Deftones and Smashing Pumpkins

A kind of a weird question.......but for some reason whenever I play the Deftones for the 1st time for somebody that has never heard them, people tell me that they sound like or remind them of the Smashing Pumpkins.

Anybody ever else been told that?

Well, Deftones and Smashing Pumpkins have both a little of " weirdness " in their own style.

But I don't think their sound is that similar.

Actually yesterday I found this while browsing on wikipedia:

Deftones lead singer Chino Moreno said in an interview that he is a fan of Adore, listening to it extensively while touring, and that "Once Upon a Time" "really moves" him.[92] Critics have found connections with the Pumpkins' sound in various Deftones albums

If you ask me, I kind of find the SP's sound on '03's S/T, If you get what I mean.

i think its obvious that deftones draw a significant amount of their material from the pumpkins sound, as they have done with much older bands like The Cure, and maybe you can here the more modern sound of bands like the Pumpkins more prominently in their music. All that aside, theyre alot of newer bands that sound like the pumpkins....
Going back to your observation, i can see this as a common perception amongst many

Daphne Descend's on Adore and Digital Bath's verse/pre chorus riffs are pretty much identical, lol. Besides that I don't think there are any blatant rip-offs. But yeah, I can see where your friends are coming from-ish.

I've never heard it either but I've read reviews mentioning Smashing Pumpkins and Billy Corgan, so maybe it's there. maybe I just refuse to hear it since I dislike Corgan very much.
