i was just sitting next to him talking to him and ya.. he looks right into my eyes. when i show him things to look at he scans it with his eyes totally checking it out.

This is great news! Traumatic brain injuries are always unpredictable and progress is always hard to gauge, but in Chi's case it looks like a dramatic improvement! All we can do is keep sending good vibes his way. He will always be the Deftones' brother regardless of their bass player situation so the most important thing is that his brain is functioning at a conscious level now.

no i don't see him rocking on stage again, but that doesn't mean he's not going to be here...

he has more on his mind than a fucking band, he has a wife (or ex wife or whatever) and kids... just pray that he gets out of this shit well, physically and financially... would i want to see him jam with his band? fuck yeah, who wouldn't? but that's a little selfish... just be glad that he made it as far as he has after the tragedy and hope that he continues to recover as well as he has... cheng's a strong dude... we all know he will make it out of this well, but to bitch 'cause he might not play bass again with deftones is fucked up... if music or the arts is cheng's shit then i'm sure he'll find something that he can do in this field.. but jumping around headbaning - i don't think so...
