Something that's always bugged me....where on EARTH do these artists get the direct layers for these songs?  They obviously have chino's vocals on a seperate track, etc.  A lot of re-mix artists have access to it, and I KNOW they aren't getting them from the actual song itself (There's no program that can do a perfect vocal/instrumental extraction).

labels and bands gives the multitracks to the remixers. Nowdays some bands even sell it online (for example Radiohead), others give it for free (example: NIN), but most dont really bother.

if your a good mixer than you can separate the vocals and stuff pretty well. Idunno how, but my friend is in a DJ and Drum Duo here in calgary and he does Mash-ups using just the straight up tracks and finds a way to get rid of the drums and mix in alternate bass lines etc etc

I have no idea how he does it though. lots of work I guess

If its an official remix you get the individual stems from the original studio recording, its the only way to get a clean sound and allows you to remix a track properly, Diamond Eyes we only used Chinos vocals & a couple of fx from the original track.

You can get vocals out of the original track but by the time you have eq'd and hidden most of the backing the vocals end up sounding terrible and messy + you have all that background noise so you can make any key changes etc.
