Title: Instrumental Album?
Post by: Rxx on Dec 16, 2010, 02:44 PM
What if the Tones made a purely instrumental album? I think I read somewhere that Steph wanted to create one sometime.. I think it would sound awesome, they could explore all their potential to dig atmospheres.

deftones without chino's vocals? no thanks  8)

probably depends on why you love deftones.

for me it's steph's heavy guitar + chinos singing = deftones.
to remove any of them elements will make it fall flat i think. didn't see select start on any top three lists here, not even on snw top 3's. thought no one cared about a track like that so why wish for more. i like it okay, but you know... it's not what excistes me the most about them.

their basic structure is often very simple so much is up to chino. and unfortunately i don't think they're good enough musicians to make it to a good enough level for an entire disc, to keep an entire album interesting without chino's voice as an instrument . there are bands like russian circles who does it better i think

I would never like that they would make such an album, but I would still buy it to have it in my collection. good or not.

i dunno, good question. if i heard it i'd definitely know it was good. actually bothering to listen to something with no vocals not knowing who made the song would be the problem. i'm not big on listening to instrumental stuff, unless it's cky or deftones, or TS. i'm sure i'd enjoy tons of other instrumental bands and songs, but i just don't have the patience or the will to find it

I think an EP of instrumental would be cool, but having to wait four years for just an instrumental album would be a little disappointing.

Yes, An Ep would be enough. I know this will be controversial, but The snw demos were instrumental and weren't that entertaining. Yeah, I know they weren't thought as instrumental songs at all, but you can see there ain't much going on. I truly believe that they are genius, but they do less than they are capable of because of being lazy/not having enough time to explore themselves/not recording everything they do. Hell, even u, u, d,d was about to be forgotten.

That would be cool, and I definetly would buy it and probably like. But it would kinda suck not hearing any singing froim Chino. I  treat the Ezrin demos like an instrumental album, I basically like all the tunes and its an interesting listen if youre a big fan. But as someone earlier asked, if I didnt know it was Deftones I would probably never have the patience to listen to it and let it grow on me.

I was wondering, i've seen you call yourself a "diehard" and even a"super diehard" here and there, and as i understand you base that on that you've listened to deftones for a long time?  but i also read that you've seen them live only once? it's like as if I'd call myself a "ladies man who looooves women" but all i do is to sit and jerk off to nude women in a porn magazine? if i used that title one would think i go to bed with a real women once in a while`?

I have no 100% idea of what you need to do to call yourself a die hard, but deftones are known for their live performances, kind of big part of them
and to check deftones out on youtube is not the same thing. I thought one would have a bit of stalker characteristics to earn that title? but like i said, i don't know, so i ask  :)

i've seen them live 4 times. tried to see them a few other times but they fell through. and i was a diehard deftones fan waaaaaay before youtube. i barely knew what they looked like the first 2 years i was a fan,95 96, besides the 7 words video and a tiny pic of chino in the adrenaline booklet. no internet till 2000. i have been a fan a long time, but that's not what makes me a diehard. i'm sure there's people just as passionate about their music as me who've only been fans a few years or less, the fact that i became a fan in 95 doesn't make me more diehard than anyone else

and i don't think there's certain goals or criteria you have to meet to be diehard, you just know it in your heart. like any diehard, sports fan, they just bleed that teams colors even if they've been to few or no games. it's about passion mostly

i do think there should be some criteria, i just dont know what. if you call yourself a diehard for a team then your're also a supporter. and to not even support one's team enough to pay a ticket or be there to sheer that teams name at a game, then something is wrong with the name diehard.

just not anybody can call themself a diehard. if there aren't any critiera, there should be

Definitely not for a whole album. Chino's voice is just too good not to use.

A mini-EP or a song or two on a full length would be cool though. I'd be especially interested in a Frank solo instrumental (or at least something built around his textures and then the rest of the band comes in), perhaps as an intro for their next one.

Konami Code is fucking awesome. One of those tracks that show you that they can definitely try their hand at different styles of music, and succeed.

Chino could try and use his vocals as an instrument. A la Mike Patton or Elizabeth Frasier of Cocteau Twins.

i disagree. i've never seen them. not once. i've literally never had a chance. the closest they've ever played is a 16 hour drive and i was homeless or crazy broke until about a year ago. i come from a rather low income family and i've been on my own (to no fault of mine) since i was 16. just because i haven't seen them doesn't make me not a diehard fan. i have 2 deftones tattoos, they've been my favorite band as long as i can remember, i listen to them every day, and anything deftones i can get my hands on, i have. if they played in montreal now i'd easily make the trip because my life has only recently gotten remotely comfortable. due to the circumstances of my life it was never an option before. i would NEVER pass up a chance to see them. they might as well have played in hong kong all those years. you don't have to tell me the live experience is part of being a fan, it's a dream of mine to see them live and so far it just hasn't happened. i've been a fan since ATF came out and i was about 11 at the time so travel was never really easy and being self sufficient since your teens leaves you with very little money to fly to concerts. some of us just don't have the option. life is bullshit. but yeah. you can be a diehard fan and not seen them live. i will die with that shit in my skin and i'll never regret it. anyway that wasn't related at all because i'm high and rambling. an instrumental album would be a-okay with me.

hmm, interesting question. I'd still like it, but i wouldn't listen to it alot. The fact that such a powerful instrumental was made by the same guys that made -i'm just taking a few random examples- 7 words, headup, korea and hexagram just makes it way more interesting.

pretty much the same here, it's a good little instrumental and it loops nicely, but it is so much better because its the deftones!

it also has deftones production values, which seem to eclipse other more straight up instrumental acts like god speed you/explosions in the sky etc.

I think Chino and Steph would really clash in the making of an instrumental record.  Seems like they would want to take it in different directions.

yeah i think your right there.

I agree that e.p. length is prob the max i cud stand without chino's voice.
How about like he sings on fist but over instrumental.  Also on the pre white pony era clip of the intro to pink maggit.  I love it when he does that stuff.
Its still only gonna work on a shorter record though.

I don't think they should make a solely instrumental record, however I think releasing their albums with a bonus disk of the instrumentals would be cool. You haven't heard White Pony until you've heard it with no vocals. Legit.

I really like the idea. Deftones have this way of really creating these soundscapes that you can get lost in and that really invoke strong moods and reactions.
I think a mini album of six or seven instrumental tracks of the quality of U,U,D,D ........ select, start , Tilde (the Xerces instrumental demo) and Team Sleep's formant would make for one beautiful album!
As long as it is inbetween albums and doesn't mean I have to wait an extra 3 years I'm very pro this idea! Of course Chino's singing is one of the fundemental parts of the Deftones and a part of what makes them so great and it just wouldn't be Deftones without him but I think that the guys are really skilled musicians who are often overlooked and not given enough credit. An instrumental album between proper albums would be a great way to showcase this and keep us occupied while waiting for a new full album.

Probably fantastic, but it is not better than with Chino's vocals. It is probably like saying Chino is the weakest link. Deftones ain't Deftones without Moreno. Still interesting though, gtta admit
