Hey guys, I wanted to make a tribute to my favourite song of Deftones, which is Xerces, so I made a vocal cover based on Bob Ezrin sessions demo. Added a small part of mine becouse the first verse is longer than the original, other than that tried to stay true to the spirit as much as I could with my voice while retaining my personal dedication. Do you like it?

Xerces by Deftones - vocal cover

Penicks

i don't like it

when you imitate a singer of a band, people are going to compare you with him, so if it's not exactly like the original, people will not like it

better to make your own version, try an acoustic or something

some of deftones acoustic covers on youtube are beautiful

this was pretty bad

CaveSoundMeister

Yes indeed, I wanted to, but I want to focus on training my vocals right now, seeing how different effects work, and stuff, a big learning experience for me. If I do my stuff it will probably be my stuff, not a cover.

BTW: there IS some individual touch, you noticed 1:25-1:47? - it's all mine.

Anyway I appreciate your time.

Cheers.

Penicks

actually yeah i liked that ambient part

yeah

Nice try but sorry it's too high for ya I think... ahem, weak chorus.

Oh my...that guy will have EMI or Warner Bros banging on his door in no time. Nothing equals money like a ginger beard.

I bet he does covers to pick up underage girls

CaveSoundMeister

Well... thanks guys for this..umm... not so positive feedback :) Anyway Penicks you are probably right, from what response I got so far, most fans of Deftones seem not to like my voice, while people who don't know much about Deftones, or don't know this particular song, tend to be very positive about it. I just love to sing this song, listening to it is just half as fun as singing along. So i'll still finish the covers, but next time I'll keep this joy for myself 'couse most people don't seem to be interested in sharing it (although overall i recieved more positive comments than negative, believe it or not, and they're not from my family). I'll share my own stuff instead when it's ready.

Just remember that Chino himself has problems doing his own stuff live and sometimes it is as off-key as the guy above. And that the chorus part in studio version is much more heavily distorted by effects than mine, in fact you can hear that the highest notes are equalised differently than the rest of the vocal part in order to give it more kick.

I'm not so much moved by the failures of the guy above, I may be biased but i think the more people sing, the better. It's our culture that turns the pure fun of singing into competition. If it isn't so, then we would probably never heard Chino's beautiful parts 'couse technically he's not so good - but who cares, when he has a beautiful tone and creative strength?

I kind of liked your version man, that was quite a good job. I don't agree on some changes you did but some others are classy. The chorus, needs a bit more practise, but you'll succceed.what's really is that it was you trying to be you and not somebody else.

The guy reminds me of Newton Faulkner, If Newton Faulkner was a Canadian pothead

You know.. I don't think you sound half bad CaveSoundMeister. I would EQ some of that sibilance out of your vox though.

CaveSoundMeister

you mean the air in the voice, or the consonants like "s", "sh" and stuff?

One_Weak

i personally thought it was a very good "personal cover," which you don't necessarily try to nail Chino's vocals so much as hit (or come close to) cretain notes, maintain melody and rhythm, while sustaining your own personal touch and feel to the song. that's what singing is all about; it's not like you're posting your cover and claiming that it's better than the original or matches its quality. it's a good cover and i like the touch you put on it, i can tell you're emotionally involved especially during the chorus

so thumbs up!  :)
Biggest Musical revelation in my life so far: Deftones indulgence in August 2010 thanks to Diamond Eyes album (despite faves being Adrenaline & ATF). Been obsessed ever since. First concert for them in Baltimore 5/17, fucking aweso\m/e
