it was removed by the record company

because warner owns the music, not deftones.
