Definitely one of the best SNW demos. Are they ever going to do anything with it?

Bergerac

Yup, this was the opener on my pseudo-SNW.

Demo 5
Demo 9
Beware (Live sound)
Demo Cherry Waves
Demo 12
Demo 13
Demo 7
Buffalo (Live structure/sound)
Demo 15

That's my SNW.

jesusinabowlofdirt

before the release of snw everyone got 3 live versions, buffalo/finger of death, beware the water, and fm/rapture.... although buffalo is in its league of its own, all 3 tracks sounded good.

but what do they do? they got rid of that haunting sad noice in the chorus in beware the water,fm/rapture which sounded heavy and in yr face live, got transformated into light crappy version with bad vocals and irritating effects from frank.

and worst of all, they rejected buffalo, didnt even make the final cut on the album. worst decision ever. and all of the demos above... they clearly got more potential then all the crap on snw.

who are to blame here, deftones, chino, bob ezrin or is it shawn lopez? i want a scapegoat damnit although its been nearly 3 years since

I'd throw the Xerces demo on there. So much better than the final version. Those synths.  :o :o :o

Chino and Slow-pez. I don't blame Chino as much because the man has given us alot of great material, plus I think he was just going through a hard time at that period (divorce, drugs, etc.). He gets a pass. Slow-pez, on the other hand, doesn't. He told them to edit down Riviere and Kimdracula. Why? Two of the better songs on SNW, and he wants them shorter? Who the fuck is he?

jesusinabowlofdirt

i dunno a douche maybe. its kind of funny, its kind of sad- it started out with buffalo... long epic grand song... u hear of ezrin is going to produce the album, the man who did a lot of work with pink floyd.... of course u thought that now the songs will be in similar ways... they as band go to his studio and start working.

get your hopes up? no shit..

but in the end... its just chino and lopez in lopez his studio.... chino fucked up on speed and shaun says "here... let me take care of things".  such a sad ending. talk about anticlimax

13hourstoparadise

Beware was kind of a leak from what I understand... The production of the inital track was awful...

Bergerac

Beware sounded so much better live on 18.02.2006. It was the first SNW material I heard - the mp3 on DeftonesWorld, and the dynamics sound way different. Abe's pounding the drums, the guitar and feedback is heavy as fuck, and Chino's verse guitar line isn't barely audible, so it isn't clogging up the simple tune. Oh, and the synth sounds more like a piano: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TziusqXQ9Fo&feature=channel_page

Abe's drums and the wailing chords and feedback make it sound like a Minerva-style, heavy tune, instead of the plastic, clean recording they released. That first chorus sounds like despair, and there's none of that on the record. I was hoping that this was the blueprint for SNW.

I never liked Rapture, I hate the verse music. As for Buffalo, well if Chino couldn't put lyrics on it, fair enough. I can live with the live version from '04. The SNW demo sounded pap anyway. Too many fucking harmonic picks in the verse by Stef made it monotonous. That and they added that stupid pop-metal bridge in around 3:14 and the Outro just isn't heavy enough. If they'd gone with that production I'd have been really disappointed.

One thing about the Cherry Waves demo is the nice weird intro instrument it has. Instead we got the Freak On A Leash synth on the actual album. But then the band reuse the old intro for this performance at Virgin Megastore FOR SNW's release. WTF? Its like admitting to the old intro being better:

I think Chino really did get fucked up with Lopez and just let him do whatever to the production.

Rapture didnt get transformed into a light crappy version..cant u feel the intensity of the vocals and the riffs? And frank's effects near the end just makes the song a great closing. Some of those demos were great but others didnt have any potential compared to the new songs like kim dracula, rats!rats!rats!, although i agree buffalo should have made the final cut. Demo 5 should be completed and put on the their new album.

Some of the demos are pretty bare-boned and repetitive, probably because they were in very early stages. I agree that the live versions of Beware and Rapture were better than their studio counterparts, but Cherry Waves is a vast improvement over the demo, as is Combat and HITE.

Penicks

Same. Same with Cherry Waves demo.

By the way, buddyboy...by making this video, are you hinting that the demo might pop up on Eros? Please say yes.
