It wasnt Deftones themselves that said there'd be an announcement was it? Pretty sure it was said to keep an eye out on that Sacramento news/site/whatever for some news, and they announced a show, so I'd imagine that's it.

When was this announcement for the "big announcement" originally made? Because what if it was actually just going to be info on the new tour dates and Leathers, which we already have... Maybe they just changed the dates and that's what it was. I can't think of any other big announcement that would be made anyway. We know when the album is coming out, and stuff like album art wouldn't warrant a "big announcement". So perhaps that's all that was...
