Self-titled thoughts

Ok, like everybody else I love all the albums but I think I have to give the nod to self-titled as the best. It is a very tight race between s/t and white pony. In my book the only even semi-weak songs on s/t are wgtb and moana, and these are 3 out of 5 stars for me. As much as I love white pony passenger really hurts it for me. I realize many might consider that sacrilege but I can not stand tool, sorry...

I have heard many say that s/t lacks cohesiveness but I strongly disagree, there is such an ominous, moody vibe to the whole album and I think the way it "flows" is great. Oddly enough it took a long time to grow on me. Definately an album that requires repeat listenings but don't all Deftones albums?

I rank them like this; 1. S/T.   2. White Pony.   3. ATF.   4. SNW.  5. B-Sides.  6. Adrenaline.

I realize many will disagree but how do you guys rank them. Imagine you could only have two, what would they be?

it's all opinion... deftones have changed since adrenaline to diamond eyes... ranking the records now is just a matter of opinion... they have totally switched genres, from nu metal rock/rap shit to progressive metal...

but s/t is good material... listening to it now, though, i can tell there wasn't too much effort into it by the band.. you can almost hear it, listening to it now knowing their perspective and the fact that the band wasn't too tight around that time...

i think it's their worst album. it seems sorta uninspired, and unfinished. lazy for them, lack of riffs. Chino seemed to have writers block. however, they're such a good band that their worst effort is still really good. but i'd take any of their other albums over s/t

I think s/t is one of their best. i think it gets a lot of shit cuz it wasn't WP2. WGTB took awhile to grow on me but i don't skip it now like i used to.

S/T took me the longest to really love it out of all of their albums.  At first I wasn't so into it, but then I really fell in love with it.  Its a really dark record, but beautiful at the same time.  Hexagram is my favorite live song to this day.  But I honestly can't rank their albums, their all unique in their own way.  Wish they would play battle axe live more often!

I think WGTB is one of the best songs the band has written, albeit unbearingly brutal.  Minerva is simply gorgeous.  Hexagram is decades ahead of its time still.  Same goes for Needles and Pins - such interesting song structure.  Bloody Cape's a classic too.  The rest are kinda meh, but still fine cuts.  I think the album is cohesive at the end of the day, unlike SNW which has a few good songs (Combat, Beware, Kimdrakula) but ends up just being a lagging mass of human aspiration.

Hesperian Death-Horse!

Possibly my top favorite Deftones album. The only weak track to me is "Moana." I love the lyrical consistency and major lyrical themes that run throughout the album. Its simply beautiful. To me, its like Deftones version of Post-Rock like Mogwai. Its like how they would do that sound. The longer drawn out guitar phrases and full chord strumming in a very non-traditional presentation. Its just great to me. I remember hearing the clips of like 5 of the songs before the release with their working titles. WGTB was called Bukkake and I thought it was the most brutal and awesome clip I'd ever heard. Those were good times.

I don't even know how to rank the albums.

Hate to jump on that bandwagon but White Pony is the best album by deftones.  It's flawless.

I disagree somewhat, although I can see your point. For me the sense of foreboding and tension on this album is like a bomb about to go off. I think the fact that th band wasn't tight at the time was a big part of why the album has this type of feeling.

I love the work by Frank on this record too. He really shines here. I pray that we hear him well on the new album! He did some fine stuff on snw too. His role actually becomes bigger and better with each record IMO.

if I could only have two Deftones albums, that would definitely be self-titled and White Pony. No questions asked.

HEXAGRAM IS THE SHIT. i got the S/T epk DVD a when it dropped from a friend of my dads that worked for WEA at the time, and my mind was blown, i wish the ENTIRE album was up to those standards.
i wholeheartedly agree with everything you said about self-titled, except i love Good Morning Beautiful as well.

BTW IMO there's more to SNW than that, but it's all subjective.
