I think, because of his "red eyes" caused by weed jaja....

From what I understand, Stephen was and still is very much anti-hype/press.  The black bars over his eyes express this, as does his blurred face in the enhanced S/T content.   You can find in many interviews (including his new ultimes-guitar interview) that Stephen hates the hype machine that is the music industry.  I also find it interesting that he's mentioned that when the label takes promo photos he wants to smile but they won't let him.  The band has a certain image to maintain...

yeah i think so too, but that is another discussion. it doesnt change the reason why stephen has a black stripe on his eyes. regardless of what kind of records i listen too, white pony is soft by deftones standards and stephen is very metal

That's how it should be definied because, yes! that record is mellow and BEAUITFUL for it. but stephens tone is still chrushing. It's unbelievably layered. Fuckin terry knows what he's doin.
