I've talked smack about this album before, but I find that I bump it in my car more than any of my other albums. It's actually a really good record. I still believe Beware should have been more like the live version (and called Beware the Water...just a better title), but: Hole in the Earth, Rapture, Cherry Waves, Konami Code, Xerces, Ratsx3, Combat, Kimdracula and Riviere are all really solid songs.
That's it.
I even like Mein. That must be a first on this board, right?

I would imagine and I'll even admit I like it...minus the chorus.
that's bizarre, because I was thinking the same thing this morning on my drive to work - how much i love this album despite all the hate. It reminds me a strange time in my life when this album fit perfectly in...also I think the band being in a really dark/strange place heavily contributed to the music in a very, very good way. I love the newer stuff of course, but somehow it all feels so clean and straight forward...I kind of miss the heavy murky feel surrounding their music.
I'd go as far to say that I think its my favorite deftones album. Cant decide between S/T, WP and SNW. I think all of the songs are great except for pink cellphone. Never understood why people hate on this album so much. I got into Deftones around the WP era, then S/T dropped and I was kind of dissapointed (I love the album now though), and when SNW came out that was exactly what I wanted to hear from the Deftones. Dark, experimental, hard etc. Plus, I think the artwork is great, I bought a vinyl sized picture of the cover off e-bay and want to enlarge it and put it behind some glass and on my wall. I just love that picture.
meh.. Mein is just doesn't work for me..
The only time I didn't like SNW was on it's first listen, it wasn't quite what I was expecting and threw me off a bit initially. However, by the second listen I already loved this album and continue to do so to this day.
Punkflop01 - you hit the nail on the head there - that's exactly how I feel, you described it very well.
I can imagine now why some people didn't like or don't like S/T as much as the other albums. It's not as melodious and as easy to grasp onto as WP and I'm sure many didn't or don't like it simply because they were expecting WP2. I had a friend who hated ST but a few years on I convinced him to give it another listen and surprise, surprise, without the expectation he loved it.
ST has always been my favourite album, I loved it from the beginning, more so than WP. I have to say I like SNW more that WP too. I love the sound and the feeling of both ST and SNW - they're both so dark and murky as punkflop put it. To me the songs flow really nicely and I even enjoy Pinkcellphone - I really don't think it's as bad as people say. I wouldn't remove it from the album if given the chance as I think it makes for a nice change of pace and adds a lot of interest. I actually really like that beat.I also love Mein and am not afraid to say so, given all the hate towards it.The drums are great in this track.Sure Serj's part is a bit pointless and stupid, it sounds like something he put together on the drive to the studio but other than that it's great.
What I find so wonderful is that for me Deftones have never put out a bad album.Let me put it this way rather - in my opinion Deftones have never released anything less than a truly great album.
I think they're the only band which I love every single one of their songs.Call me a fanboy or whatever but I just can't find fault with these guys. They seem to really stay true to themselves, making the music they want to make and you can hear it in the music.
ST and ATF are my joint favourite albums, SNW and Diamond Eyes are joint for third, WP comes in at 5th (although I love it, it just doesn't have the same darkness and moodiness as ST and SNW) and Adrenaline comes in at 6th.
SNW although maybe not THE best Deftones album is perfect - in the way it fits in with the rest of the band's work.
I wouldn't change anything about it or change it for anything!
I'll be the first to admit I've talked a fair deal of shit on this album, but I have been listening to it a lot lately (in the car surprisingly too). I don't know what it is but the record as an entire piece works very well. I find myself liking more individual songs on their other records, but this record is one of the smoothest from start to finish.
I've always loved this Album and never understood why it was the "Black Sheep" of the discography. It has some of their best and imaginative songwriting on it. I like it better the Diamond Eyes.
Then again... me and this album have fucking history.
Love Saturday Night Wrist. It has more soul than Diamond Eyes. And I've said it many times, but Riviere is one of my all-time favorite tracks.

Nope. Anyone who doesn't like that album definitely hasn't given it much of a chance, it will come to them in time. I'm pretty hooked on Combat again at the moment.

i completely disagree, i think it's a brilliant album and definitely in my top 3 deftones records. i've loved it since the day it came out. it was the unorthodox step from S/T that i had been anticipating and craving.

i completely agree, we have far too many of these popping up.
maybe it's like this - if deftones release two more albums which would suck even harder than snw, snw will probably rise in rank. but if deftones release two more albums which are great, snw will be even worse in people's eyes than it is now i think
could have been better if it wasn't for crappy production (hole, beware, rapture)

Doubt it bro. S/T took a while to grow on most people if I'm not mistaken, I believe this is doing the same just it's taken a little longer. This album kills Diamond Eyes in my opinion. I don't even see the problem with the production. It's like the bands take on a prog "epic" if you will, I love that.
Can't wait till the next record drops and we all go back to praising DE. ;)
i still love DE but SNW pwns it. i was never a hater of either record though. adrenaline is the only deftones record that i just feel meh about.

Probably my least favorite Deftones album (especially vocally), but I really love Beware, Cherry Waves, Xerces, Combat and Rivière.
Mein will always be the worst thing they've ever done...along with Rats. Fuck, I hate those songs.
I listen to this album more than Diamond Eyes, the songs are original and possess the ambience that attracts the listener. Chino's vocals just add to the enjoyment of listening to the whole record. Songs that stand out:
Kim Dracula, Rapture, Cherry Waves, Mein, Xerces, Combat, Riviere, Beware and Hole in the Earth. Rats!rats!rats! is heavy but doesn't define the true essence of the album and for the instrumental, its nice slow jam and I wont rate pink cellphone.
In other words, I can never get bored of listening to this record over and over. Despite Stephen's minimal efforts, Chino managed to channel his ideas with the help of Frank (who stands out on this album after Chino)

I love the vocal production on Mein plus its such an original song. A nice mix of deftones with a hint of punk. I keep listening to it but can't find any flaws in it. Rats! has poor lyrics and the chorus breakdowns just annoy me ( you can thank Shaun Lopez for that lol )

From what I have gathered from interviews, Stephen came in last into the writing process and I know very well Moreno walked all over Saturday Night Wrist but Steph had his golf addictions and decided to "kick back" on this record. Later on he stepped in, which was great because his songs stand out. Anyhow, great product! Maybe it needs to grow on some people

SNW is not my favorite album and its usually in the lower tier, but sometimes I prefer it over Adrenaline.
To me, its their most experimental album, also the most "spacey" one.
I agree that Mein shouldn't been the single, but i really like the drums on that song.
I find myself listening to the album every now and then. I think Beware is one of best songs of Deftones in my opinion, despite being a little repetitive.

not to mention when bsides & rarities came out i got a shitload of stickers... literally covered the whole interior of my car with them, upholstery and all... we called my car the 97 Buick Skylark Custom Deftones Edition haha
im still giving out the snw stickers... i honestly had a big ass stack... ups was dropping them off like once a week for like 2 months...
Has anyone still got the version of Beware that was on their myspace page before it changed to the final album version?
Would be interesting hearing that again, been a while!

It's ok not to be in love with diamond eyes. you can't create a record with emotional attachment in it, that's something that happens with time.
I remember feeling "oh well, deftones dissapointed me for a second time in a row" when I heard snw. on the third spin I fucking love the record. It's quite diverse, like S/T, but more colourful. With diamond eyes, they went straight to the point and came back to doing a Alt metal record.
I'm curious which will be deftones next step. it's my favourite band, and despite evolving (A LOT) it's the one that changed the less. Compare it with thrice, glassJAw or thursday where they sound did a 360 spin.

Seriously though, SNW is pretty good, Chino shouldnt have even attempted to write screams into the lyrics though, i'd say his vocals were most fucked on this album, probably due to his general state of health.
There is some interesting stuff in the ezrin demo's too that could have topped the album off.
Plus these are my jokes too...

I know a lot of people don't like Back to School but I think it works great on the album, especially on the very first listen.

While I feel SNW is their weakest release, it's got some killer songs on it; namely Kimdracula and Combat. Didn't much care for Mein and thought Rats was garbage, omg too much time hanging around cookiemonster/screamo bands obviously...
I think they absolutely picked the wrong songs as singles like usually, even on D/E, which I thought was a really good album. Thought Rocket skates and Diamond eyes were not strong songs like Prince, or Royal, CMND/CTRL.

i'm always surprised to hear that deftones songs and their albums can grow so much - the structure in the songs are quite simple in deftones music, so for me, that first impression i get lasts forever. absolutley loved s/t at first listen and still do, was beyond depressed when I heard snw the first time and still can't get into it, can't believe what's to grow. those strong emotions just don't change for me they stick. i'm fascinated by reading this though. i can think of several bands that write music you have to get into by a lot of listening, not just deftones, they lay their cards on the table face up i think (musically not lyrically :)

Same here. DE was the exception, except that the process was reversed. Loved it at first, then you know the story.
SNW is their best album for me, or it ties this title with the S\T.
I just can't understand how people can say that it's weak and then say that WP is their best. But ok, everyone have their own mind.
SNW has eveything you want to hear from Deftones. Slower songs where Chino hits freaking high notes - Kimdracula(ok, mid-tempo), Cherry Waves, Xerces.
Then again, heavy stuff - Rats!Rats!Rats(no doubt, heaviest thing they have ever done), Combat(have you ever heard so many screams as well as one of the highest notes hit in discography from Chino in one song? I guess no.), Rapture also is really intense and energetic effort.
There are Beware and Hole In The Earth, most known tracks from record, and if you call HITE a radio-hit, then you are completely kidding me, I think.
As for me SNW is the most focused Deftones offering, as it brings to our ears a really various kinds of tunes, that are getting together being one of the most solid albums of decade.

I think a real or OG Deftones fan is gonna have either Adrenaline or ATF at the top of their list... You can't beat perfect... The other albums are all great, but SNW is still the weakest, in my mind, the laziest; you can tell they didn't out their all into it.
D/E on the other hand, is a complete 180, I was very pleasantly surprised when I heard it, I thought it was gonna blow. You can tell they had their hearts in every aspect of the album all the way down to how Chino lost a billion pounds and got back into shape.

when chino hated his life in the snw era, he used a lot of meth. but amphetamines like that diminishes the need to eat. so.. how could he be so fat back then? ???
I've heard he actually stopped doing drugs before the SNW era and that when you quit doing drugs, some kind of physical reaction gets you fat... I'm not well informed at all though.
you're right,it seems he was using speed for about 2 years, approximately 2003,2004 and quit in 2005.
used speed during the making of snw, not after.(they began with snw in early 2004)
from an interview in 2006,speaking about speed:
''I never needed any rehabilitation or anything, I just decided never to do it again. It's been a year now and looking back at those times none of them were happy'
seems he stopped with that kind of dope in 2005.
but still, this is a pic from 2004 (about a year doing speed)
fat back then too, hell, he was also fat in 2003. just doesn't look like the average speed user?
This is actually from June 2003.
This is from September 2004
Deftones - If Only Tonight We Could Sleep (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPSX1BdHstE#)
ok.. it says 2004 from the youtube clip i used
Deftones - Minerva - Live Rock am Ring (2004) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTL6y3LMTi4#)
but if anyone knows these kinds of things it's you
but in this interview http://areena.yle.fi/video/1314787566513 (http://areena.yle.fi/video/1314787566513)
chino says he can't remember anything from 2006 because of drugs. i'm guessing he's not talkbing about a little weed. maybe he was a junkie longer than he admitted in that other interview

Yeah, it's a mislabelling.
Deftones didn't play in Europe in 2004.
ok.. and he DOES seem a little thinner in the cure clip 2004, if you compare him to 2003 and 2006, maybe the meth worked after all. not junkie-thin but still :) what's confusing though, is that he in 2006 says that he quit in 2005, and now he says he can't remember a thing from 2006 because of drugs. maybe he was doing drugs longer than he admitts or it's just that he can't remember years at all. but he did remember the cocaine year 2000 in the interview but not 2006, weird. in the yle-interview he speaks of 2006 like a meth year.
i would go as far as saying, what chino moreno says - is a lousy source
Quotewhen chino hated his life in the snw era, he used a lot of meth.
I don't believe I got that memo. Wow what a moron.
This kind of dirt makes me respect him as a person a little less. Next to running around on the mother of his kids...
Oh well, he's still Chino though, can't take away from his art.
I know a few people who take speed but they're also alcoholics and they're on the husky side. Was Chino still drinking loads then too?
SNW is wayyyy better than Diamond Eyes.
Love the 3 posts before mine!
SNW>diamond eyes
i think if you took what's good off diamond eyes and mashed it in with what works on SNW you'd have a deftones release to rival some of their earlier stuff, as it stands they are both inferior to the past releases individually.
Not that i dislike either of them though, I think i've accepted that deftones have changed
I'd probably say White pony and Around the fur are the best albums, followed by S/T, SNW, Adrenaline, Diamong Eyes.
There have been times where S/T was my favourite and Adrenaline was my favourite. Overall though, prob what I said above.

hmm... no.
Oh boy what have i done. :D
Anyway i just like DEyes more.
SNW is my 2nd fav album if I had to rate. The one that took the longest to get as well.... :) I fucking love this record, especially Combat and Rapture. Seems people don't generally like Rapture or SNW at all for some odd reason . To each his own. I just had Riviere played at my wedding 2 weeks ago, not fitting but very beautiful. My mom in her 50's even asked me who it was. Pretty cool shit, I thought. I even felt a little proud, ;D

I even like Mein. That must be a first on this board, right?
Nope. Anyone who doesn't like that album definitely hasn't given it much of a chance, it will come to them in time. I'm pretty hooked on Combat again at the moment.
u r right, there are several people on this very page that I've heard bashing this record. Not bitching, just simply saying that u r right about giving it a chance or two and it most definately will catch up to u!
I wonder what "Saturday Night Wrist" would have been like had they worked with Ken Andrews :o

Chino lost a billion pounds and got back into shape.
when chino hated his life in the snw era, he used a lot of meth. but amphetamines like that diminishes the need to eat. so.. how could he be so fat back then? ???
I think he substitute the drugs with weed? whole lot of weed and pizza
SNW are still, least favorite to me. I hate Beware and Mein

The best version of beware i ever heard was the first time it was played live before SNW was released, no cricket noises, less synth and less clean sounding guitar, dont know if this version is still about

:-\ Boy, did Chino really fall far from where he was fast around the time of this? To see him the last few years performing is astonishing, looking back at this!

chino was pretty bad here vocally, i remember all the live vids of this era being pretty shocking in that respect, i would almost expect to hear chino fucking up.
However this version gave me real high hopes for the studio version of beware but i was really dissapointed by the end product, which seemed over produced and not half as dark as this live version, i mean just listen to the guitar tone at the start of that live performance, i love it
