The Autumn Project - This We Take With Us (2009)V0

01. Song #1
02. Song #2
03. Song #3
04. Song #4
05. Song #5
06. Song #6
07. Song #7
08. Song #8

QuoteThese eight tracks are no short stories; rather, they are fully-fledged chapters in a larger work, which comprises the whole record. In an industry which often seems to spend so little focus on the composition of the album as a complete work, The Autumn Project blazes ahead with a shining example of what heights musical interrelation can bring to post-rock. re reassembled once more, towering even higher this time, before finally exploding in the final minutes of "8", eventually giving way to faceless static. This We Take With Us is a truly post-rock album, as few have been before, in that the micro- and macro-organizations resemble, inform, and affect one another. To put it perhaps rather bluntly, this is that seventy-four minute cohesive post-rock song you've always dreamed about - or which I have.
This is the best damn post-rock I've heard all year. This We Take With Us is truly a novel of an album. This is extraordinary music, and I would advise you quite strongly to pay attention to it.

yeah, downloaded this quite a while ago with high hopes.
and if to talk about new postworthy releases:

Crippled Black Phoenix - 200 Tons of Bad Luck ;
Motek - Port Sunshine ;
Wixel - Somewhere Between the Sun and the Moon ;
The Ascent of Everest - How Lonely Sits The City .

nope, no links here. google the thing:)

ben

could you give some RIYL on those releases?  I'm lazy and don't want to get something unless it sounds like the type of post-rock i enjoy.

Excellent cinematic heaviness from the midwestern trio The Autumn Project, whose meditative post rock glides blissfully through huge slabs of crushing, heavenly distortion. RIYL: Explosions in the Sky, Mogwai, Sigur Ros.

Starz, I wouldn't say that The Autumn Project is like Explosions in the Sky or Sigur Ros. It's way heavier. It's one step away from Russian Circles, even Isis.. somewhat. Cause they really do enjoy noises and stuff.

Crippled Black Phoenix - 200 Tons of Bad Luck ; RIYL: Red Sparowes (well only one track.. still); some desert-ish stuff. this band contains vocals.
Motek - Port Sunshine ; RIYL: no idea. seriously. it's just too.. unique?
Wixel - Somewhere Between the Sun and the Moon ; RIYL: less electronic Boards of Canada, Team Sleep.. somewhat :)
The Ascent of Everest - How Lonely Sits The City . RIYL: GY!BE, ASMZ

Junius - The Martyrdom of a Catastrophist [2009]

QuoteThe tireless and ever-touring bearded men of Junius are releasing their new record, The Martyrdom of a Catastrophist, this Fall on The Mylene Sheath (North America / UK) and Make My Day Records (Europe). Preparation for the long-awaited album began in 2006, with month-long writing/recording sessions in such unconventional locales as a bank vault in California, a warehouse in Texas, a farmhouse in Vermont, and a shack in the swamps of Louisiana. The result is a full-fledged concept album, inspired by the life and theories of controversial scholar Immanuel Velikovsky.

From birth to death, The Martyrdom of A Catastrophist chronicles a man whose progressive theories on ancient history and the cosmos were widely challenged by mainstream academia during his lifetime. The album's ten songs are both cinematic and accessible, building to crescendos which echo some of Post Rock's most epic moments, but with vocals, hooks, and lyrics creating focus throughout. Actual quotes from Velikovsky's interviews and lectures are interspersed between songs, providing a sense of narrative to the proceedings.

Junius produced The Martyrdom at the legendary A&M Records studios in Hollywood (now known as Henson Recording) over the course of a year, somewhat guerilla-style, during off-hours when the studio wasn't booked (the band has joked that they were bumped out by everyone from Akon to Bruce Springsteen—literally). The album was recorded by Kevin Mills and Tom Syrowski (Weezer, AFI) and mastered by Dave Collins (Danny Elfman, Black Sabbath).
