this is damn weird.

i always considered this album to be my least favorite...but lately i've just been obsessed with it.

it's like i >just< discovered it now.

what an amazing album...track for track. it's so varied and it manages to flow together so fucking well. i really don't know why i haven't been paying more attention to this album before now... amazing. go get you knife...

anyways, this is an awesome feeling.

wither-I

agreed. im looking for the same kind of cohesiveness on the new album... white pony is brilliant.

yeah. white pony is the only album i can listen to every track on.. but its not my favorite album

although i was tripping really hard on mushrooms once and we played white pony. sounded amazing

WTF, why did it took you so long? I mean, it took me a while to let it grow and its been my favourite ever since, but how long do you know this record? It didnt take longer than a month or so for me.

theis

i've had the album for about 5 years. and i've also listened to it quite a bit.

i just never thought that highly of it.

and it's weird. i was really obsessed with SNW when it came out... but i'm having a hard time REALLY enjoying it now. it just doesn't flow as well as WP and S/T. it still has some of the best deftones songs on it, though.

Fireal1222

maybe its time to give radiohead another try

i hated them when i first heard them.. and now look at me

i love how badly you want me to like them... ;)

thats wat ive always said, snw is like a greatest hits compilation, not so cohesive... i really dont dig it much as an album/full work of art.

oh and radiohead is amazing.truth. :)

I fucking love Brad Pitt

Starz

White Pony took me ages to get into. Then one day I gave her another try and it just clicked, it really did deserve to get album of the year in Kerrang! Self Titled is still my favourite Deftones album though... I just love the anger and emotion in it. Chino maybe was going through some tough shit during the writing of this album and it really shows on Self Titled. Lot's of anger about romance and the world...

Corleone

White pony was the first deftones album I listened to in full. It's really great song for song

Feiceteria is a great opener
digital bath is just amazing
elite is one of thier best live songs
knife prty is prob thier best work to date
korea has a great bridge
pink maggit is the best closing song ever

and the rest are just as good, the only song i don't get into is street carp, but even then its lyrics are great

aj

best album ever made.

the word groundbreaking doesn't even cover it

Crazylegs

wow, you think so?

I mean it's good, but best album ever made, groundbreaking. Can't say i agree.

E-Money

same thing happened to me with s/t. I got really into white pony right when it was released. and i still love it today. when s/t came out i was like wft. i hated hexagram and wgtb. now its by far my favorite deftones record.

it's an extreme statement but i totally agree.  there's nothing like it.  it was an interesting time for the deftones.  they were climbing with each album (adren, atf) and then white pony put them on superstar level yet with their own terms.

coreleone, i agree with your analysis but woud like to add that you can't forget the imagery in rx queen.  b/w chino's words and the vibe of the song, it's one of their best works.  also korea is one of their best too.  it's brutal but in a beautiful way....kinda like football.  finally we cannot forget "change" - the song that really broke them into the mainstream in my opinion.

interesting little story.  elite was the last song they recorded for the album.  it was stephs song and everyone felt blah about it.  he laid down the guitar and said "figure out what to do w/ it."  funny enough that was their grammy!

saturday night wrist - i agree with ya'll, it has a "greatest hits" feeling.  some of the songs are pure gold - combat, beware, kimdracula, rats, hite, etc...but for some reason they don't flow well.  it's probably a result of writing for three years all over the earth, going through different producers, and basically breaking up.  whatever...i like it b/c it portrays their lives.  it's true art, although they probably could have made something a lot darker w/ their malibu material.

Deftones-argentina

I'll never understand why Elite was the song which won the grammy.

In my opinion, Wp has some of the greatest songs ever by deftones, but I must admit I don't love every track on the album.
Oh, and to deffend the song, I LOVE street carp, one of my favourites since day 1. The drum lines on it are a bit empty, though

it may be a but far fetched, and of course there are a lot of albums that are a lot more popular and can appeal to a lot more people.

But taken in the context of the music scene at the time it was released (metal going the way of Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit) what the band did was incredibly brave.

I think back to the first time i heard the record and I knew I'd uncovered the album of my life, the one record that nothing else will come close to matching.

it's the album tha got me into Deftones to begin with. I had Around The Fur and listened to it every now and then but it didn't do that much for me. then I heard Passenger, went out and bought White Pony ASAP and fell in love. today it's still one of my all-time favorite albums and everything I've heard from Deftones/Chino since then, I have compared to White Pony. now I happen to rank SNW as my top Deftones album, but I genuinely think that it's their most fleshed out and thought-through album. it continues right where White Pony ended. it does lack the wild, experimental and free spirit that WP had, though.
