Walking from car park to arena at Download festival in 2007, tripped over the kerb, went fucking flying and ripped my knee and leg to pieces. Stood up and tried to act as though nothing happened (even with all the blood), despite the family pissing themselves with laughter and everyone around laughing as well.... :-\

Deftones to release new album in January 2010. Do you agree with me ?  ;)

Yes please...    :)

With the bass player in a coma state, Deftones prepares a new album and comes to Brazil.
Unconscious for almost one year, Chi Cheng will be replaced for the former Quicksand bass player.
In an interview to G1, lead singer says that the musician is 'getting better slowly'.

Two and a half years after their last performance in Brazil (the first one was in 01/2001 @ Rock in Rio 3), the metal band Deftones come back depleted. The bass player Chi Cheng, a huge presence in the stage with his long hair and tattooed body, is in a coma state since 11/2008, when he almost died in a car accident.

In Cheng's place, former member from the original line up of the band, created in 1988 in Sacramento (California), the person thats going to play in the first night of the Maquinaria Festival, in Sao Paulo, on november 07, is the ex Quicksand bass player, Sergio Vega. The musician became a friend of the members of Deftones in 1996, in a tour where both bands were playing together. "Ten years ago, Chi broke his foot and had to leave the tour. Then we called Sergio, he learned the songs and finished the tour with us", says Chino Moreno, the lead singer of Deftones, in a telephone interview to G1.

More than a paid musician, Vega became part of the bands history since Chi's accident. Back then, the Deftones had a new record almost done, "Eros", that was about to come out in june of 2009, but the tragedy made the band think about the future of that record. "We thought for a while, if we would keep going, in what we would do. We took a break and then we decided that the best thing to do would be to move on for Chi. And put all the ideas and feelings that we were feeling in our songs", reminds Chino. "We decided to call Sergio, and in some months we had a good number of new  of songs."

The unnamed record will enter in the masterization process next month and will be released in 2010, reveals Chino. "Its a brand new record. We decided to put 'Eros' away for a while. We thought that keep going and finish that record without Chi simply would not be right. We still have the songs recorded. They are very special to us and we will release it someday. I have hope that Chi will get better and we will continue from where we stopped", says the frontman, describing the sonority of the new record as 'quite agressive'.

Slow progress

About his bandmate health state, Chino confirm that "nobody knows what to expect". "The doctors cant say much other that he can wake up tomorrow or in a year from now. They say that anyone that says something different doesnt know what they are talking about. But they also say that Chi is make slow progress, his vitals are good. His body is strong and he is holding tight, even with the severe head trauma he suffered".

The Chi's accident occurred in november 3rd of 2008, at night, in Sacramento. The musician, with 38 years, was in the passenger seat, without the seat belt and flew out of the car" in the moment of the crash, says Chino. The driver was using the seat belt and saved himself from something worse. In march of this year, friends, fans and Chi's relatives created the website OneLoveForChi.com, to collect support messages and donatives to pay for the hospital and treatment bills.

In a morbid coincidence, the origin of Deftones is also conected to an accident. In the 80's, with 16 years old, the guitar player Stephen Carpenter got hit by a car when he was in the street with his skateboard. Hospitalized for weeks, he used the rest time to practice with his Guitar and used the medical insurance money to buy music equipments.

"Everyone in the neighborhood used to come to his house to practice and play. But only three years after the accident, we really started the band. At that time, he had sold all the equipment", laughs Chino with the history. "Its almost everything true, but its not a fairy tale like it sounds".

Asked if the recent episode with the bass player could be seen as a new possibility to make the band stronger to overcome the last band issues, Chino said: "Its possible, but at the same time, shit happens. If you think, in all these years a lot of positive things happened too. [The accidents] are negatives, but thats life. Theres a lot of shit, but we have our friends, the most important thing. We dont have too many bands out there, for all this time, with the same and original formation members that still are friends. And thats what we are, before everything. We are friends since we were kids. The music is on the second hand. Our friendship kept us together".

Nu-metal? Thanks to Faith No More

About the show in Sao Paulo, the frontman says in advance that the band will not play "anything from the new record". The set list, though, must be built with tracks of all five records, including "Adrenaline" (1995), "White Pony" (2000) and the latest, "Saturday Night Wrist" (2006). "We have 30 or 40 songs that we can play. We usually decide, in the day before or a few hours before the show, what we will play. We will make the setlist thats natural for us".

Chosen to play in the same night with the legendary Faith No More, Chino Moreno celebrates the choice. "Faith No More was one of the first bands to make music inspired by the metal, but with rhythm and a lot more melody than anyone before. They were a big inspiration to us, to create heavy music, but that wasnt heavy metal. In fact, to be honest, if theres a thing called nu-metal, thats the band that started everything. Its funny that other bands earn the credit for it", says Chino, ironically, referring to the 90's movement that revealed bands like Korn, Limp Bizkit and the Deftones itself.

Two of the bands that will play in the same day with the Deftones, are regarded as influences, says Chino: "Jane's addiction inspired me in a lot of things on the vocals" - and Sepultura - "the guitar riffs and the drums from 'Chaos A.D.' and 'Roots' also inspired our first two records". Friend of the brazilian musicians, the Deftones frontman made appearances with Soulfly, the other project from the ex lead singer from Sepultura, and he recently joined the Cavalera Conspiracy on the stage to play with the new project from the Cavalera's brothers, Max and Iggor.

"[Max] its a great guy. I still have hopes to see the original line up back again". The current line up has Andreas Kisser and Paulo Jr, with the vocalist Derrick Green and the drummer Jean Dolabella.

I know it's kind of off topic, but the fact that since chi's accident we haven't recieves Team sleep words at all is intriguing.

nice to see Faith No More and Jane's Addiction getting some recognition. I've suspected for a long time that Chino was vocally inspired by Perry Farrell.
pray nightfall release me

I refuse to accept this as truth until it's from an official source.  In recent live performances Chino has said "later this year" also "hopefully by the end of the year" in a newer interview from the Area4 festival.  Let's chill and see what happens when they get back from the tour with Slipknot.

Starz

Dude you should know by now that when the band say they will release an album at a certain time in the year, you gotta add a couple of years to that.
