Ok.. after listening to What happened to you and reading the lyrics... that song is the most beautiful they've ever written. Hands down. May be their best song ever.

Those days are over, but he is almost 40 now, I doubt he still has the mindset of the Chino that wrote 7 Words or Lotion. Hexagram is heavy-emotional though, so that's different. Still, it's obvious that he's mellowed out now and isnt much into consciously making super-aggressive music. I can live with that, we have his old albums for that. Better that than him being in his 40s tryna scream like he used to about shit that makes him angry. I think there are plenty of new bands who make pissed off music that he feels there's no need to force it outta him wen he's chilled out.

Sometimes I feel like people want him to be constantly depressed and pissed at the world.

don't forget on drugs

That too.

I'm a huge Mars Volta fan and there's been similar criticisms since they sobered up post-Frances The Mute, but more in the 'they aren't weird or complex enough anymore' and 'remake Deloused' veins.

Apparently heavy drug use has been beneficial all along!

That's funny, I think it is the worst song they've ever done and I always skip it.

I have no idea. FTM is one of their best tracks. Don't know if you have the cd but the lyrics for it are printed underneath the disc tray. I don't know if it was meant to go on there or they just left the lyrics in as some kind of cryptic thing to link up with the concept. One of the best b-sides ever in my opinion. The riff towards the end is absolutely INSANE.

And yeah, sorry didn't mean to go off topic.

Errr... DEFTONES ARE AWESOME.  :D

I have heard some crap about it simply not being on there because there wasn't enough space on the disc. But, really, if that was the reason they could've just cut some of the "atmospheric noise" out and fitted it on there quite comfortably. Clearly some more thought out reason - I guess to just give the track some cult status maybe. It's a shame, as I said I LOVE that album but if they'd cut some of the fat off and put FTM on there, it would probably be my favourite album by any band hands down.

I'm SERIOUSLY going to stop talking about The Mars Volta now.

Back on topic: Romantic Dreams is quickly climbing my fav. track list off KNY

That too. I'd rather they made crappy music but were happy and healthy than make awesome music but all be depressed and fucked up. I dont really put their creativity down to drug use, I think it just took the lyrics in a different direction and the themes, but even so, I always find it weird wen ppl say they wish ____ was back on drugs for the sake of music. And since you mentioned The Mars Volta, same with them too. They've lost a few ppl frm heavy drug use but as long as they make another Deloused In The Comatorium, it's all good? Eh, seems very selfish.

Couldn't agree more with this. Creativity comes from people, not substances. All drugs can ever do, apart from fuck up their lives, is channel that creativity in a certain way. But great artists find other ways of doing that.

Moz

So I think I listened to it close to 30 times now in the weekend. Also with mates, before going out. And on various other moments of the day.

I keep loving this record more and more. Its so diverse, 'whole', such a unique sound. I love this new Deftones, sorry. Im not a big metalhead for years now and it seems the Tones are growing up with me.

Whereas the harder songs like Goon Squad and Poltergeist were my favorites in the beginning, now songs like Entombed and What Happened to You have become my favorite.

TheyCallMeP

After listening to the album a few times, I'd have to say Poltergeist, Rosemary, and Romantic Dreams are my favorites followed by Entombed then Goon Squad (but mainly bc of how it segues with the end of Rosemary). KNY is completely different then what I had imagined but still an excellent album. I think it came up a few pages back but if I had to compare it to any of their other records it would be Saturday Night Wrist, in my opinion. I feel like Swerve City was overhyped by every review and feels unfinished to me. I just consider it an intro track really. Other than that I have no complaints. Tempest still sounds as monstrous as ever to me and will probably evolve into one of my favorites on the disc.

Gauze opening riff sounds something out of a korn album. I like it though.

Yep, that was the first thing I thought of when I heard it too.
