in and out of beat?

ever heard of a click track?

yeah, I'm a drummer myself. my previous post wasn't meant like "what is that?"... it was more of a "where did you get that from?". sure, he throws in some off-beat drumming in a couple of songs (actually I can only think 2) - but it's definitely not something that's typical for his style. on the other hand, Danny plays that shit all the time without you even realizing...

what are those two songs, and what parts? I'm interested in knowing.

he plays off-beat in RX Queen for example - that's the most obvious song. also the main beat in Digital Bath has an off-beat pattern on the hi-hat.

now that I read back on the posts however, it hits me that he might have meant that Abe doesn't necessarily keep the beat while playing... and if that's what he meant, then I don't really know what to say. not keeping the beat doesn't make you a good/unique drummer in any way. it makes you a bad drummer. and Abe does, in fact, not always keep the beat when playing live. it works though, as the entire band doesn't always sound that "tight".

I didn't say that Danny didn't do it either, it's just Abe's style is way more distinctive... well I think a classic example is Lhabia for me... and the whole of the ATF album in areas; it is all over the place, and my engineer friend who I am talking about did work with MH recently, so I don't doubt his knowledge. I aren't saying at all "abe is god, balls to Danny"... it's an impossible verdict anyway on this subject, but Abe's style (espeically with the hint of Stewart Copeland style he puts in, [damn I love his drumming too] ) makes him a really original drummer.

It's damn hard to be original these days, but I think Abe has it down to a tee, regarding Drummers that is.

Hmm.. I've always been impressed how "tight" they do sound when I see them live... well I suppose there were a few shows in the 18 times I've seen them that they might have been off...

well, like most bands they've become better over time. from what I've seen/heard, shows from '98-'03 aren't as tight as more recent shows.

also, i'm not a fan of the band, but dillinger escape plan's drummer is a beast

that should get you started. Don't get me wrong, i likes me some Zach Hill, he certainly has a unique style, but best ever. come on.
