Is it just me or does Swerve City sound like it could be a sort of homage to the band Swervedriver? That shoegazy verse part has a bassline that sounds a lot like the one in Swervedriver's own Duel. Listen here:

Thoughts?
How neat, I'm impressed.
How did you come to be...so blessed?

if you relate it to a girl it may sounds cliche, but if you relate it to 'your best friend that had a coma because of car accident', it would have a deeper meaning, lol

Love how you got pretty much every lyric there wrong, give yourself a round of applause. And I can respect the fact you dislike KNY, but you just look like a child trying to make fun of it. You could just as easily put 'LOL' next to any of those other lyrics.

Well this isn't fair. Every band gets to have a tongue-in-cheek song with simple lyrics.

I don't know if you're a Smashing Pumpkins fan ... but that's kind of what Romantic Dreams reminds me of. Especially with the "I wish this night would never end", really mirroring Billy's own lyrics "Today is the greatest day I've ever known."

Also, I agree that lyrics in the last couple of albums have not been the same. Even though he still puts out some great imagery:

"Forty years in the wind, I've played with you
For the rest of our days, I remain
The sky is falling down, the night is calling you
A star is burning out, the sky belongs to you"

I've spent a week with it now, and I'm in love with this album.  And this is from someone who didn't care too much for Diamond Eyes, expect for a handful of songs.  In fact, KNY is everything I wanted DE to be. Had it on loop the entire week, and with every listen I find something new to love about this album.  Tempest by far is my favourite track...a Deftones classic.  Leathers is close to the top as well - that chorus is some of the most powerful songwriting I've heard from the Deftones.  Very happy indeed :)

Chino is still capable of writing the more cryptic stuff he still does in Crosses stuff probably wants the focus to be on how the music sounds

Chino isnt Robert Smith or Morrissey when it comes to lyrics and words...never has been, never will be...so to the people looking at his lyrics to find some poetic emotional meaning, you should probably check out The Smith's if you want deep rooted passages....shit, check out some Pantera songs, underneath Phil Anselmos screaming, there are some of the deepest lyrics you will ever hear

TheShade1989

To me, Feiticeira, Knife Prty, Korea, Digital Bath, Mascara...that's the kind of lyric style I love. Story-telling but glimpses of images and emotion and whatever. Nothing gets better than that to me. But...it changes album-to-album, sometimes even song-to-song, so it is what it is. I dont see what's so bad about the Romantic Dreams line compared to, for example, "I want to be just like you, then I'd be cool". But different ppl have their different outlooks on everything, including the lyrics.

it's "I want to be just like you, then I'd be cool... maybe not" i think he's being sarcastic. you can still hate it of course but it's the opposite meaning of what you wrote

sooniletugo

The Romantic Dreams line isn't bad at all though. It's pretty effective and creepy if you ask me.

alot of the lyrics people consider positive, i consider really sad/dark. like entombed, whty, beauty school, etc. if you've lost your true love forever those kinda lyrics are not so positive. so it's all about how people veiw the stuff. alot of the lyrics are just images & metaphoric & can't really be called positive or negative. i just like all different vibes, moods & lyrics from them. they're a good band & they write good tunes (that's how i see it. i don't demand a certain vibe or mood, otherwise they'd be H.I.M. writng the same song over & over, "heartache ooohh my heart")

and yes "gift" is incredible, & it's pretty uplifting

I think a lot of it has to with Chi before his accident they looked at what was wrong with their lives now they appreciate every day knowing it could all end in an instant you might think it's oblivious and naive but i just think their seeing the magic of the small stuff people take for granted, stuff that Chi can't do any-more when you see someone going through something like that it's hard to complain any-more, I'm young also and it's something i hate about my generation beautiful things are hardly appreciated, young people are afraid to say something is beautiful instead everyone hops on the bandwagon and calls it gay and cheesy because it's not cool to say something is beautiful it's seen as a weakness

DeftonesNZ

Sometimes the biggest fans are also the biggest critics and i agree about it being absurd that some people will look to senior members for validation but you can't blame guys like V for being honest when asked and if there are people that will change their entire view of the band because he or someone else said they weren't good then they can fuck off anyway those people would have only stuck round until they discover their next "favourite band" in a couple of weeks.

There's a large amount of ppl on who need his opinion to validate how they feel about Deftones which is also ridiculous

??? are you really sure about this? i mean it doesn't have to be ppl changing their own opinions bc of what V says, it could be ppl just agreeing on something he says bc they feel the same way? but if it's like you say on other forums, then it's really retarded. like "he posts a huge amout of videos on youtube, therefore his opinion on deftones must be the real to have no matter what i think on my own". but that's not really V's fault, you have to blame the ppl thinking like that

as I said, gibberish.

often nonsensical and even grammatically incorrect.

he can write amazing lyrics, but some of his old lyrics are kinda messy and just trying too hard to be cryptic.

the Romantic Dreams line (a well as the rest of the songs) is very straight forward and simple, but I think he shows that he can write such lyrics equally good. you can tell there's a lot of emotion behind it, he doesn't sing about love just for the sake of it.

one could actually do a similar list to yours but turn it around and show the less stellar lyrics from older albums and compare to some really poetic and immaginative lyrics from newer songs. but I can't be bothered right now.
pray nightfall release me

from_musings

i've never been a big fan of his lyrics. some cool phrases here and there - sure, but for me it always has been more about how he says/sings something, how he expresses himself, more than what he actually says/means
