Title: Tour Rarities You Were Lucky Enough to Experience
Post by: Ponte506 on Nov 07, 2012, 01:57 AM
Something that's been on my mind today (and that will hopefully get our minds away from the agonizing wait for KNY) was how over the years, Deftones have played a very special, usually off the newly-released record song that they play during concert that usually doesn't surface again in future tours.  I'd love to hear some fond memories of that ONE song (or it could be a few ;) ) that you got the gift to see in concert that you just never hear them play anymore.

I remember in October 2010 (when Chino looked like he stepped out of a time-machine from 1998) they played "Prince" at George Mason...I was floored.  That song was one of my favorites off that album, and hearing Steph groove that sinister line during the verse live was incredible.  I don't think I've heard "Prince" on any recent set-lists which is a shame.

2004, Clutch Cargos, Pontiac, Michigan .. Deftones did Subliminal by the Suicidal Tendencies , I can recall to this day Chino saying "I wana see a big fucking circle in that pit! " ready?! "THEY'RE FUCKIN' WITH ME SUBLIMINALLY!!!  It was so intense..... Also the same night they played " If only tonight we could sleep" by the Cure.. Was phenomenal! During that song, I got felt up and hit on by a blonde girl who looked similar to an older Shirly Temple. Was a wild concert.. My first Deftones concert too!... PLUS! Dredg opened for them, they were soooo on point that night, made me fall in love with Dredg; no one at this time had any fucking idea who they were, just a few people who were into the music, but they put on a great show... By far the best Tones' concert I ever been to.

I know it's a shot in the dark, but do we have any fans here that have been to concerts in the Around the Fur era that got to hear Mx...and that song apparently wasn't as common as the rest of the album live.

If there's one song that I would love for them to play live, out of all the songs they haven't played in years...it's fucking Mx.

White Pony tour - August 2000 (Salt Lake City). It was my very first time seeing the Deftones, after really getting into them around the time ATF came out. I was a little young before that.

Anyway, the boys were playing 7 Words, killing it even though Chino apparently had a slight cold. My buddy said his voice sounded hoarse. Sounded pretty good to me.

Midway through the song, when the band cuts out and Chino does his thing, he grabbed the mic and acted like he was going to say "You don't know me..." But he didn't. He paused. Looked around. Then Stef started playing a very recognizable riff - it was Weezer's "Say It Ain't So." They played the entire song and completely killed it. One of the funnest songs I've ever heard live. If that makes any sense.

After finishing the song, Chino paused again. "You don't know me..." They finished 7 Words and sounded great. I was pleased. I've seen them 7 times since, but that was my favorite Deftones concert moment ever.

The end.

Damn, then I need to hone my youtube searching skills...or watch more bootlegs lol.

To be honest, on the Diamond Eyes tour I feel like "Lotion" was an awesome treat that they gave us; SO MUCH ENERGY...I don't think they played that song much after the late 90's, and it's almost neck and neck with "Be Quiet and Drive" as my all time favorite song (BQAD finishes ahead though).

Damn I've seen them over 10 times, probably leaving something out, but some highlights I remember...:

If Only Tonight We Could Sleep (2 or 3 times)
Damone
Lotion (more than once)
Boys Republic (2x I think)
Can't Even Breathe (in 04 I think??)
Minus Blindfold (seems rare now)

And I was outside of Trees while they played all of DE and they were playing it through the P.A. outside so technically This Place is Death, 976-Evil, etc... haha

Closing with Fireal (including the ending) at London Scala in 2006.

Tiny secret show. Their encore was Adrenaline track-by-track.
Whilst not my favourite DT record, it was pretty epic.

Chino was drunk on stage in Portland, OR in 2000.  He started throwing some unopened beer bottles into the crowd until someone from back stage came up and stopped him.  Chino said, "I forgot this was an all ages show, so if you are under 21, if you could just like regurgitate those beers, that would be helpful."

Saw them play the majority of "Riviere" at the Warfield in San Francisco not too long ago. :D

I thought it was "Death By Plane" at first and I was like "what the fuck? why are they playing a Team Sleep song?" and then I heard the lyrics, I was like "OH SHIT ITS RIVIERE!"

Lets see here: Damone and If Only Tonight We Could Sleep in one night. Right Brigade with HR of Bad Brains, 7 words with Say it Aint So by Weezer in the middle, All of Adrenaline minus end of fireal and fist. All of ATF including Damone, All of WP except full pink maggit and Boys Republic. Saw them tease Pink Maggit before playing change one night. Seeing Needles and pins and battle axe from ST and the singles of course. All of SNW minus Rapture, U U DD, Pink cellphone and Combat. Seeing all of DE except Royal, 976 and TPID. And finally just seeing Dai the Flu live finally. That shit was amazing and it took 9 shows before I saw it.

Man, I wish someone had a bootleg of that Tour when they played at The Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix Az. in 2000 with GlassJaw.  That was The Very Best Show I've ever been to in my life.

Sadly the closest I'll ever get to reliving that concert will be watching their performance in 1998 at the Celebrity Theatre :

Haven't been around in a while everyone! Good to be back.

Cool shit I've seen in my 41 Deftones show career:

- Boys Republic
- opening a show with Damone
- Street Carp live in NYC in 2000
- Chino stopping the show in Philly in 2000 in the middle of Lotion to let me on stage
- Pink Maggit actually being the intro to BQAD before it was recorded.

Those are standouts..still hoping to hear Combat live one of these days.

The opening credits of Entertain Me has an audio clip of Chino talking about the crowd and saying that he didn't want to say "This is the baddest shit ever!" and then go play another show and say the same thing to another crowd. It was at the Milwaukee show i was at on 11/11/2000. Taproot and Incubus opened. I bought the back to school t-shirt which is starting to look like hell but it will always be my favorite. I'd kill for the video or audio for that show. Still the favorite of all the shows I've seen.

they certainly did.  you could tell it wasn't planned (and it wasn't on the setlist), but as soon as they finished the final encore song (can't remember what they closed with), Chino and Frank stayed on the stage looking kind of lost (i wouldn't be surprised, Chino was FUCKED up that night...ha) as the roadies started packing gear.  all of the sudden, Chino is playing the notes to Pink Maggit and Frank kicked in with the beat.  it was a magical way to close a great show.    we got a LOT of good songs that night....   still remains my favorite Tones show ever.  if a copy of this truly does exist, would you mind letting me know if you run across it?  i would fucking nut myself if i heard that show again.  much love.

Only been to one show. It was the best night of my life. 4-14-11. Paramount in Seattle. Held chinos arm during the last mellow part of hexagram. Might not be a big deal to most people but I felt pretty lucky since it was my first time seeing them live and experiencing a huge crowd in the same trance as me was phenomenal. Words can't describe that night. Can't wait to go again.

The ULU gig in London was a rarity for me. Was great to see them play such a small show.

Saw 'em back in 97/98 but that wasn't as small as this show.

I'm sure they played Rickets at one of their shows at rock city, Nottingham back then but I can't find or remember their full setlists.

Anyone know the setlists for Oct 97 and Feb 98 at Rock City, Nottingham?

idunno how rare this is, but I saw them play Lhabia, Rickets, Kimdracula, Xerces and RatsRatsRats all in the same show. it was the last stop on the tour in Calgary. They were playing a sold out show at MacEwan Hall (about 1800 capacity) and they closed with Headup too.

You've heard the song live behind a wall, without chino's vocals. it's not scientific fact by any means, but if it is like fishwithbeavershoes says - that deftones is 50% Chino's vocals, then you have experienced half the song. and then we haven't even talked about you not being in the same room the song was played in. probably hard to make out any effetcs, details etc. it's still cool and all, but you know  :)

When i saw them in Oslo, November 28th, 2010, they were supposed to play "When Girls Telephone Boys", but they suddenly
changed their minds and decided to play Bloody Cape instead.
That was quite a surprise!

I have seen them 5 times.
Does BQAD in its entirety counts as a raritie?

I also heard Needles and Pins in 07 in San Diego and as far as i know it was the only time were they played it on that tour.

Some good memories :

- 1998: Chino jumps from 3m height on me and my friend. Legendary Will Haven opened that night.
- 2001: Chino sings Shove It right in front of me. He screams right at my fucking face and ears the whole song. Only show I ever saw front row.
- 2006 Paris: Adrenaline played entirely after regular set (show lasted for more than 2 hours). Place went nuts
- 2006 Luxembourg: Around the Fur entirely (second date at le Atelier)
- free show in Köln 2006 : waited 8 hours outside at the venue the get in. Made some friends in the waiting line and had an amazing time
- they played Rapture as world premiere on that free show (correct me if Im wrong)
- Antwerp 2010: they opened with Royal (rarity on that leg)
- the famous Amsterdam with Combat, Boys Republic. (had an amazing time with some hardcore SL members)
- Pukkelpop 09: First show with Vega on European soil.
- guest performances : Christian (Fear Factory) in Belgium, Max (Soulfly) in Luxembourg, Will Haven (at their last evening with Deftones in Brussels)
- opening bands : Will Haven, Animal as Leaders, Coheed and Cambria, Linkin Park, Taproot, Dagoba, Watcha... and more....
- one cancel : Pukkelpop 11 gig is cancelled due to strom disaster :(

and many more...  Berlin in a few days will be my  28th gig with tha boys !

Closing with Fireal (including the ending) at London Scala in 2006.

Tiny secret show. Their encore was Adrenaline track-by-track.
Whilst not my favourite DT record, it was pretty epic.

It was amazing. They played THE WHOLE OF ADRENALINE as an ENCORE. I remember them getting about 4-5 tracks in, and realizing that they were probably going to play the whole album.

Smoking pot with Stef  after Nottingham Rock city in 2010 was rarity for me. Stef brought his Ipod with loudspeakers and we had a party till 4 am He played TechN9ne mostly.lol. Drinking vodka with Team Sleep after London Mean Fiddler gig in 2005 was rarity for me too lol. God, I hate Smirnoff, but who would say 'no' to Chino.

I've been to only 5 shows and as I can remember:
Back in 2007 (México) they played Rickets, One Weak, The Boys Republic, No Ordinary Love... pretty special setlist as my first time seeing them live!
April 2010: First time ever playing the song 'Diamond Eyes', it wast just incredible, then Passenger Feat. Tim McIlrath from Rise Against.
April 2011: Before Elite Stef played the intro for 'Walk' by Pantera, and Chino started screaming "Res...pect, Walk! Are you talking to me??"
And during 7 Wrods, Chino did 'Fireworks' by Katy Perry during the break. Also on 2007, in the middle of ATF Chino was singing Sexy Back by J Timberlake.. sounded pretty good IMO.
Nov 2012, first time I've heard 'Riviere' live, during Maquinaria Fest Mexico..
Pretty good memories, the guys never disappoints me!
