abe would need a bigger kit to compare to danny

That's stupid. It's not the size of the kit, it's how you use it.

Are we still talking about drums?

Just kidding.

I think it should be self-evident that Danny Carey is TECHNICALLY a better player. I'm sure there are things that Danny does that Abe can't do. But I doubt there is anything Abe can do that Danny can't. It really doesn't really matter at this point because though Danny's technical proficiency is more than likely higher than Abe's, Abe is still one fuckin' hell of a drummer with sick fuckin chops. I mean, he kicks all types of ass. At that point its really just a matter of taste. Who's style do you prefer? That's all that matters.

question should have been 'who do you prefer' rather than 'who's better', because danny carey is better (no shit?) i do prefer abe's drumming better though, he can really get you in to a groove...

Comparing drum styles...to be serious it's futile.

I think Danny is more technically minded. If you wanted to hire a drummer to play on your album and you only had a limited time to do it in, Danny would come in and do it for you in a day, no problem. Abe to me is more of a 'musician' where his drumming ability adds to the music, just like a musical instrument should do. Don't get me wrong, Danny is an incredible drummer, but I'd rather listen to someone who 'plays' their instrument rather than someone who can do triplets in record speed time...

Agreed.

ToneDef

You can't fucking compare. Two totally different drummers.

Sure, Danny could play all of Abes shit no problem. But could he have come up with it in the first place?

Fireal1222

where the fuck have you been?

danny's got a typical progressive setup. he is technically better (maybe not, i mean, you can't tell til you've heard abe trying to be technically perfect, although, i don't think he's tried and i don't think he is)

but it's about writing at the end. abe's written better drum parts than danny. but yeah, if i wanted to hire someone for recording, it'd be danny. he's more of a one-take guy.

also, danny's got better ideas about drumming patterns, with the fibonacci thing on lateralus. abe's usually got his 4/4 and he makes that work really well. it's hard making a 4/4 work all the time without being repetitive.

personally, i'd pick abe, he's been my favourite for a long time. there's a savage skill in his drum playing when i hear it, i love that about deftones. and yeah, he's a big guy, a real threat to the skins. also, he's not technically wrong when it comes to drumming. not too technically advanced, but not technically wrong.

cool vid of Danny Carey, love his use of that huge 'gong' cymbal behind him @ 01:54...puts his stick under his arm, grabs another stick, then replaces it...pretty cool

Just as he hit the ground, they lowered a tow that stuck in his neck to the gills.

you are 100% correct about this.

But I will still say danny.  Im really no expert on music or technical drumming or anything like that.  But I know what my ears like and danny has it.
