I still can't say if this is better than SNW but it has had a very GOOD first-feeling on everyone in here... I know I'm not wrong.

I remember everyone saying SNW was shit, but at the end it was a grower, imo.

sextape kinda has a teenager feel to it

thats because they are both team sleep songs.deftones has put 1 team sleep song on each def rec for the last ten years, its nothing new. the only new this time is that they put a guitar based TS song on it (sextape) insted of an electronic TS track

also royal, prince, risk and CMND/CTRL are the highlights for me

my 4 favs also, in that order too. i also enjoy ystb as nr 5, excellent soft song without sounding team sleep. steph was saying he was playing more melodic stuff on the guitar on this record, i guess the chorus on ystb is somewhat melodic

if u sit down and write down what u like about deftones you will find yourself finding all of that at DE

You're wrong when you explain what I ( me vesanic ) think about the deftones. Still, your reference to DE is full of sense and totally probable. You're so fuckin' smart, sweden prick. :)

absolutely INCREDIBLE. thank you deftones. chino is god. i'm addicted to "Prince" awesome song! The whole album just fucking rocks. much better than SNW. deftones = life and my english is not good im sorry.

i just miss one "eletronic" song like Lucky You or Pink Cellphone hah but still a great deftones album!

I can't wait to buy the album in a record store  :D

This album is ridiculous. I was expecting good things from all the reviews like Zane Lowe on Radio 1 but this has just blown me away first listen.

There are maybe one or two which dont knock me over but it really is heavy as fuck in places whilst being spacey and atmospheric in others and chinos vocals sound huuuuge. For once what he said in interviews is actually true. OK maybe not THE heaviest album but they're all pushing mid-30s, they gotta let up a bit. The low bass on that 8-string is so good, i like when stef just does little snippets of low low bass before going into some higher end stuff. His guitaring has really stepped up in my opinion. He's got some wicked little fills going on throughout the album, and he hasn't just done some ridiculous heavy riff the whole time.

All in all, the album is really upbeat and refreshing - such good energy throughout. My personal favourite is 976-EVIL at the moment (not many seem to be diggin it??). The song is so fresh and upbeat, nice little guitar fill, spacey vocals - nice lyrics, and really chilled drum beat from Abe!

Can't wait to see how some of these songs translate live, especially unusual tracks like sextape. In the meantime time to get the play count up..!

Generally speaking I did enjoy the album quite a lot, but not as much as I had expected.
But that's nothing bad, really.

Diamond Eyes.. as an opener is quite a good song, though I'm somewhat turned off by the instrumentals on the chorus, but the lyrics do kinda drag me up to the goodness anyway. The sudden jump to Royal and CMND/CTRL (yes, we all expected an another konami code song) was kinda expected for the first part of an album, which was written in a couple of months. Overly speaking the instrumental part is not the strongest player in some of the songs (for example, Risk, CMND/CTRL etc; where singing/lyrics is the main ingredient, kinda), but then it is completely revived on You've Seen the Butcher, which is a bliss to hear. What I love is the somewhat Team Sleep'ish outcome of the chorus, where the chorus becomes more of a bridge, yet still fully blows your mind away.

Beauty School was nice, and I quite saw the reference towards Digital Bath, it was okay I guess - not bad, not too good, did not imprint on my mind as easily as, say, Butcher, Sextape etc. Prince.. well, the only thing I remember of this song is it was quite emotional, nothing musically yet; but what do I expect from a first-timer, only the majorly accessible or wonderful musically songs get written into my head. Rocket Skates - well, at first listen (couple of months ago, live one) did not do the trick for me, but after watching the video couple of times, I kinda fell into this "increased repetition" based song. Now it is okay - glad I did not overlisten to it as a single. And then the good part..

..Sextape. yeah, a slow emotional song. Change, BQAD, Anniversary, Cherry Waves. Mellow stuff.. highly sexual, lol. Favorite I guess. I did not care much for Risk anyway. It was okay. 976-EVIL or should I say Cheng-song, was highly emotional, and did kinda set the tone for This Place is Death - a LOST inspired (lol) emotional finale. Well, not as much finale as just being emotional. I kinda wished there was some kind of explosion at the very end, cause emotionally driven power chords go throughout this album and it becomes nothing new at the last song, but I guess you cannot want too much for a "two-month written album" from a band that takes years to fully shape their albums.

All in all - major pros: emotionally charged, bringing back the sexy/porn/rape/even filthy atmosphere (which makes Deftones evidently different from most new wave metal bands), quite well sculpted. Cons: sometimes a bit dull instrumental part, the individual song structure kinda too traditional. Just my thoughts.. :)

thats whats they've been doing all along ever since day one. if u want complex, complicated song structures, there are other bands. not this band. seeking up a deftones record and then complain its too traditional in the song writing is like going to the sahara desert and complain about there is too much sand there

gui

I'm probably hallucinating shit, but i feel like the chorus of Prince is the closest thing from adrenaline they have recorded since then,,,,Mindset of a killerrr....awesome

every band should be best at everything they do. that is not an excuse. What I meant by my post - in other songs Deftones prove to use a variety of more "interesting" ways of playing the same thing. And in this album, instrumental part in some songs is not exactly their strength. And I'm pretty sure Deftones are capable of that. I'm not saying, that "wow, this album is piece of shit" because of that. I'm just saying there's space for improvement. And at the same time I am "defending" the Deftones by saying, that this album was written in a haste and couldn't really have been too complex or somewhat.

m1nusblindfoLd

it's all so good, but I'm really into Royal (obv) right now, YSTB, and Prince!!

Cobhammar

Really enjoying Sextape right now. Prince was badass too

kameron632

Prince is the shit!
Beauty School gets me in a really good mood!
Risk is just so damn good!
CMND/CTRL is fuckin dope!
Royal is everything that Deftones are!

I love Deftones for their originality, but this album is not Deftones, is not original. It has some parts inside some songs that are worth listening, but i don't like most of the album...
I'm a hardcore Deftones fan, but this is not what i like about them. I hope Eros can see the light sooner to replace this.

It's not original? Interesting.

:D Yeah I can see The Cure influence on Beauty School and Meshuggah influence on some riffs, of course the 8 string guitar helps! and Chino voice is totally dinamic, he doesnt sound like he is dying, he is pretty alive on this one!! He just screams his lungs out!

It's starting to piss all over SNW for me and I love SNW!

The production is just excellent. S/T sounded so raw and filthy, which was perfect because it's a very dark album. Then SNW was hard to place. But Diamond sounds like White Pony was released not long before it!
