It should come as little surprise that the Deftones have a new music video in production for their new single "Tempest". Director Christopher Mills (Modest Mouse, Interpol) has been tasked with directing the clip, which should begin airing in the coming weeks.
A digital single for the song itself is expected to arrive tomorrow, October 09th. The group will follow it with the November 13th release of their new album, "Koi No Yokan".

Looking forward to this for sure.

Probably. The only video of theirs I like is Bloody Cape.
Sextape is the best video yet. For all the wrong, non-artistic reasons.
Yeah, pretty much all of their videos suck. I'm of the opinion that most of the time, if not all the time, bands shouldn't be in their videos. Music videos should be like short films that fit the music. Why would I want to watch a band miming their songs in some random setting?

this tenfold. what an absolute waste of time with a video just showing a band playing. this is particulary noticeable in 'emo' bands or bands with very little artistic merit which seem to be an advertisement for how cool they think they look, equipped with perfectly crafted haircuts, and tight jeans
for the record though, change is my favourite deftones' vid

Hey hy... They did q video with break dancers.. So.. Crafty hair cuts tight jeans.. With Japanese title & influence?! Man we can expect anything!!
They just hardly got it right that's all apart from a few videos.
Bands appearing in videos sometimes works - Pantera's '5 Minutes Alone' for example.
YSTB and Minerva are pretty damn good videos.

Well done, good point.
Its very meaningless when they try to do find a concept for performing.
The song title is ''Hole in the earth'' yeah, lets put them on the space and shot while they playing the song.
Or the lyrics are ''Knives, razors, guns'' let girl put a knife into Chino's pocket.
This is lame.
If you wanna do music video while they are playing, just do it like ''digital bath, beauty school''
Or make it like Team Sleep - Ever video which is pretty acceptable.
But the best choice is 1 band member into a short-movie like music video.
Minerva and Change are great videos.

I'm gonna think optimistic about this video so i won't expect it to suck hard. it probably will suck though, but i'm hopeful it won't be hard. call me naive.
about bloody cape.. the second half of s/t is so dark, ominous and serious. so a girl walking a dog while the band looking at her isn't a good idea to this song i think
The low-tech/low-cost performance style video has a place, mainly when a band is first starting out and has no money/backing support from the label. Their first couple albums worth of videos are understandable because of this. I'll even give Change, Minerva, Diamond Eyes, and YSTB grades somewhere in the C to B range. They're OK but nothing that interesting. Honestly, the video that's come the closest to matching the vibe of the song is Sextape and it's not even that great of a video (the WP EPK stuff was decent though too). But thank god they had the foresight of not including their ugly mugs in that video.
I get that the band doesn't like to take themselves too seriously and just wants to have fun with their videos but damn, they're terrible at making videos.
All DE videos is pretty good. Definitely the best video album they have made! Just compare those with SNW, Hole in the earth and Mein, those sucked ass from a straw!

Ow dear lord, that video is horrible! Watching them play/perform (in a video) is always nice...but damn, the skyscrapers?! The bouncing cars?!?! And all those people seemingly having seizures (and call it dancing)?!?!?! Horrible! Hah, damn.

Yeah, and that's another thing. This band is way too old, fat, and ugly to be showing themselves in their videos. They are still making the best music around but their appearances don't really match their sound anymore. If you're going to try and use yourselves to advertise your music, you better hope that people will actually want to look at you.

I don't care about their appearance...so much so that I want them to appear in their videos as little as possible. I'm just saying, if you're going to try and advertise something by showing off your face, it should be good looking. The guys in this band look kind of haggard to say the least. I love them but they're not the young and dapper bucks they were in the Adrenaline/ATF-era.

i remember when so many reviews talked about how ending part of Diamond Eyes song was incredible.

poltergeist sounds so common and bland though, actually really lame. everybody knows that word. it would be cooler if they picked a specific poltergeist case like Lithobolia, bell witch or even the black monk of pontefract as a title. all these would be cooler as a title than poltergeist

Deftones Music Video for "Tempest" Nearing Completion
Tuesday, October 16, 2012 Posted by NolanMoreno at 1:01 PM
Deftones have shot the video for their first single off "Koi No Yokan" entitled "Tempest" and should be nearing completion (editing and all post-shooting production).
Christopher Mills (Modest Mouse, Interpol) was given the task of directing the shoot. We should be seeing a premiere very soon.
I heard the video for Tempest is going to be similar to Beastie Boys- Sabatoge
I heard Tempest video will be a sequel to the Hole in the earth video

Yeah those ones are good I also love Be quiet and drives video but the rest of them are nothing special doesn't mean they're bad there just not good,my opinion is their best videos are when they just show the band performing, there's nothing better to capture the energy of the song than to put the boys in a room with their instruments and let them go at it.
I used to think that most of their videos were meh but I like most of them now. It's just not possible to do their songs justice with music videos but they provide a nice backdrop. My favourites are BQAD, My Own Summer, Diamond Eyes and Hole in the Earth (come at me bro).
About the girl on Twitter... don't tell me all four of the Diamond Eyes music videos didn't have actresses like that, and they all turned out sweet.
I just hope they don't try make it like a mini movie its extremely hard to tell a good story in a music video but also as soon as they make a story video it takes away the mystery of the songs meaning the good thing about the deftones is they've always had mysterious ambiguous lyrics but as soon as you put a story of that it takes away that mystery.Basically saying this songs is about this

so when is this video likely to surface ? pre or post album release?
I would guess 2 weeks from now, week before release. have to edit it and all that jazz which takes a bit.

I bet that this video is a commercial for the next season of Bear Grylls Man Vs Wild (feat. Deftones).
this will be so meh. I mean really, playing in a forest? what's next, jamming on a cliff? their last decent video was back in 2003, bar Sextape maybe. same goes for their music as far as I'm concerned. sometimes I wish they hadn't changed so much, yet it's still my favorite band. :(

Swerve City should have been the street single
then Entombed as the main single, to get people geared for the album's sound.
Warner has been doing fuck-all to promote this album. No video, no radio, no magazine publicity, no vinyl. They went full tilt on DE, even after their bozo PRs let it leak three months early.
Luckily the reviews for KNY are all positive so they'll do the job.
I'm guessing Reprise counted on that and on the social networks' buzz to promote it, knowing they wouldn't have to spend a lot themselves.
DE was promoted through the roof, theres nothing out there for KNY besides word of mouth and stellar reviews. You'd think they'd have videos for Swerve City and Entombed on the way out now as well.

The "win a Stephen Carpenter Signature Guitar"- contest was the best they could have done. It spreaded like cancer on facebook, twitter etc. and on every fanbased deftones site and because ESP as a brand got promoted by this as well, it costs reprise nothing I guess.
Generally the video is out a few weeks before the single which is a few weeks before the album. It does surprise me that there isn't much publicity out there for this. I don't feel the 'buzz' around this album as much as I had felt it for the previous albums. Maybe the label thinks that the band doesn't need the promo for it.

s/t--------------snw. era between these two. the band just had a dark feel to it which is what i always liked + chino was doing team sleep, unfinished ts album leaked, then the official was released, 3 albums worth of ts demos, then snw was released and its probably my favorite, then to finish it off we get the snw demos ....... good times
I guess part of why DE was promoted so much was because it had leaked 3 months early and they wanted to save the sales.

Yeah maybe i'm not sure though it was filmed in a forest setting doesn't seem like it would relate to a city being hit by a hurricane

maybe the phisical copy was totally ripped off by the fucking sandy, nooooo!!! :(
Maybe they just didn't like how it came out and decided to scrap it. Music videos are far from practical these days anyway. Expensive and they barely serve as promotional material anymore unless you actually go look it up on YouTube. They're a waste of money in todays music business.
this sucks, i really want to see a video for swerve city or rosemary :(
Sorry if this has been addressed, but wasn't there suppose to be a "Tempest" video... or have I missed it? lol
bro, world ends in a month bro, no fucking point bro.
LOL so what you're saying is... You don't want a sweet ass Deftones video before the world ends?

I was speaking from their perspective.
Maybe they're releasing it on December 21st ;)
soo, there is not going to be videos for this album or what ?
I made and uploaded a "fan made" video for Rosemary but inmediatly i got a copyright notification and the video was blocked everywhere except in Caiman islands and other 2 islands LoL so i took it down because it was useless.

A huge part of northern new jersey, which is mostly woodland, was railed pretty hard by sandy too. I was out of power for two weeks, and there were a significant amount of houses with severe damage from trees being ripped out of their roots and smashing into them.
Ok so now we have a reason for why a video for Tempest wasn't released but it's almost a month since the albums release.
Where's the second single and a video to go along with it?
Watch the music video for Swerve City come out before Tempest
I had a chance to talk with Chino in the Deftones visit to Argentina last month. He said the video was recorded three weeks before that date (November 9) but it might not be released since he said "if it's not good, it might never coming out". Also he said "I don't know if I wanna do any videos for this whole record. I like that, I think is better to visaulize the music instead of having an image of some guy playing the guitar. It's fuckin' cheezy, you know".

Fair play.
I reckon they are all still traumatized from the HITE video ;)
bad, good, acceptable, fucking shitty, i dont care, i really want to see that video.
I want to see the video aswell but I would be stoked just to see some new pro-shot footage
do people want to see this because they think deftones do awesome videos and have high hopes for this one, or do people just want to get their hands on any deftones related stuff no matter what it is? no dount in my mind this video will suck. i'm more than fine with them burying this stuff deep into the ground
I know it'll be average but it's new Deftones material so I'm interested regardless, but I'd rather see some proshot live stuff sick of all the cell phone footage i want to hear how their sounding properly
Most of the videos for DE were very good. Even Sextape, as boring as it was, was beautiful. So yeah, if they're taking this promo stuff more seriously I'm curious to see new videos.
Albums been out a month and no lead off video. Must be shit.
I don't think the band want it released and if they do we'll see it around the 21st. I'd prefer them not doing any videos for this album and do a live DVD instead.
tbh, this song is too good for a lame performance video. it'd do better with something trippy like Sextape.
I hope it doesn't go the way of the Around the Fur video that was never released, which should be.
Really curious about this video, or any video for KNY. Anyone in touch, interviewing them, twittering them?
wouldn't mind and picture a video like Back to School was with the band in it (Chino then)....Chino waking up staring at the ceiling in a world where the world really does end later that night and he goes thru the day doing crazy shit like everyone KNOWS its gonna happen. "Lay there, Stare at the ceiling" as he ponders on what to do next and lastly!!!!! Any thoughts?

When is the first pro-shot footage likely to emerge? Are we going to have to wait until the spring?
Probably when they hit the festival circuit in Europe.
Jesus, is the Tempest Video fuckin EROS.................WTF!!!!

Deftones have a long history of making things and never releasing them. I would kind of prefer them not to release any music videos for this album.

yeah from bumble b, atf video, finger of death and eros.
I might be a minority on this, but I think Tempest is one of the top 5 songs on KNY. This song was a good choice for a single, can't wait for the video.

Well you're not alone.
I think that KNY doesn't need any music videos, at least i feel it would be better off without any.
Maybe an "artsy" video like the sextape video, but a video of the band just performing the song just doesn't feel right.
Hope the video would be good!
A while back I downloaded the videos from SNW and DE and was going to burn them onto a DVD, make a DVD label the same as the bsides dvd label and stick it into the CD side of the bsides case and then I'd have the complete Deftones DVD. Then I thought to myself, "hey wait for the KNY videos and include those as well! What an idea!"

I don't know... I would like a good non-performance video too but their history's not great it's so easy for artsy to turn to cheesey
At this point, I really don't even care for the video. I would think they would have released it as soon as the album came out for promotion. I guess not. At least the "Lyric" version on Youtube has a lot of views. :)
Yeah they missed their best period promotion wise but it might still get them some new sales though because it allows them to have their music on tv. I don't care about music videos that much but I'm always eager to see new Deftones material so I'm curious

Minerva is one of my favorite videos they've done; it was performance based though it visually matched up with the music quite well. I don't care what it is but having more deftones related content out there, in my opinion, is never a bad thing. Diamond Eyes did a fantastic job getting promotional content circulating and they've dropped the ball pretty hard with this album.
is this the real video?

no
Then why did Deftones post it?
nvm
of course it is, and it suckss :D
This video is so horrible, I can't even hate it
What?! This video is tits. Cheezy Asian influence, portraying a post apocalyptic world, with Mayan, Egyptians, and UFO Imagery.. BAD ASS! END OF THE WORLD MAAAAAN lol.. It's almost like Deftones planned this whole thing, because of this 12 21 12 shit..
Quote from: Vesanic on Dec 20, 2012, 11:33 PM...
Hopefully sarcasm was evident in my post? lol Yeah, I'd have to agree with you there, V. lol
I liked the idea of the video but I cringe when it says "turning in circles" and the guy starts walking in circles for like a whole minute.
thats the Chino Youtube account btw
You sure about that? Reminds me of the old movie clips they had playing on tour last year.
Unfortunately this is probably better than the actual video. I like it. Anyone know what movie the footage is from?
i'm Chino
That video is awesome.
im chongo

He shared the other video on twitter aswell so that's what the comment will be,It might actually be his account considering he shared both videos from that user ,Also in the title for that second video isn't that the Chinese calligraphy for Koi No Yokan?
Sergio just twatted this:

coming soon, the video to swerve city:

As long as it has dudes skating, other "alternative sports", and shows the band performing in the middle of a snowboard halve pipe while snowboarders do back flips over-head.Then fireworks and a shot of the band drinking Mountain Dew.Of course the whole time hookers, strippers and want-to-be actresses should be dancing around the band semi-naked.
It should also have cowbell.A LOT of cowbell.
Man I should direct music videos.

how dissapointing
The Tempest video has been scrapped. It's questionable whether the band will do any videos for this album. Sorry folks. Thems the breaks.
Says you. Why?
the song itself has been getting relatively significant airplay on the "alternative" rock station here in Calgary. That's not something that usually happens with Deftones
the band should clarify this
fuck this video
i haven't given a fuck for a while.
Greetings. I thought this information would be beneficial. I don't know what I'm allowed to say, based on what I signed, but I thought I should comment.
I was one of the extras for The Tempest video. I've been a Deftones fan for years, and as we were filming I found it unlikely it would ever make it to the screen. It was shot in a book store with lip syncing. I don't fault the cinematography itself or the direction, but it didn't feel like Deftones would ever realise it, unless it was part of a movie tie-in. If it ever does make it to the screen, I can't imagine the Deftones fan base enjoying it. All I can say is, I encourage others to make even better videos for Deftones tracks, and share them with the world.

I guess that he tries to say that the original idea for Tempest video was great on paper but it wasn't that great on video.... i guess
In a book store?... that sounds like "Have you seen the butcher" however i remember an image of Deftones playing in the woods and people said it was taken "on location"... wait a minute... books, woods? throw some teen vampires and werewolfs in there and it will make it big xD xD
yes, then that fucking shitty image of the forest doesn't make sense
i think he meant "release" not "realize."
regarding the book store/forest, many music videos feature multiple settings (rocket skates is an easy example).
