Blasphemy!

I downloaded this cd as soon as a I heard about it (don't worry, I've helped all of their other albums chart and bet your left sphincter I'll do it with this one, too) and I've listened through it probably 10-12 times and I'm just plain blown away.  First, the production... I adore the way it sounds so "huge," for lack of a better word, and it just makes me all the more pumped that this isn't the final quality so it'll only be better on CD.  Every track on the disc, the guitars, vocals, drums, bass and Frank's just have this "pop" that made each track stand out, which i felt the last couple albums lacked a little bit compared the the first 3.  Definitely some of their best sounding recordings.

Now... the music.  I don't really know where to start, I love every track, I can't really pick one I don't like.  There's something super sweet being done by one or more of them pretty much every second, from start to finish.  Steph's parts are turbo dope, ever since they posted the B8 (current dream guitar) and I saw pictures I knew his parts were gonna be straight evil this time around, and he didn't let me down.  Chino's vocals are in my current opinion his best ever, he sounds fucking awesome and you can just hear all of the influences from all of the other cds, team sleep and everything else culminating together into something he definitely also put all of his ability into and absolutely killed it.  Sergio's bass is great too, I'm always wondering what Chi would've done in his place when I hear his tracks, but Sergio definitely didn't slack and laid down some sick bass.  Abe sounds fresh as hell too, some of the best drumming I've heard from him as well.  Probably some of the most varied playing too, but it all fits with the songs absolutely perfectly.  And definitely some of Frank's best material as well, it really stands out.

I could go on for hours, but in summation I'll just say that I was never really worried that they wouldn't knock it out of the park, and even through my optimism they fuckin blew me away.  Can't wait for this CD to become a part of my life like the others.  Props Deftones, major, major props.

P.S. CMND/CTRL gives me a painfully full boner

im impressed that nobody has touch the issue of  "selling out". we can agree that the straight up pop forwardness of some this songs, could be interpreted as a sign.

i guess we all pretty mature by now.

actually Im happy with the direction they took with this album, Im happy they included more pop and rock (with rock i mean just rock, instead of metal) elements while keeping it deftones. They are getting older and if they keep exploring in this direction I could see them still putting great great records in 10+ years.

Flowb

Don't compare Deftones to Korn, it's not nice. Deftones are awesome and have never released a bad album, Korn should have stopped after album 3 or 4.

Dienekes

I agree with others. The whole korn comparison is unwarranted. They still put the same stale as shit out. Deftones have managed to evolve and stay relevent.

Look at a band like U2, like them or not they manage to put out albums that keep them relevent. Look at the difference between Joshua tree and auchtung baby, those are worlds apart even though they came back to back. Both albums managed to keep the bands "sound" even though they are totally different.

I bring this up because I think Deftones have this same unique and special gift. If I compared the bands I would actually say Deftones has become more relevent and evolved over time while U2 have become less so...

i dont know if any of you noticed this, but i think diamond eyes is a real straight-forward song/message about chi. this is what i get from the chorus:

time will see us realign (we will be together again)
diamonds ring? across the sky (miracles happen every day) (i think it's ring even tho others say reign)
i will lead us to the same realm (i will help you all the way)

also, lines like

when the coffin shakes
when the needle breaks (when all is realized and chi wakes up, chino offering his hand into the next process... living)

also

to the edge, til we all get off (until the end, giving it 110%)
i will take you home?/away? with me, once and for all (basically saying ill take you away from all the shit youve been experiencing and never let it happen again.

there's another chorus, something like

calculate our embrace, hold on (keep being positive)
[come with me now] and run away to outerspace with me, once and for all (...and ill take you as far away from this state youve been in as i can)

just sayin.

it's probably because Deftones can't really sell out. it's not like they've moved more towards the mainstream - they've always had pretty simple song structures and catchy choruses, and their height of success was during the nu-metal era where while they were pretty different from the other bands (read: way more talented), they still played the same kind of music. for Deftones to sell out, they'd have to do a colab with Lil' Wayne and put chino on an autotuner. and throw in some of those disco beats the hardcore kiddies love these days.
pray nightfall release me
then i could wander, wander to deep sleep

can't get the sextape chorus out of my head, and i don't want it out

agreed, i think the point in question is the straightforwardness of the pop sensibility that is presented here.

ill say it again, a think is pretty evident that the chorus reads: "diamond rain across the sky" is seems logical now with the semantic.

i insist that to me the straightforwardness was unexpected (in a good way of course)

i really think most of you havent notice the "the" before mindset...i think is there everytime. "the mindset of a killer". im just saying, get a close listen.

Vesanic

Am I the only one to think that Prince tastes like an S/T song mixed with RX Queen ? I love it anyway.

Jacob

I've tried figuring out which previous era some songs "belong" to, and while it often leans towards ATF I keep hearing influences from all previous albums all over the place - even in the same songs. which is great, because it means this is really the best of the best so to speak.

i don't HAVE to, i just choose too, cause DE is a killer tune. it's one of those album that's easy to listen to from start to finish

Ha, I have to man, just because Diamond Eyes is easily one of the best songs they've ever written and then Royal just fits right after it..

korn hasn't been anywhere close to solid since 1997, give or take a year or two, and i used to be a huuuge fan.  What a terrible, terrible band they turned into.  Not at all comparable to Deftones, even in their very worst moments.

nyquil_addict133

Korn is so bad now its not funny. I love Life is peachy and even Follow the leader. What they produce now is comedy.
