Hey everybody, I'm a mod over at the deftones reddit page and I am putting together a song spotlight per week and wanted to see if any of you would be interested in providing me with any extra info or to correct any inaccuracies to my post (and hey, maybe some of you don't know some of this stuff?) Thanks in advance for anything you guys can provide.
Title: Minerva
Album: Deftones (self titled)
Music Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLa0-sQg1YM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLa0-sQg1YM)
Fun Facts:
* Red Faced was the working title for Minerva. / also have info that says "The Late Great Planet Earth" was the working title.
* Apparently the video for Minerva was shot during a sand storm. "The shoot eventually took 22 hours to complete, with Abe Cunningham saying that "[the shoot] sucked" and Chi Cheng calling it "terrible", but conceding that "it [is] a trippy video. I actually like it a lot".

>Minerva (Etruscan: Menrva) was the Roman goddess of wisdom and sponsor of arts, trade, and strategy. She was born with weapons from the godhead of Jupiter. From the 2nd century BC onwards, the Romans equated her with the Greek goddess Athena. She was the virgin goddess of music, poetry, medicine, wisdom, commerce, weaving, crafts, and magic. She is often depicted with her sacred creature, an owl usually named as the "owl of Minerva", which symbolizes that she is connected to wisdom.

Lyrics
I get all...numb
When she sings it's over
Such a strange numb
And it brings my knees to the earth
And God bless you all
For the song you saved us...
You're the same...numb
When you sing it's over
Such a strange numb
It could bring back peace to the earth
So God bless you all
For the song you saved us...oh...
For the hearts you break, every time you moan...
I get all...numb
We're the same numb
And it brings our knees to the earth
So God bless you all
For the song you saved us..oh...
For the hearts you break, every time you moan
And God bless you all on the earth...

Nice post. My understanding is that Minerva was previously titled "The Late Great Planet Earth," but it got rejected last minute by WMG as being too morbid.

Interesting. Via deftones world I got different information but I'm seeing this stated throughout the internet so I'll put both until I can get some sort of confirmation on either.I just saw deftonesworld lists them both as working titles.
The tab is off. I haven't found any that are totally accurate.

Ahh good call. I don't have the flac version so unless somebody else has it for reup I'll just note that the link is broken.
Romain added the FLAC soundboard to the Pinkpop 2003 vid.. i'd use that one instead. Sounds a bit better.

Good call.
I think another early working title was "Aria".
According to http://www.deftonesworld.com/deftones-self-titled-tentative-song-names/ (http://www.deftonesworld.com/deftones-self-titled-tentative-song-names/) Ves is right.
Oops, my bad.
Some "secrets" about Minerva.
This is (arguably) the first deftones' song with three guitars, you can hear them during the verses, Steph's guitar, Chino's guitar and a 3rd one that does arpeggios.
Minerva was the Etruscan counterpart to greek goddess Athena and was the goddess of war (among other talents), this song title makes more sense when you see other song titles on the album referencing war and violence: Battle-axe, Deathblow, Bloody Cape and also the skull on the album cover.
The working title of Minerva was "The Late Great Planet Earth" which is also a 70's book and movie about christian prophecies of the end times.

Accordingly to Chino (while recording the vocal track) he wanted to emulate the voice of a mother singing a lullaby to a baby.
On the music video, around 1:24 you can see the "Fender" decal on Chi's bass covered with masking tape. (Just a minor detail)

Interesting. Do you have a source for this? Also, thanks for the links to the covers / notable section.

Sorry I dont remember... but years ago I became obsessed with that song and I tried to find out every detail I could about Minerva (and s/t in general) and I read everything... interviews, reviews, articles, etc.
I mailed this info to deftonesworld.com hoping that they would include it on the site (as part of the "Secrets" section) but it never happened. I copy/pasted the text from that email.
In 1996 Chino shared in an Interview with Abe and Stef (05:20) that he dreamt of filming a music video in the deasert some day.

... cost the video for Minerva. :D
In that video, where it says "On the couch with DEFTONES" the font used makes it look like the DE era band logo.

That's an awesome foreshadowing. The interviewer was like "Somehow I don't think so" but they did it. :P

Gracias, Jorge.
I was watching the video and tears of joy appeared in my eyes... definetly on my Top 5 Deftones songs, and a simple but very enjoyable video.
