This seems to happen a lot to bands that were good then cross over to the mainstream - as two people have already said Lostprophets is a good example. They just become pedestrian/mediocre after that. My own example, but less mainstream - Weezer. Everything after the Green Album/Maladroit is shat.

weezer has always been mainstream.  i was 13-14 when the blue album came out and i remember buddy holly getting MAJOR radio and mtv airplay.

i think in the cases of bands like deftones and weezer, they dont fall off.  they just set a bar so high for themselves early in their careers that it is impossible to reach again.  weezer's blue album and pinkerton and deftones adrenaline, ATF, and white pony are as close to perfection as any band can get.  now all the fans want another pinkerton or ATF and it's never going to fucking happen.

with bands that have reached perfection at some point early in their careers, i find it's best to just appreciate that your beloved bands are still around and even though their new shit isn't half as good as it once was, be greatful that they still show occasional moments of brilliance and continue to TOUR!

songs like the angel and the one, or kimdracula are still better than 99% of the feces thrown at us on a daily basis by the record industry monkeys nowdays.  i guess i'm content with that.

there is truth to found in this post. I never thought weezer or the tones fell off, even though the material wasn't up to peak standards, they still released music they wanted too.

No Doubt-a tragic tragic shame...but supposedly they're reuniting to do it again old school
Korn- I think the nuts carving their name in their chests jinxed them
Smashing Pumpkins-their last album made me sad
And what the fuck happened to Save Ferris? I loved their cover of C'mon Eileen

A Crow Left of the Murder blew and Light Grenades is ok at best and why does Brandon sing like he wants to be in Hoobastank? Fuck that.

Clint Lowery is back in SevenDust-saw them this summer...

Personally I would love to hear Incubus bring back tha funk. But they lost Alex. So that will never happen again.

Boyd still is a great lyricist though. And Mike Enzinger remains one of my favorite guitarists.

I'd disagree. I always had the feeling with TOOL that they've always got something in reserve that's better than anything they've ever done. 10,000 Days is up there with everything else they've done in my eyes.

lithium

there was progression up until lateralus. i guess it's hard to top a masterpiece though..

10000 days wasnt a step forward like the past albums, i think they've become complacent with the state of their music.

Nah, it wasn't a step forward, you're right. I just see it as a different shade. It has a different feeling to Lateralus and that's cool with me. A side step is just as good as a forward one.

lithium

the pot is awesome though

I hope your not saying they started to suck before they released their best album, Lateralus.

I guess you are quite right there. But I think 10,000 days is still a masterpiece.
Tool is just such a good great band, but they didn't realy brought anything new with 10,000 days.

I never said Tool sucked, but Lateralus and 10,000 days, outside of a few songs didn't do much for me.
Not only that but their live shows have been really boring the last 10 years.

The streets have gone dark. They've been dark for days. We board up the house. Hide upstairs and wait!

No irony here, I am a fan of tool, but their last two albums bored me.
Maybe I have seen too many shows, but Maynard hiding in the shadows while Adam stands still like a manequin is hardly an exciting concert.
I know, it's all about the music when you see tool live, but if I wanted to close my eyes and concentrate on the music, I would put there CD in my surround sound and rattle the walls. I could give a shit about the laser show they put on.

+1, i too was bored by laterlus and 10000 days. good albums, to be sure, but a lot of the songs could have been cut down a couple minutes. it seemed like overindulgence on the part of adam a lot of the time.

Tool's albums consist of 10% good songs and 90% filler noise.

I can understand that. Personally, I love TOOL live. The whole show is great.

lostpilot

I don't get you guys.
Lateralus is one of my favourite albums, ever.
And, yes, 10000 Days is weaker, but Lateralus is, in my opinion, their best.

lithium

lateralus is pure perfection
