*start rant*

I get really sick and tired of hearing everyone classify music they don't like as EMO.   Emo is pretty much short for emotional.. and last I fucking looked.. most music is fucking emotional.       I have scoured the internet on this issue... as it really strikes a nerve with me.   Mostly because half of this board talks about "emo" music as if it's the plague.  Well, here we go.   I have found ON MANY pages... (go ahead and google yourself) many people calling Deftones "emo".

And let me go on with this list...

My Bloody Valentine
The Smiths
The Cure
Underoath
Bullet For My Valentine
From First to Last
Silverstein
Hawthorne Heights
The Used
Senses Fail
Thrice    ------- Saw with Deftones
Thursday  ------  Saw with Deftones
Every Time I Die
Three Days Grace
Atreyu
HIM
Coldplay
Brand New
Saves The Day
Dashboard Confessional

this is not the end of the list.. but all I care to keep typing....

Oh and were we all aware that Weezer apparently kicked off the Emo start?
http://www.mtv.com/bands/w/weezer/news_feature_102504/
UGH and Deftones had to do a Weezer cover.... *sigh*    =o)

So, if I don't understand the lyrics.. ie... most of the death metal...  does that mean that the lyrics aren't emotional?    Or do you all just look and see if they are wearing tight pants.. or a scarf?

So.... I looked into what exactly makes music "emo"

Emo Music :

-To summarize, emo (short for "emotional") is a rock genre.

-Emo music started in the '80s. The vocals range from "normal singing ... to a kind of pleading howl to gut-wrenching screams.

-Typical lyrics "tend toward abstract poetry" and are usually difficult to decipher..

So if this is the case.   Are Deftones "emo"?   If they are.... do we really care?   I mean, why do they have to be "classified" anyway.  I mean.. You can classify bands as Indie, Punk, Pop, Hardcore, Rock... does "Emo" actually have to be a classification.. being that everyone is just adding whatever music they dislike to that category anyway!    I saw in another thread..  Matchbox 20.. pushed into the Emo category... wowzaz..   I would have NEVER ever thought them to be "emo"     I know I'll catch slack from this post and that's ok.  But I am a woman, and a mom.. and I'm 32.   Sometimes it's nice to listen to music that you can actually relate to, something that has a little feeling behind it....

So I'm asking you guys.... What exactly does "emo" mean to you...   And what exactly do you "like/dislike" about it.    I want to understand all this contorted bullshit.   I mean, seriously.  Dave Matthews Band being called Emo?  lolz.

Just because you don't like a group... does NOT mean they are Emo.   Fact.

you are such an emo  :D

to be serious: i agree with you. "emo" is not a musical genre. all music is emotional, otherwise nobody wouldnt listen to it.

but some bands have a certain attitude that may be classified as "wannabe-evil-rock-mainstream-shit" or something, i dont know  :(

Emo music is like pop-punk music and indie rock mixed together. Or at least they try hard to sound like it.

I disagree that Weezer started the whole emo thing. They sound nothing like the stuff I hear as classified being "emo". So nah Weezer didn't start anything.

White Pwny

Ya can't make up that kind of crazy.  It's all in the MTV link.

Just so yannow.   I do agree with you.  My whole point of the post was...Too many times bands are classified as Emo, that should NOT be.

agreed. i find it hard to believe that every time i die is emo. who knows maybe cannibal corpse will soon be considered emo.

maybe we have to think that that was MTV classifying some of that...

Ahh. Okay, well now that I read, I can see where these "emo" bands get their influence. But what I can't stand about emo music is the voice and the instruments and how they are played.

But they still don't sound like the emo bands of today.

mr.sinister

Besides I rarely tag music as it being emo or punk metal. I usually just say "they are a rock band".

Having a genre of music called emo is pretty ridiculous because it is such a vague form of describing the music. But according to people emo music sounds like pop punk so I guess it can somewhat describe their style of music. All bands are emotional. Deftones, Incubus, Metallica 50 Cent whatever. so why tag something as "emo". To sell something or to go with some trend or to hate the trend. Besides look at this.

I don't know if this has been posted before today but just proves how some people can be elitist assholes.

lol.. I'm really not suprised... as a large majority of people will just find any justification to be a dickface for the sake of being a dickface.     I am a little disheartened to see a race treat others of the same race so disgustingly... over the way they dress.   Stupid fuckers.

On the other hand  I am glad to see people agree with me.  I saw the band bashing thread... and I was quite disappointed at some of the "classifications" of certain bands.

I get this shit all the time... I played Catch Without Arms today at work and someone asked my friend who was playing and he turned round and said 'Some emo band' I think emo is now becoming the word where, if you don't like the music, it's emo... But I don't understand why Korn or Linkin Park aren't classified as emo? I bet if they had long black fringe going over their eyes and ears and wore skinny as fuck jeans, then they'd be classed as emo. How pathetic is that? How pathetic to be classed as an emo for the clothes you wear regardless of what music you listen to. Listen to what you want people, dress how you want and don't let any fuckers tell you otherwise...

emo music was once cool. until it became to be about the clothing and not the music.

good "emo" bands include;

sunny day real estate
american football
christie front drive
mineral

etc.

FUCK the scene shit.

I barely read any of the comments here because the subject is so old and beat up, but yet there seems to be some jackasses who like to start shit and label people (not you, White Pwny, but people who are so pretentious they actually have the nerve to do so otherwise).

"Emo" was a culture that came about far before Weezer evolved. All Weezer did was bring the subject into popular culture because of:
1- The band's physical appearance, especially Rivers'
2- Pinkerton, because apparently there had never been an artist before who had written heart-felt, honest lyrics
3- MTV made the brilliant move to refer to Weezer as an "emo" band

I completely agree that everything in music is emotional, but to confuse the "emo" culture with anything is ridiculous. I just choose to ignore people when they mention emo; I gave up hope when a girl with whom I had class in high school referred to Fall Out Boy as "emo" and "punk rock." To me, that's just a disgrace of the innovative bands who helped progress emo and punk culture. Seriously, when did an entire lifestyle get boiled down to a sorry-ass haircut and something you buy from Hot Topic?

Fuck that shit and listen to your iPod.

Swords

out of all those bands i'm just surprised that Every Time I Die is somehow classified as EMO...

I didn't read through this thread, but I'll just say this: people on here complaining about emo are nuts considering Deftones have started using lots of emo influences in their music.

i don't care about the terminology.  i think most of the "culture" involved with music today sucks. all music.  not just one genre or subgenre.  i like music.  i listen to music i like.  not emo or rap or nu-metal or r&b or dnb or punk rock but just good music.  here's what i have to say to the people who listen to almost entirely one subgenre of music: the bands/artists you like suck.  quit dressing like a fag.

whatever, im gonna watch some porn before i have to go to this study group thing.
