Enlighten me, not really a musician myself and I know that "mics" are essential to the recording process but is it really a Nick R. thing to have so many going on around Abe as it was sorta new to me during DE process when I heard Abe say "lotsa mics". ??? It looks ridiculous and keep in mind this is a genuine, kinda naive question in a way. I have no idea how a kit should be miked if there is even a standard but it seems ridiculous just judging by the photo. Abes drums didn't really "pop out" at me on DE contrary to what I expected after reading and hearing about it. Not saying he didn't sound clear, crisp and on point as usual (outstanding)........ Terry didn't do it like this, did he? or could it be with the times as far as this being the new norm for this process when bands record? Fuck the funny shit, this is something I would appreciate some good, positive input on. Thanx in advance.... ??? ??? :)

It's essential to have overheads when recording a drum kit to fill out the sound. Doesn't matter where you place the floor mic for the kick or the fixed mic for the snare and toms, at the end of the day, what you do with the over head audio track will change the sound drastically. it's weird to see so many in one spot like that though. I doubt they're actually recording with the mics set up like that, for a start, one of those condenser mics alone would be enough to pick up the full resonance from the left side of his kit. Apart from that cluster above his symbols its normal to have around 10+ mics while recording drums.

Probably, 2 on every tom, 3 on the snare, 3 on on the kick, a couple of overhead 4, 3 roommics :). This setup was pure for the picture.

that would give a total of 8 + 3 + 3 + 4 + 3 = 21mics.. if they use a 'a lot of mics', as was said on DE

And they don't have to necessarily use all of those mics in the final mix. I assume you're talking about the overheads. You typically use overheads in the XY pattern with 2 mics almost facing eachother like above. Perhaps they just added another pair in a little altered XY position (further apart) which can cause a completely different sound. When it comes time to mix, they can drop either pair or any one mic all together, and therefor they wouldn't have to retrack any of the songs because they want to end up using a different setup. And that's just what I think is happening there...
