You would actually be suprised to know what a record company gets and what they have to pay out like staff, rent, bills and money from the sales have to be recouped for marketing costs (approx 22% of the advance has to be recouped for marketing costs) The distributer has to take a cut and to be honest most of the money goes to the retailer for album sales, then theres the various royalty payments.

I spoke to Warner a couple of weeks ago and I was told that everything is now on hold and not to expect anything this year.

Dispite all this, at least Deftones are touring and will showcase some of the new material.

Band's rarely ever get any money from album sales.

blah... how do they get $$ otherwise? major royalties come by way of selling albums rather than live performances

You are badly mistaken... Just check aenemic's answer please....    ;)

He fucked up SNW ? You guys must be kidding. Albums with Terry Date were all better than SNW to me, but SNW is a badass album, Deftones explored some new musical areas they didn't before and it actually blew my mind up.

Chino's voice was pretty terrible though. That was mostly what Lopez worked on. See Rapture, Beware, Cherry Waves, and then compare it to any song off of S/T. His vocal parts are awful.
not really, i think he sounds better on snw

Inkblades

Slopez absolutely fucked up SNW. Imagine how much better that album would be if they had stuck with Ezrin, or if Date had produced it.

Vesanic

They weren't terrible, come on... Riviere was sweet, Rats! Rats! Rats! was really good to me, although it was a big change from his usual deep screamings. KimDracula and Hole in The Earth were good, too. As for Cherry Waves, I think his vocal parts are excellent.

Of course his vocals on SNW were different from any other deftones album, but it's not due to Lopez's fault, it's all on Chino's bad throat, seriously. Just see the 2006's and 2007's concerts, it's not a coincidence, you know.

This whole situation is terrible for the band and fans alike.

I'm totally lost as to what was completed on the record and not sure at the minute where they are at with it. To be fair, if a friend in my band was in the same situation I don't think i'd want to release anything out of respect. Also, the writing around that time is specific to that music so if it suddenly comes to a halt then the mood changes etc - becoming a totally different thing.

Of course we'll get angry/sad/impatient etc but it's not for us to judge or decide.

Life comes first above all else. On the other hand...... I CAN'T WAIT FOR NEW MATERIAL!!!!

defskull

So if a friend of yours was in that condition, you would not want to release something he worked hard on and wanted the public to hear out of respect for him?  How does that make sense?

They haven't done that much for Chi, now they're shelving what he did record with them..so he won't get any royalties from that "new" album? Like Chi or his family don't need that type of cash...

I really hope that's total bullshit!  >:(

Band's rarely ever get any money from album sales.
well, they get like 1$ for each album sold, split between 5 guys

yea its not like a dollar per album. everything has to be paid for and most of the time (unless ur a chart topper) the bands end up owing the record company money, which is paid for by touring. then the touring makes lots of money eventually
Dingus.

defskull

To be fair though any money made for Chi is better than no money made for Chi.

well i've heard it's usually $1 per album, so i'm sticking to that in my mind until proven wrong

.
riviere is awesome

rivieve, kimdracula, combat, cherry waves, xerces, rapture. all great tunes. uuddlrlr is a really nice instrumental, & i'm glad they added it to the album. rats, hite, really the whole album is good. i dont have the foggiest idea why so many people here dont like that album

ChickenNoodle

IMHO, nobody will truly know who contributed which bass lines until they decide to release the record and its written in the liner notes. Until then, nobody will really know which song were written by chi, sergio or both.  Its as simple as that.

SNW has no replay quality. it gets boring with time

im just not a fan of that album.

i still think deftones have potential. i just wish chi would get better. and then the band hopefully uses the potential

It's just what I'd do.... not that any decision is right, mind....

Difficult situation to be fair.

An odd time in the Deftones' chapter I guess.

I ditto that. But the intro to "in studio" clips was fucking awesome. As was Steph's playing in "In Studio Clip 3"
