I am super excited about how this album is being marketed. Don't get me wrong I hate the big studio money grubbing ethos but I have to say they really seem to be behind the band on this one. So far we have a video, 2 songs, a slow cover reveal and lots of internet integration.

For deftones to get this treatment shows a real willingness to get behind the band. Honestly a strange decision considering the band's decidedly non radio vibe and the fact that their previous 2 albums were not highly appreciated by critics and even some fans (not us!).

I may be reading things into it but I don't see a label doing this unless they feel they have a great product to put out and hype. Many much larger and more mainstream artists don't recieve this type of hype and marketing. All this shit costs money, sometimes a lot. Record companies don't put the dollars out there for bands who are not going to sell or have an inferior product to offer.

I know a lot of you guys just want the album and couldn't give a shit about this stuff but I think we are going to get something beyond even our lofty expectations and I, for one am psyched! Besides we need to enjoy the moment cause once this shit drops and we debate it for a while it's back to waiting years for Christmas to come again!

Enjoy this moment fellas, revel in it and above all else, rock this shit with big fat fucking smile on your faces!

Sorry if you don't consider a discussion of how the band and their new material is marketed and distributed relevent enough to merit a topic on a message board ABOUT THE THE BAND...

Damn...  ::)

Well the lable didnt have to pay for studio time for 10 years...So thats where the money came from.  But i think its cool they are getting behind the band. lets just hope they dont get to involved.

Martin

Agreed! The promotion for this record so far displays a proper backing. Very cool to see.

Saturday Night Wrist had seriously poor promotion! So it's good to see there's a clearly bigger effort on this. It already sounds excellent anyway..

theshadeisatool

Ditto that, perhaps WB are only just realising what a brilliant, seminal, world class band they've had on their books all this time....

If ignorance is bliss, then knock the smile off my face.

Far away

It took them a while to do this promo stuff right.
glad they are doing it now.

what is all this marketing everyone is talking about? a new website? some shit on youtube? i guarantee you'll see absolutely nothing on TV, most radio stations or posters, flyers and other such physical marketing. they're putting the same amount of little to no effort they've put into SNW. just because we get a little more stuff online isn't really anything special. you HAVE to do that now-a-days and if you think WMG is really getting behind the band you're just plain retarded. it's only aimed at us, the already existing fans. everyone i know who isn't already a deftones fan has heard virturally nothing about this album. once you meet someone who's not a deftones fan who mentions hype over their new album then you can say they're doing a good job at marketing it. a couple songs and some online content which is about half of what other bands would get is not special. i wish they would promote it but they just plain won't. the new coheed and cambria has had 10 times the promotion already. when you see a commercial on TV for it let me know because then the company is doing their job but i can almost guarantee they won't even make one. the label has proved to me time and time again they don't care about deftones and don't expect them to see the amount of records they would need to to even make an impact at the label anymore. seriously i just do not get what you guys think has been so great about the promotion.

i think they are doing alright with the internet promotion.
better than the last 2 album i think. And we are still 2 months away from the release.

I hated the white pony promotion with the 4 different albums and the label almost forcing the deftones to rerelease the album with BTS lol.

If they didn't care, they would have gotten rid of Deftones.

Yeah, it's not epic support for it but I don't think anyone said it was unbelievable support this time, just more.

Could be wrong though.

skinnypuppy

They're in contract and it would be silly for them to drop Deftones. They don't have to try very hard to have them sell 40k, it's just they aren't trying very hard to push them to sell 60k.

Well, I think they will have a commercial. Even SNW had a commercial and I thoguht that was their least marketed album. Anyone on the street team knows how many flyers and stickers are bound to be on their way. I recieved a new batch of deftones stickers in November promoting a "New Album in 2010" So I'm sure we will have new stuff soon.

being in online marketing, i noticed from the onset there was a lot more marketing going into this album.  i have nothing bad to say about any of it.  it's about time.  i think they had to tell donk to fuck off this time.

i think they finally just have an online presence that ISN'T just geared towards deftones fans, actually.  there is a clear strategy that started with a website that incorporates twitter, facebook, youtube, etc and wasn't flash.  just those things help tremendously.  ncut.

I agree totally. Being a marketing/communications guy I see a clear cut strategy. Throwing out stickers, posters and trinkets is the exact marketing strategy the first post above is talking about. The only people who go apeshit over trinkets ARE true fans. Do you really think average 15-35 year old dude gives a fuck about a deftones pick or drumstick?

The maketing of this album is CLEARLY designed to; A. Build hype on the net. B. Hurt piracy (I know, virtually impossible). C. Excite the existing fan base.

In the current marketing and distribution climate it is THE best strategy a label OR band can have.

As for commercials... Really??? WTF are you watching? Do people even WATCH commercials anymore??? I honestly can't recall watching a commercial in the last three years unless I fell asleep and woke up to hear " JITTERBUG!" or it was the Super Bowl... Oh, and please, dear god, please, don't tell me you meant a radio commercial...........
