Whats the story behind the bassriff to Change?
Quote from: 13hourstoparadise on Nov 08, 2008, 07:10 PM
No I haven't, enlighten me! Yes, it is a sweet riff!! That is all Chi right there, oh and Cherry Waves, Deathblow, how he wrote this notes is beyound me...

Alright, he wrote that line. I don't recall for 100% but I know the riff wasn't appreciated all that much, people were like "what's that?". This is why the bass is hard to hear in that song, which is such a shame. Because it's so grooving...

A lot of his newer playing (HITE, Cherry Waves, Beware etc etc.) is in a similar style. If Chi would have listened to the "complaints" and came up with a different riff we wouldn't have all those sick grooves...

Funny little anecdote...

chi update 11/8/08

Hey everyone, As of today chi is holding strong. He we be so happy to know the good things you are doing out of respect for him in his downtime. For day three, Please, if your gonna party find a designated driver beforehand and of coarse stay buckled. Chi's mother (Jeanne) asked if I would post these words from her as well. -Chino.

"When asking Chi's head neuro surgeon what kind of thank you gift we could get for he and his team of doctors he responded that some of the surgeons love the Deftones and he would like them to have tickets for when chi's back onstage. He expects a tough recovery but in the end expects Chi will be playing his bass again. Praise Jah. For himself the doc has a special request for all of you. He will give you more details soon. It is 1:00 am now and I am with Chi. I've been reading your emails to him. You are so wonderful. My heart aches with love for you. We are all connected." - Jeanne (chis mom).

Oh sorry, I forgot to say thanks.

Change live sounds a lot better, most of the time you can hear Chi's progression in the song.

Dear Chi,

I, like many others, was devastated to hear about your accident and resulting comatose state.  I have been listening to your music for 11 years and have been fortunate to see you guys at least 10 times. In fact, you guys popped my concert cherry on November 10th, 1998,  a decade ago.  I have loved all the work you have done with the band, from the opening of One Weak to the awesome bass line in Cherry Waves.

I have not had(or perhaps taken) the opportunity to personally meet you, but I have heard from many of my fellow friends here on Sharing Lungs that you are a very cool and down to earth guy.  I admire your achievements that you have earned and how you have used your status to promote some good in this world, through community outreach and with organizations like PETA.  I hope to meet you one day and shake your hand, and maybe talk over some beers and cigarettes.

You truly are an awesome person and will pull through this. This world is not done with you yet. Stay strong.

Peace and love,
Michael Rodriguez from Houston TX

Chi,.

Look for inspiration in people like Rick Allen (Def Leppard drummer) also involved in a serious car accident and has managed to carry on despite his mind blowing disability. No matter what the outcome of this you will have god with you in whatever route your life will take. No matter what happens im sure you wont be forgotten as an artist, a poet, a human, a father, a brother etc..... I think you get the message so basically we are with you mate stay true and god will be with you. x

Haha no need to thank me. It just looked like you missed it or something, i thought it was pretty funny that the other members didn't like it at first, because that riff is pure genius :P

Yeah and i agree, if the bass would just be a tad louder..but it does have a special vibe on the album

That's amazing, we're getting more hopes. He'll do it, I know.

Dear Chi,

one of my close friends got into a car accident about a year ago.. Heavy brain damage, what a person he was, and now - after a year everybody knows, that he will not be the same person ever again. I sincerely wish this does not happen to you, in any way. There are just too many people dying in carcrashes, too many lives taken by the machines. And even though I would never know you personally, and the closest distance between you and me were just few metres, I still, with all my heart, wish you a full recovery - to be reborn as an artist and spread your love to every person in this world. People need you.

with his deepest love,
Darius Gerulis from Lithuania.

Hey bro,
I couldn't avoid feeling shocked when I read about your accident, and still can't believe it. Life can sometimes meddle with the wrong people, and all of this is a good example. Wish you the best recovery possible, can't wait to see you on stage again communicating the infinite amont of energy and good vibes you've gotten us accustomed to. Until then, see you soon.

Dear bro Chi

There aren't enough words to express how you and the rest of the band have inspired me on the last 8 years. It was so shocking to knew about your situation, but at that moment I just remembered the time I had the chance to shake your hand the last time you came to Mexico and I knew everything will end up good. I hope to see you soon making what you do best, making us forget our problems with your music. Stay strong bro. Good vibes.

A big hug from a big mexican fan.

Jonás.

Of course not! I am just saying Chi is my favorite member because he wrote that line.
