Preface: this is not a "troll" topic, or meant to cause flaming. As a lifelong, rabid Deftones this all comes from the heart, and I hope it inspires honest discussion.
It pains me to admit this, but over the past couple years, the Deftones have just become plain boring to me. They seem to have lost their mystique and intrigue. Their performances have become predictable and contrived. In the past (esp White Pony, ST, and even SNW days), every performance seemed like it could be their last. It appeared as though they were constantly teetering on the brink of disaster. But lately things appear more stable on stage. Perhaps even choreographed. The spontaneity is gone in my opinion. To me, all of the performances from 2009-current are nearly identical in terms of how they appear and sound. Same songs, same moves, same covers. Chino makes the same comments to the fans, takes his shirt off (wtf?), and does his signature barricade appearance night-in, night-out. The same can be said for the interviews, which have grown nearly pointless/unbearable to listen to or read b/c they say the same safe lines over and over, as if it's all scripted (wouldn't be surprised). And Sergio usually rambles like an idiot. Even the imagery is gone. The whole owl thing to me was just plain cheesy, especially when we found the stock photos. The new "deftones" font is wannabe-graphic-designer-trendy, and the Diamond Eyes booklet didn't even have any custom artwork or photos - just black background and white text. I know some might think that was a "design decision" but it looks budget to me. I'll never forget "Bandaged Love" from the ST booklet, and the personal photos from the band - they really grabbed you into the album. And as painful as SNW is, the art direction and imagery was fantastic.
So maybe I'm getting older, and I'm just less impressed? Or maybe Deftones have gotten older and they're no longer inspired? The guys are getting older, families have stabilized, less drugs/drama - all these seem like good things but to me, the stability creates a boring, uninspired artistic environment. Not trying to get cliche here with what inspires an artist, and what tortured lives they live, but frankly I miss my Deftones who were full of swagger, mystique, unpredictability, intrigue, and style. Honestly, I saw them over the summer, and it made me cringe - chino, a grown man, jumping around like 16 year old boy. It just looked silly. I think they need to age more gracefully. Chino should be producing albums left and right. All these bands coming up today grew up on the Deftones. He could be fabulous mentor and producer, and hopefully make some money off of it. I think the crosses stuff is a step in the right direction as well.
Anyways, I clearly got off-topic in my own post (embarassing!), but hopefully some of you lifer fans can relate - is the magic gone, perhaps a little bit?
I can say it's completely different. Just the magic is gone. Yes, the mysticism they perfectly portrayed in S/T is gone.
good post, got to agree
The shows back in the day were unpredictable because Chino mainly was never sober and today he is. The shows are more rehearsed now and tight due to being more focused and not partying as much. They've been playing some of the best shows of their lives at the moment because everything is good in the Deftones camp. In the past this wasn't always the case. Also, with a new bassist I'm sure the rest of the band are reluctant to be more spontaneous.
Anyway, these posts are the type of bullshit Chino was talking about. Like we the fans know what's best for the band. The past is the past, the shows will never be like they were back then so there is nothing we can do about it apart from move on...
Dude amen u said it mister, lol aint that tha truth
You're not getting older. The Deftones ARE
this is what you get from all bands that have migrated from small venues to playing arenas.the band and the crowd both get a personal atmosphere from small clubs, which is much more sincere especially from an upcoming band.
once a band is established, the majick will be gone. this happens time and time agaian with any successful band.

hahaha See this is the kind of shit that gets Chino riled up.
Good then ,and I will add chino stop dressing like your son dude and tell celeste stop looking at me like she was at the the memorial audi a year ago ,i would do her do kinda milfy ,i still lov the tones my fav band
yes the magic is gone i think. apart from the piece that there would be something embarrassing about chino when he's shows a lot of energy on stage - i agree on everything.(but if chino would cool down and just stand there on stage, he would get a lot of shit for that too, getting accused for being old and boring).but i guess what you say is what most fans feel, when comparing deftones years ago to deftones in present time. i think the trick is to compare deftones to no deftones at all. they got tired of the whole thing during snw and almost broke up, and moving on after chi wasn't something that was obvious so i think deftones in the way you describe it is still better than nothing. for me, i can take if the interviews are shit, predictable play lists, sergio etc, etc if they still make good records. but if the new record will be even more poppier than d.e, and they make more songs like sextape, rocket skates, beauty school, 976 evil etc i think it's better to quit it all.i like the song diamond eyes but am concerned about the cheesy melodies. i want them to want to make songs like royal, not make them just because they feel like they have to. good music is more important than the magic around the whole rock band circus thing but regarding the shows, it's not them living the rock n roll life which showed on stage before, just a normal day at the job nowadays. strictly routine
I don't know what this "magic" is you speak of. what I do know is that the band is a lot more focused these days and it makes them sound better. and they look healthier and happier, especially Chino. while I've enjoyed every Deftones album greatly so far, Diamond Eyes felt like they're getting back on track. these songs sound a lot more inspired and spontaneous than anything since White Pony. they might not be experimenting as much, but I don't mind because I think they were on top of that on WP and haven't really gotten much further since. and as for the live shows, they might not be as unpredictable, but when I see a band I highly enjoy I want them to sound good and look like they enjoy doing what they do. that can't really be said about Deftones between WP and DE. Chino was always drunk and only sounded good on a handful of shows, and often seemed uninterested in putting on a great show. now he sounds better than ever and seems focused on delivering.
i guess braineaters "no magic" is a little like vesanic's "no soul". it's not all about hitting high notes, it's about delivering a feeling about honesty straight from the heart. not just watching a pre-programed machine going off when pressing the play button
I agree with the budget part. I can't seem to like DE as I like their previous albums.

what are you getting at? the second video is much worse quality and it's hard to hear Chino. that doesn't mean he sings worse. in the vid from 2003 he constantly sounds exhausted. hear how he cuts screams short? so yeah, he does the squeels a bit better, but that's one of the few videos I've seen him do that. most of the time his squeels sound extremely forced and not very good.

I think some of you are depressed. Especially the person who writes an article about why he finds something boring
Surely it's just back round to getting Terry Date back in to produce and record?
As far as their live shows.... I personally think they're busting out some great performances (the ones I have seen anyway)

ok, but i think one should be taking in everything in life, both good things and sad things - and everything in between.. if you choose to only look at the good things and close your eyes for the bad things, them good things will lose their value. life's not about to closing your eyes and fool yourself. i think it's refreshing with something smart said that's not all flowers and rainbows. and there's a lot of dick sucking going on in other threads so why not balance it up now and then. it gets more interesting i believe

I agree with just about all of this. Still, they are better than a lot of the shit I hear these days. I don't know why, but for some reason I am thinking they will go back to the S/T type of music. If you look at their last four albums (including Eros despite not being released) they seem to alternate. S/T was rather experimental and dark. SNW was all over the place and a little poppier at times I'll admit it's not my favorite so maybe I'm a little biased but I can barely stand most of that album. Eros was described as being longer and more complex. Maybe even similar to S/T. Then DE was tight, concise, predictable etc. I just think they are going to take their time and make a great album. Maybe it's just wishful thinking though.
I agree that CHINO has lost a little edge in AGE. But to say Deftones has.... ummm, no. The band is tighter than anyone out there minus Chino being a perfect performer nowadays. I'm a thankful fan in that he's still relevant and making albums and performing regardless if he's a 29 yr old on coke giving it his all or not. Stop totally? ??? ??? ??? No fucking way.... too much talent there and these performances for his style (screaming) are naturally going to bog down over time and that's why they r evolving into something suitable for Chino to perform live. They r designed for live shows and don't b surprised if he sings more than screams even more so than on DE, for this next record! Thi nk abt it, listen to him try and perform most of DE live, its painful. I think he'll learn from that and your next record will b totally different. I think it will showcase the others this time. Just my opinion. Give the guy a little bit of slack or else u r going to b dissappointed. He's going on 40 w 25 + yrs of screechin, repeatedly! God bless them to keep on it and evolve their talent with their late capabilities man. :) Just don't go strings or "Radiohead" on us...... I will retire my hapiness w them THEN. p.s. even "Buffalo" being all heavy and near perfect has him mostly singing than screaming on the live version (even tho these aren't real lyrics, just sounds or mixed jibberish) but sounds fantastic qnd I'm aware it's from 2004ish. They can do this, obviously
I think Tony Hawk lost his magic as well.
So did Michael Jordan.
I think everyones getting a little too into this. The tones aren't gonna be the same band they were when they were younger. They have grown up a lot. There still going to produce records that are way better than your average rock band. There never going to make boring music. DE might not be everyones favorite but its not a flop. And they still kicked ass when I saw them last May. I've seen my fair share of awful tones shows. The last one was one of their best i've seen.

dude u dont get it we have nothing else to do, i m almost out of weed again, what up money 4:20
You could always watch porn instead
I think I may have briefly mentioned some of the OP's opinion before, but eh who cares about that.
You ever play a shit load of shows in a row? It sucks. It gets tiring. It gets boring. You almost enter a "dialog", same shit, different night. Your body moves the same way it did to the same song the previous night. You want to get in and get the fuck out. And I've never gone on a 3+ month tour. But that's me. I'm not them.
Touring pays their bills.
The merch they sell on the road also pays the bills.
That collectively puts food on the table, a roof over their heads, and clothes on their backs.
Record sales don't do much anymore.
Online merch doesn't really either.
So why call it quits? It's not like there's a musician's pension they can retire on. I don't recall ALL of them being millionaires. There's more behind the scenes of why some bands drag a dead horse around.
I'm not saying they should. The reactions, new fans, and ticket sales they've been getting say the end is far from close... then there's some of the few, that love the band for who they were.
We can some agree we dont even listen to deftones' CDs in a gooooood while.
I agree completely with your post Mr.musteatbrains

Damn everyone... They're only human... What do you want them to do to better satisfy your expectations of the band? Just be thankful they still have the drive to keep going... Perhaps, we shouldnt make such rash judgments untill the next future release.... Alot of shit has changed for them.
everyone who's opposed to the original post have lost their magic
Eh, does this not happen to all bands after a while? Times change, their life circumstances change, their inspiration shifts, they focus on different things, etc. Plus, yeah they are getting older. If you find them more or less boring now, then that really sucks, because I've actually only been listening to them for a few yrs, but they're still exciting to me, watching the old live performances as well as the new one. His voice was definitely better back then, but it's safe to say he's done a lotta stuff that fucks up his voice to the point where it'll never be as good as it was a decade ago. As for them losing their spontaneity, I agree with that, but I dont know, I look at the live videos, the recent ones, and there's still a lotta energy and excitement. So, I dont think they've lost their magic, but it really depends on what you see as their magic, because to me, they've changed, but it hasnt stopped them frm being one of my favorite bands. And really, let's not forget the ppl behind the music itself. The band members are all humans, so ask yourself if you'd have the same amount of spontaneity and everything after that long making music and just experiencing life in general.

i don't think people should be telling others to "go die" or whatever because they disagree, but i can see both sides. i just think that it is silly to think the band isn't going to change and get worse over time. especially when talking about music and how strenuous it is on a band, especially chino and his voice. i acknowledge that he doesn't sound as good as he used to or isn't as "spontaneous" on stage as some say. what stands out to me is pink pop 2003, you can hear chino's vocal chords just shredding. since then his screams haven't been the same. maybe i'm wrong. he, along with daryl palumbo (i don't know if he can't or won't scream) seem like they have been on the same path of not being able to scream as hard, more inhales blah blah blah.
all of that aside, i still love this band and i would hope most of all of you do too. they are just older.
Who said "die"? :-\ Anyways, yeah people should be able to discuss it both ways and we are but the words "plain boring" sounds like you're not happy with it at all. That said, I will still say find something else to enjoy somewhere else." Plain boring" isn't the same as getting old..... easy tiger, I even smiled :) And I'm disappointed with people spending hours here with something they find "plain boring". But who cares if I'm disappointed, I still like this band a lot. And I certainly don't want anyone to die over this, that's disappointing.
OP is incorrect. Album font is better. The photos are great. Live they are better than ever. I am right. You are wrong. Life changes. Magic is still there.

I listen to the Deftones every once in a while. When I first got into them I listened to them nonstop. Now, almost 5 years later, I listen to other things. I play the albums every once in a while and think "yeah, this album is awesome" and then I put it away and do the same thing 6 months later. Still looking forward to the new album and the tour for it. I saw them play twice on the DE tour and loved it. Sure they play the same songs, but it didn't change my experience seeing one of my all time favorite bands play.

in american idol, the finalists probably can sing shitty songs well and do it with a lot off passion, but still it's shitty songs so we don't like to hear or watch it.
so - it's not all about singing and dancing proberly. if a rock star singer performed, sang a cool song a little off key but owned the stage amyway and then peed on the judges - we would appreciate that rock n roll performance better than the other singers that hit all notes. to me the magic is in the latter example
I fucking love Neil Degrasse Tyson.
Look.. I said this in the other thread, too. Deftones hasn't lost anything. Chino's much healthier now, and he's getting older.. sure he's not taking his pants off and he's not fucked up on stage anymore.. But despite their loss in shock value, his voice has seriously gotten BETTER and although I was slightly disappointed with DE I was not at all pissed about it. I love that they're doing what they're doing based on where they are now. They've got the whole Chi thing going on now and that reflects onto DE. I bet the next album will fucking rock, just like every other one of their albums has in their own way, and honestly if you don't like it then live in the past. Not trying to flame but, what else are you going to do? Either progress with the band, or get stuck in time thinking about "a better era." I, for one, plan to progress.

Maybe it still depends on the show? I saw them earlier this year and thought they sounded better than the other times I saw them ('03, '05). I'm a huge fan of Diamond Eyes though, so that could've had some influence on it.
But fuck, you guys. I think Deftones are and will remain my favorite band for the forseeable future, but all this nitpicking is pretty melodramatic, not to mention futile. I mean there's nothing wrong with criticizing their shortcomings, but just think of what Metallica fans have been through with their once-good band, and appreciate that Deftones haven't devolved into fucking trash like that when you're gauging them as a whole.

You're entitled to your opinion. I just feel like things are a bit more special and exciting the first time around. Kinda like the first time you jerked off, or smoked some good crack. You just don't know how you, or ,in the case of the deftones, the audience is going to react. And if they love it it's all the more special.
Sorry for the fucked up grammar and/or punctuation. Couldn't quite figure out how to put that last part correctly.

true.
I think the deftones should only play material from their most recent album, or completely new material. They seem to have more exciting/passionate performances when they do.
in american idol, the finalists probably can sing shitty songs well and do it with a lot off passion, but still it's shitty songs so we don't like to hear or watch it.
so - it's not all about singing and dancing proberly. if a rock star singer performed, sang a cool song a little off key but owned the stage amyway and then peed on the judges - we would appreciate that rock n roll performance better than the other singers that hit all notes. to me the magic is in the latter example
I'm not sure if you are trying to disagree with me. I'm a little to girthy for you to be arguing with me.
honestly yes. It's the only thing I've looked forward to the past 5 or so times I've seen them.
Although when they change shit up I like it. Those 09 performances were quite badass. Especially Beware at pukklepop and WGTB at that South American show. I guess I just can't make my mind up.
the hottest girl in the world
i met her in a club many years ago and i could not take my eyes of her
she filled me up with adrenaline and i wanted to touch her fur
she was the hottest chick in place i died when i heared her moan
i was swinging to her rhythm swinging to her voice swinging to her every tone
and then she came up to me took me on a trip with her big white horse
and i sucked her breath and was falling in love to the hottest girl in the world
she left me in a club many years ago drugged out and despaired
i missed her voice so bad i could not take my thoughts from her
she was the hottest chick on earth and i would have died to hear her moan
i was missing her rhythm missing her voice missing her every tone
but then she came to me took me on a trip with her great hesparian death horse
and i sucked her breath addicted to the most hottest girl in the world
and since then every saturday night i am out with her to drown
in rhythms voices screamings moans guitar riffs scratches and sounds
i look into her her diamond eyes and my skin is blood soaked and pearled
you can never take away from me the hottest girl in the world

Gotcha V. Just felt misunderstood there and it happens through punching keys, man. I'm definetely not the pissed off type! lol I know that when Jane's Addiction dropped "Strays", it was just plain boring for me anymore and instead of trolling a forum and talking about it I just moved on. Was the most logical thing to do because I don't live under a rock with nothing else to turn to, that's all man. Sorry, shit happens guys. Didn't mean to be a dickhead.

We all love deftones no matter what and yes sometimes they make bad decisions that piss us off, but as Fans speak your mind don't be a pussy don't worship everything they do, speak up what u fucking like or dislike, to many pussy asses :o around here deftonesworld we need to do a clean up
how about we start with you. not everyone can agree with your post, so you resort to insults?
I know, what a boner if I'm a pussy. I'll eat your pussy. And then ask u wtf r u talking about - "deftonesworld we need to do a cleanup". That's enough from me here on this topic. Thank you, for letting me state my positive opinion deftonesworld. Didn't realize deftonesworld "does cleanups".
the hottest girl in the world pt 2
I asked her what her name was, she told me it was Beth
I said to her let's get out of here, you know this place is death
She made me feel so lucky just to be alive
and When we reached my car she said just be quiet and drive
I drove off in my street carp 100 miles per hour
I said to her ''hang on tight babe'' Beware! the fucking power!
Then from out of nowhere something ran across my path
And all at once the scene became a digital blood bath!
Beth got out of the car and walked up to the front
All of a sudden I heard her scream ''You stupid fucking cunt!''
I looked and realised, well it's just my luck of course
I had made roadkill of her hysperian death horse
I'll never forget that night when I heard those seven words
The night that she told me ''you killed my horse you stupid turd''
And then my passenger said to me ''you need to go back to school''
She told me it was so I could learn, how not to be a tool
And when we got back to my place we made a sextape as the night unfurled
and she sucked my cock and i was falling in love with the hottest girl in the world
And since then when I drive her home I'm much more careful of course
I'd crawl into a hole in the earth if I hit another horse
;)
we are such poets
someone needs to make a real song out of this
hehe :D - Bill Shakespeare would be proud.
And now for:
The Hottest Girl in The World Pt 3
Years later I asked if she'd come away with me
In cherry waves the ship sailed us out to sea
She asked me in which direction the ship I would steer
I said to her we're going to the boy's republic of korea
We sailed away to make a life in a new foreign land
She said to me ''we'll be ok, our life is in God's hands
She said to me, wer'e freaks, this is no ordinary love
She gave answers to my life, it was Rapture from above.
I asked her to marry me, she said ''Are you fireal''
Of course is what I said to her, now do we have a deal?
We had a litte baby boy, he was our little Prince.
Beth wanted to name the boy Damone, we settled on Vince.
I couldn't help but think lucky you on how life unfurled
I thought back to the club where I met the hottest girl in the world
And I often think back on how my life had found this course
It all began that night when I gave a deathblow to a horse
Come on Mothraw, your turn, don't let the story die!
i don`t think i could top this....
....end of story....
.sorry ;D

to crawl away from the discussion isn't very girthy? :)
Pleasure
Oh come on Mothraw! - you've let me down :'(
I couldn't just leave the story like that, here's how it really ends:
The Hottest Girl in the World Pt 4
Years later it began to dawn on me, our love was gone, all spent
Our marriage - an anniversary of an uninteresting event
Vince was now a teenager, old enough to drive
But the way he had turned out made me wish he wasn't alive
You see Vince had joined Beauty School he said it was what he must do
Rats!Rats!Rats!, how could it come to this, I wished he would dai (the flu)
Now it all made sense to me, his birthmark shaped like a cock
It made so dam angry , I just wanted to throw rocks
One day when that royal prick came home, I got so fucking pissed
Say it aint so he screamed as his face met with my fist
He cried so many tears his mascara began to streak
That's what you get, I said to him, for being a fucking freak
Oh why did I throw my life away, is this how it had to unfurl
that's what you get when you let your dick get sucked by the hottest girl in the world
And now I think of ways to Change my life from this course
Why did I have to go on a bender and hit a fucking horse?!

So you're homophobic?
Not at all - it's from a macho type unknown character's perspective who is.
If it offends anyone, well then it's your fault for taking a crappy poem seriously. ;)
I also have never run over a horse.
hey pinkmaggit
sorry for letting you down!
i really enjoyed reading your stuff and laughed a lot cuz that shit was the funny hell.
when i wrote verse 1 i just wanted to tell that for me deftones never get boring.
for me being a deftones fan is like being in a relationship with a girl.
over years every relationship has its ups and downs and there always comes the point when you think that this bitch really needs to shut the fuck up and calm down and to be nice like that day you met her and when you where falling in love.
well that is what i think.
you love the girl the girl loves you you bore the girl she bores you too.
the most of us are in a relationship with deftones for almost 15 years and in every relationship the lust and magic is gone for times.
but there are always the times when you see this magic coming back and you fall in love again.
the whole industry changed over the years and the internet took most of the mystique away.
so sorry again for me not ending the story
I appreciate the sentiments of the OP. It's uncomfortable to admit that a band so near and dear to our hearts could regress over time. However, I'd have to wholly disagree with the view that the band and their most recent material has waned emotionally and spiritually. There's been a noticeable progression concerning the band's sound as the years have passed. What once was purely aggressive and hostile has now evolved into something still relentlessly cathartic, but also introspective and curious.
Really, that's the beauty of Deftones. Music enthusiasts cannot pin them down because with each and every fresh release, another layer of the band's sound is exposed, confirming the notion that none of us can predict where Deftones will head next - we can only opt to tag along with open ears. For me, that's enough to pledge loyalty and give my utmost support.

amen.
Yesterday I read this thread and it had me thinking.
Maybe it also depends on where you started with Deftones.
For the very first time I listened to them when I was 14, so practically I grew up with them. And I just know for 110 % there will be never another band like them. They are my big love in regards of music.
I love their unique style and as mentioned before, you can't simply put them into categories. I even don't know what they are playing or what Chino is singing about but I just don't care.
Of course they changed, who hasn't?
And getting older and having a steady life you get your routine. Be it with waking up every day at the same time or drinking the same - you got me. It's normal and of course it's fucking boring. Sometimes I feel like I'm a part of Groundhog Day. So you have to try to break free from time to time.
And seriously, last year was the best Deftones concert I've ever been to (ok just the third one but who cares). But when I saw them this year on a festival they just played fucking routine and I still liked it but knew they could do much better.
After 11 years I still get lost into their tunes and I hate some of their songs with a freaking passion (I really detest Deftones because it sounds so disfunctional).
I just know that fucking everything gets boring within time - relationships, jobs, food - it's on you to change and not just live with boredom.
If Deftones seem boring to you, that's maybe the normal way it is - you just go on and maybe find another band which suits you better. It's a natural process, I think.
so, yeah - basically what I'm saying is that Deftones is simply great and I love them with all their mistakes and wonders...
