Finally. Wonder what happened to the video for Tempest. Then again, they did say they wanted Swerve City to be the first single, so maybe they were able to get the video for it afterall.
I wonder if it could actually be a hit.
Finally! I've been eagerly anticipating a video
Filmed in Manchester I believe
confirmed via: http://thatfilmduderyan.com/ (http://thatfilmduderyan.com/)
About damn time!!!!!!
I know that some people don't care about music videos but I think music videos are great! ...... even if ones from Deftones are often not any good ???
Maybe since they wanted Swerve City to be the first single they're releasing that video first then tempest? Who knows.

Feature: Directing with Deftones
So as some of you might have spotted on Monday, I directed the newest video for Deftones. A bit out of left field for many I'm sure, because some might think that as soon as you get an offer like that you're shouting from the rooftops. But for me it was much different.
This year, more than ever, I feel a tremendous responsibility to the professionalism within my job (I wanna take it to another level). It's always been there, but I'm more conscious about my actions as a director and how they reflect on my company/myself. So when the emailed rolled into my inbox from the record label I couldn't quite believe what I was reading, but at the same time felt so ready for the opportunity. Then within 24 hours it had been decided that the video was going to be shot in LA instead. I was still pretty high on the fact I'd been offered the job of and directing/producing a video for one of my all time favourite and most respected bands, so it didn't sting that much. But then a week later the circumstances changed again and the job was back on in the UK. This is without a doubt a milestone in my directing career, however it's just the start of some greater 'personal plans'; it's another run on a life long ladder.
Normally I have so much to say on something like this, but evermore I find that I don't really want to say too much about these 'special projects' (naturally when the release comes I'll always talk about the technical side). There are some things in life that really should be left to your own memories and this is one such thing. The world is fast becoming a much more transparent place with everyone wanting to 'kiss and tell' on anything and everything. I don't want to be one of those people, and I don't want to brag or put down in solid every little thing that went on in the day. But one thing I will say is that it is one of the most gratifying feelings in the world to work along side people you've respected for such a long time. It then goes off the chart when you see that the respect you give, is given right back. Deftones are the coolest band on the planet and not just for their music, but their attitudes.
The job was made possible thanks to my awesome crew who I had selected specifically as a compact yet able body of people who could turn up and knock out what I wanted. It was the first time I have worked directly with Tom Welsh (pictured far right) who is without a doubt one of the most skilled young cinematographers in the UK right now. He is a peer. I have utter respect for his work and his view points. He comes from the same place as me; pure passion for doing things right with a view point of trying to 'blow minds'. Tom Griffiths (second from the left) originally wasn't going to come due to his insanely busy schedule, but an hour long phone call to him a week before hand swayed him in. How could I not have my longest running team member and friend with me, DP-ing our biggest video? It didn't make sense. It was amazing therefore to see him and Josh Mansfield working together to put into action the references and ideas I had for the shoot, and delivering them in one of the simplest yet best looking lighting setups they've done. Then there was Mark Forrer, a local guy, who I knew I could rely on to provide me with the specific shots I needed at 70-200mm. We had no idea what to expect from this shoot, I had around 5 days to produce it, but just like any other job we tackled it with the same vigor and determination.
The rest? I will not tell. Wait for the video. But for once I did actually feel like taking a little credit for this achievement. 8 years of hard work and belief in one's self seem to have given us a great prize. Then to top it all off, a bunch of hugs and a "thank you dude, you've been amazing" from the band, was more than I could ask at the end of an already mindblowing day.
What a weird yet amazing job this is.
A few stills from the shoot will surface after the release. Until then please keep an eye on Deftones respective internet sites for further release information.
Attached photo setup by Tom Griffiths.
normally I don't care much about their videos, but this time, I think it's the first time a fan from the band gets a chance, so I'm having a good feeling. plus, I love the song.
oh, and Mark forrer, he does some amazing stuff with the cameras, I've seen his work with letlive.

I hope my beautiful face was picked up in the crowd
These days it takes more than dressing fashionable to be a hipster. That being said, 90% of these dudes are probably hipsters.
Has there been any word on this since that update/group shot? I'm curious to know if it's coming out anytime soon.
fuck, this is tedious. im so tired of waiting
Swerve city video has been confirmed as finished today and was sent to warner for it to be released .. great day .. hopefully this will be out really soon, im tired of waiting.. hope it doesnt get scrapped like tempest
Better late than never. Looking forward to seeing another lousy Deftones video!

Approaching release: Deftones
Myself, mid shoot with Deftones. Sometimes you've got to stop and go through everything thats going on in your head (pictured above). It's essential just to make sure you're ticking all the boxes with regards to the vision you have for the final piece; even when Chino Moreno is stood over you (out of shot to the right).
The new video for Deftones has now been signed off with Warner USA and will be hitting your screens soon. It's been an honour and a privilege to work so closely with Deftones; producing a raw and gritty vision of the first video to come from Koi No Yokan.
Hard work pays off, never forget that.

Hole In The Earth video : random space and earth shots to justify the title and a lack of imagination.
Diamond Eyes video : random chick dress as an Owl "because-there-is-one-on-the-cover".
Sextape :...well...
We know these guys tend to lack exigence when it comes to promotion and when they come across a director who sucks, the video will too and they won't care. On the other hand you have videos like Change or Rocket Skates which are awesome to me and are good counter examples. I also like the one for BQAD actually.
At first I thought the artwork was fan-made because honestly, it sucks big time. But apparently it's not, so let's just hope the video is decent.

To me Sextape is beautiful but boring. Beauty School is kind of cool yeah, although it's made of touring footage and didn't require any special shooting.

lol the imagery in this song is too good for de band not to fuck it up with wmp visual fx
So, did this get shelved as well?

Don't think so on the radio show interview Chino and Abe did they said it was coming out anyday now. And that was like a week ago.

this attempt is just sad, whatever happened with the footage they filmed in the UK?

Like someone said on Facebook- No band, no video.

Just cos he sings the word "horses" they go and make a video about fucking horses...
I honestly thought it was a car commercial. Like I forgot about the music when the car came on screen and expected a Lexus logo to pop up at the end.
I dug it.....chick is bangin' I was hoping she was riding her horse toa deftones show, though. I love how we are left to wonder what happens. Is she gonna shoot Chino? Did Chino leave his gun at her house last night and is picking it up? Is he buying the gun from her on craigslist without a background check?

Nice cinematography, but that was pretty boring. Whatever, though.
What? Why? I don't...what?!?
Few points:
1. What happened to the footage shot in the UK? That looked good.
2. Why is Chino the only one of the band in the video?
3. Why is Chino only in the video for a total of two seconds?
4. Why did they take the song so very literally?
I was genuinely expecting a wolf to start howling. Stupid video. I think they're either messing with us or they genuinely don't care anymore. They were meant to make a video for Tempest but that disappeared, then they shot a video (a good one, by the sound of it) for Swerve City in Manchester, but instead chose to show some woman's romantic journey with a horse until she's interrupted by Chino's face for two seconds. I am very confused.
It would have been cool if she randomly passed the band playing the song during her ride.
Who really wants to watch some chick ride around on a horse?

Liked the appearance of Chino at the end though, the last 30 seconds kind of compensate for the lousy first 2.5mns. At least we know it was the latest bad Deftones video and not, as many mentionned it, a freaking car commercial.

loved the ending. reminds me of 'all you are to me is meat, now pass the flask.'
So this is what we waited for, OK. Well it is beautifully shot but Video has never been Deftones strong suit.
The best part is the end with the gun. I would like to see the story line continue with the next video. This would redeem the first I think...

I actually sort of like the way it ended. It leaves it all up to you to think about. I just wish the main part of the video included the band somehow. Even if they were characters she passed on her horse. Something. Anything.
The ending is good, the rest not so much. But damn, that woman is so hot!
Judging by the comments I think P'll give this a miss. I'll most likely stumble across it in 5 years for the first time. I've pretty much got it in my head to disregard anything from 2010 onwards.
Spent too long on her with horse but the ending was cool ,they should spliced the first two minute between footage of Chino driving to her and her fucking round with her horse instead of just squashing all the action into 30 seconds.

I have no problem with it being an artsy video but it was just poorly done without any structure, the horse stuff was all pretty with great cinematography but it got extremely boring and dragged on way too long. and no tension was built up at all ,Chino just randomly showed up, I don't get why in the first 2 minutes they didn't cut between shots of her and Chino driving or something this would have built up tension and set up the end. all the action as such was crammed into the last 30 seconds it feels like they didn't know how to end it so they just put that in.

@ryancphoto nope that's just like a secondary one. They were doing 3 vids

Performance videos suck. Seeing a band live is great, seeing a recreation of that is not. Music videos should be like short films. That said, this video was pretty shitty.

I don't hate the video because I'm not really into Deftones just for their videos (although I do like most of them), but it is disappointing. It just seems like this one was thrown together very haphazardly. It's literally like the director couldn't come up with an idea for it, so he just filmed a girl riding a horse for the majority of the video. That's really the only thing that happens in the video until the very end. As for the end, the whole Chino, a hot girl/model and a weapon concept was already done in Rocket Skates (and that general concept wasn't that interesting to begin with, so why repeat it?). I also don't care if Deftones play in the video or not. I thought the video for Sextape was beautiful and brilliant, and that's far from being my favorite Deftones song.
shitty transition.
Are you.. fucking... shitting... me.

Maybe all of the videos they will eventually release for KNY link in to each other?, either way it's a strange vid.
It's OK I guess. I just wish it wasn't so literal by having the horse in it.
I was expecting her to break her horse with strange distant voices that travelled a bit through the air.
Maybe the part where she "played around with her forces" might have made it a bit X-Rated though.

The song grew on you? It completely ruins your cheap speakers and announces the albums presence with authority.
I finally watched the video. It was a little too much of that beautiful girl riding the horse but after I recollect, the beautiful scenery makes up for it and makes you use your imagination and feel the vibes like the song already does. Plus Chino at the end was looking like he was an actor, so nice. cool video. original.

I wasn't a big fan of the ohhhh's, they bring the song down a bit for me personally. The lyrical content has already similarly been explored on feiteceira (not going to look how to spell it). Only instead of a chick breaking a guy like an animal, she threw him in a trunk back in 2000. The horse is also nothing new. Seemed like a rehash to me.

I like how you try to make a parallel between these two songs, but apart from the fact that they both describe the presence of a girl, I have to say the similarities stop there for me. To me Feiticeira is about power, possession and eventually threatening whereas Swerve is about attraction and fascination. Dream over menace.

Not trying to shit on anyone haha, but your opinion is yours. I know women are a dominant theme in Deftones but those two songs remind me of each other. The vibe is different from other songs such as Teenager, Good Morning Beautiful, or Birthmark (still dealing w women). I don't wanna make this a big thing, just my personal reasons for not fully enjoying Swerve. If you do love Swerve, that's awesome. Still Deftones.

This video is pretty much crap. Don't think its Deftones-ish at all. I can't even believe they'd approach it like this..... Not into this western vibe bullshit..... Honestly the "Hole In The Earth" video was better than this because at least that video seemed to have a sort of high concept (I think science fiction fits Deftones much better) that kind of served as a metaphor for what hes saying in the song, Its just its execution that was horrible because obviously they weren't gonna have the best effects to pull it off and the band themselves didn't seem like they were ready to be filmed that day lol.

To me it was the epitome of a modern musical video. Bands don't perform much in their videos these days and it's always in some new digital way anyway, they can't just be rocking out in the ghetto like Bored anymore. Plus Swerve City is just a completely dreamy track, so why show a performance video anyway? he's trying paint you a picture anyway. Take the trip.
I feel like the music video did Swerve City justice. I mean, c'mon man. This is Deftones we're talking about. It's not like anything they do is completley straightforward right off the bat, hahah.
Does anyone know who came up with the concept (or lack thereof...) for the video?

I meant the meaning/purpose/concept of the video. Like WHY did they chose to just have a girl riding a horse for two and a half minutes and then have Chino just show up at the end.
Guess I wasnt really clear in my thoughts, hahah.
my impression from reading previous online statements that it was going to be video made by some manchester, uk fan and it was going to be like hexagram style and most recently i was expecting deftones would postdate release and add a tribute message to chi at the end of this video.
Straightforward boring lazy video for a straightforward boring lazy song.

All things considered, I wish they'd exclusively work with directors who really, really, really get the band. Andrew Bennett gets the band, Purge gets the band, Liz Friedlander gets the band, and I'd dare to say ZFCL also does too. Stick with them motherfuckers and get good music videos!

James Minchin III directed Bloody Cape ? Well fuck me. Completely droped it on that one. Especially knowing that the guy takes great pictures.
And for the record, even if I like Andrew Bennet's work, I think Digital Bath' video is overrated. In the same genre I prefer Beauty School.
Back when they filmed this, didn't the director post some pictures from the set on his blog or am I thinking of something else? I seem to remember they had fans around a stage and not a girl on a horse.

They made 2 videos and chose to release this one. Judging from how excited that director in the UK was to work with them, I'd much rather see his video.
I don't think it was a pick one thing from the sounds of what the guys were saying they're going to release both makes sense giving they've already paid to make it unless that UK one is really bad of course.

If I like Deftones I can choose which elements to enjoy and which to put down. That's up to me as the fan, just as it is the right of everyone. You don't need to try to make me look stupid for not being a damn cheerleader for everything this band does (Although I will proudly represent pretty much everything up until Diamond Eyes). Especially when they've already lost a lot of credibility with me personally.
And Its not about what the lyrics literally mean, its more the atmosphere of the songs as well as what the lyrics LITERALLY say, instead of what they actually MEAN (And I never said EVERY Deftones song felt sci-fi, even on the surface). For example, a song like "Change". I don't see how what Chinos describing is exactly a normal set of events which could be explained without some sci fi idea or supernatural thing going on. A good majority of the songs use metaphors like this or just give off that vibe with the use of synths and outros. (I.e. "Lovers", "RX Queen", "Feiticeira", "Needles And Pins", "Pink Maggit", "When Girls Telephone Boys", "Xerces", "Riviere")
I'm not saying ALL of the songs are science fiction oriented in the sense of some stupid shit like Star Trek lol, I'm saying they have this air of mystery to them. Like somethings really NOT right, and also the effects and presets they use on the guitars and that Frank uses often times give the music more of that feel. If the Deftones songs were a story, most of these songs are that part where the shit hits the fan and what you thought was a realistic idea becomes something beyond that...... Something feels futuristic and yet harsh in a lot of the songs. They've even said when their writing they have horror movies or old school sci fi films on in the studio, and also they've used plenty of drugs in their time, when your tripping out its not exactly "realistic" lol.
And although this isn't necessarily related to *science* (though the realms of fantasy and sci fi are pretty thinly separated), its known that Deftones do have an undercurrent of occult themes in their music. (I.e. "Hexagram" as you mentioned). I almost have always imagined at S/T as the more supernatural type album, and Saturday Night Wrist as the more "space rock" type album.

Yeah people seem to put it all of Nick but Chino has said tone of the music changed because of Chi's accident, he said it made them all stop taking alot of things for granted and that it just seemed ridiculous to complain about stuff anymore when they compared their quality of life to Chi's.

The video was f*cking lame. Just being honest. I really like the song, but that video is almost unwatchable. I hope they didn't spend too much money on it. How much can a girl and a horse cost for a video? LOL :D
I think I'm more annoyed that these guys never seem to get good videos, despite a few exceptions the videos never do the songs justice which sucks I would love for someone with a completely approach come in and do something like an all animated video, Something unique that compliments the unique music, if they had a video with amazing and creative imagery people would actually share it with their friends and that means the music also gets exposed to a new audience.

Exactly they should try Adam Jones and Alex Grey to create a video like one of Tool.
who cares about producers, really? It's like being into a pro sports team, who cares about the coach? It's not like your one of the players, I don't even particularly care about the players as long as they can be successful. Sadly ITunes doesn't give a Digital Booklet for DE and KNY so I don't know who the producer was or anything. But I was listening to them talk about him, and if I had a producer he's who I would want. Just have your band go in a room, Jam out it while he records and tells you whats good and what to emphasize and get rid of, and then produce it until it passes the crisper test.
Coaches and Producers that are successful today had to start somewhere, this guy could be a hero someday, because he already produced my 2 favorite records. he's already A-1 approved.

Not really, when i was young deftones played on MTV everyday, I love the video deftones-be quiet and drive, the video is perfect in my view,
In that time the "proclaimed heavy metal superstars" said a lot of shit about the nu metal scene

Furthermore, I want the band to do what they want to do, if I was in a successful band I would want to go any direction that I could imagine. Just have fun, it's not like I would even want them to make some retarded concept album with Bob Ezrin. Deftones is a ghetto band, making ghetto music, in the spirit of black, soul, reggae, punk and real rock n roll. take em or leave em.

Regarding the not wanting to become mainstream thing from earlier I doubt it although they have never gone out of their way to become more mainstream at the same time they haven't shied away from mainstream success either. Also the producer has a huge affect on an album this would be come evident pretty fast if they used a really useless guy.

Shit i'm an idiot - just saw the previous posts. I was a little over excited there.
This might be their best video to date (or at least since Andrew Bennett's Hexagram).
I really hate the fact that he made a point of saying that he's basically not going to tell anyone what went on that day. He said he'd talk about the technical side. Like anyone gives a fuck? People want to know what the shoot was like and how it was to work with the band but he basically wrote a long message saying that he's choosing to keep that to himself. His choice but what is the point of that? And why tease people and make it seem like he was going to talk about shooting that video and then all of a sudden he says nope sorry, keeping that to myself. What a dick. This makes me not want to watch the video because I in no way want to support this guy now. In fact I want him to fail.

Oh, so this is the one they shot in Manchester? Why did they change their minds and use the horse one instead, only to release this anyway? I like it, simple but cool.
meanwhile...
