I mean you're on their fan site so you are more than an average fan.....of course we all dig the music....but what about them makes you a bigger fan than the people who listen to the music but don't bother coming to this site?
For me...i love so many different kinds of music and the Deftones cover so many genres with their sound...that is what drew me to them....I read Chino's top 13 album picks and only knew like 2 of the bands on it...so i went and found me the bands i never heard of just so i could see who inspires him (and to possibly find some new shit to listen to)
this past summer was the worst summer of my life and finding their music around the same time i had all this shit going on really helped me deal with it.....it gave me music to vent with......loud aggressive mother fucking rock n roll music!! (and I also love their mellower shit too, great for burning one and getting "lost in the music")
so...what is your love all about?
(I have only been a fan for about 6 months now...but i am definitely a fan for life.)

Probably cuz they never stop to amaze me in a fantastic way.
I started to listen to Deftones in their fat-era (Spring 2006, Pre SNW).
I saw them live a couple months later (June) and their they was, a couple of hardrocking fat whitetrash mexicans. AND I LOVED IT! and after that i was a die hard fan of them. I thought that SNW was the best record i ever had listened to when they released it. And then all went silent. Not a new record in 4 years, and i almost gave up on them. And then they released DE, I listened to it and a hour later Deftones was the best band in the world again. And i saw them live, and they were better than i ever could have imagined.
Thats why i love them, they improves themself the whole fucking time. Even though they disappears, they comed back even stronger with better music. You cant get bored on them like korn (Who was my favourite band for a long time before) who drops albums every 10 minutes.
1998
In elementary school you know how people are into Dinosaurs or collecting rocks and random educational shit like that? I was all into sharks and the whole Jaws, Sharktooth Necklace, Discovery Channel Shark Week kinda stuff was my deal. The TV specials on Sharks where people go in cages always made me wanna go in one of them. Everyone's really careful and shit when they're observing sharks too.
So when I'm checking out MuchMusic late at night I see this band that's not only making an unheard of heavy metal groove with this song that's already kicking in my adrenaline, but their rocking out on the top of these shark cages.
And just when you think the songs over, this dude dunks his head in the water and screams the chorus right at the shark.
I was like holy shit. Roy Scheider and Richard Dreyfuss got nothing on this dude.
that is a cool story, heh

but they never cease to amaze me!
i was just thinking of this yesterday; if someone asked this question on here, i wouldn't be able to stop talking.
it's unfortunate how much i love Deftones.
Vesanic, unfortunately I am unable to stop talking on this board today.
There were a few years when I was on here everyday. Analyzing lyrics to no end, getting riled up about getting Andrew Bennett to release his Deftones Documentary, and I think my favorite was when Beware The Water premiered at Taste of Chaos and there was this huge thread where everyone just guess out the lyrics to the whole thing. I think mine started with "You slide away then come out in the rain, you burrough but you won't wake up" lol
Here's another unnecessarily elaborate rant on why the Deftones are the best..
2000
Ever since I was 7 or 8 I listened to Metallica, Pantera, Primus, Nirvana, and the whole gammut of Metal and Grunge music. I was mostly used to seeing the TV specials where people would throw up the devil horns and just say things like "Check this out" "It's a smash hit" "This rocks" and then go "WOOO!"
This TV show called Farm Club was on and they were showcasing The Deftones by interviewing some industry peeps after a screening of that crazy ass art-film epk for White Pony. Serj from SOAD used the word "MELODIC" to describe the sound. It was the first time I heard someone use an intelligent kind of word to describe heavy music. There was this real atmosphere that the band had arrived at their prime and did so with a whole artistic style that broke off from the Korn and Staind crowd. I remember taping the show and then rewatching the video for Change (in the house of flies) a hundred times. These were the days before all that internet shit where you'd just sit on your floor putting tapes into VCRs or reading CD inserts next to a stereo all day.
I was also really into what DJ Lethal was doing for Limp Bizkit's sound but it's always been a one trick pony. The White Pony has a way of treading on and staying relevant thanks to the textured nuance of Frank Delgato. None of that "WHU WHUUU WIKKA WIKKA WHU" scratching bullshit. Sometimes I'll listen to Deftones songs I've heard a thousand times and pick up on some unique texture that Frank added to a song. He's extremely talented and made even moreso by his egoless approach to doing what's right for the song instead of looking for a window to make himself a celebrity within the context of the song.
I wanna also quickly compare two songs that were big at the time: Change by Deftones, and Nookie by Limp Bizkit
Nookie:
"Hey I think about the day my girlie came to play, now she stuck with my homie's that she fucked..."
Here's a song that's like 90% of the songs you hear on the radio. It's a loose story that's got it's own basic plot in a way.
When I listen to this song, I got to either picture this whole scenario of some broad cheating on Fred Durst, or I gotta imagine some broad who did it to me and that's essentially a big part of where it gets old. Who wants to dwell on that shit?
Change:
"I took you home, set you on the glass, I pulled off your wings, then I laughed"
Here's a song that unlike most songs, is abstract. I can't tell exactly what's going on. Maybe it's about sex. Maybe it's about drugs. Maybe it's about a hallucination. Or even about a sci-fi horror movie scenario. Who knows. All I know is that when I listen to the song my mind drifts along without getting bored of hearing the same simple story all the time. I'm much more into the song and the fact that Chino and the band have so much of their everything into it. But that being said, they are putting everything into a song and not into the story of the song. You know what I mean? Chino uses his voice like more of an instrument with lyrics that belong in the sonic space of the song, instead of just using the song as a template for him to make a cultural or highly opinionated statement and be an egomaniac. As fans I think we all stay loyal since he doesn't end up contradicting himself through his lyrics and that's why as long as there's the Deftones people will always shout "Chino! Chino! Chino!"
2003
This is the year that Metallica released Some Kind of Monster. St. Anger was a like the TV show Intervention only in music form Linkin Park released Meteora and Chester Bennington bitched to no end about wanting to feel something real and that he's not against lying to people to get what he wants and just wants to be left alone, but hey, but the record and sing along with his cynical bleeding heart. I'm pretty sure System Of A Down was probably singing about the War in Iraq at the time.
So amidst nothing but pure negativity, politics, and whining, I turn on the radio to hear something that's blowing my mind but I can't tell what it is until Chino's voice kicks in and in a song that packs a heavy punch, he's singing the purest message anyone has ever written in music "God bless you all, for the song you save us"
Lotta people just wanna bitch and complain on their albums. And Chino had a lot to complain about I'm sure. But despite making some kinda personal diary in his music, he's rocking out heavier than ever and sincerely saying THANKS FOR LISTENING. To this day that song is one of the best moments of a Deftones concert. It's peaceful and yet has a solid adrenaline punch, like a musical decapiter.

Nice! I'm glad to see all the love for the band.....they deserve much more recognition than they get, so it's nice to come here and hear from people who know what's up!
i just have to pay attention when deftones music is playing. i love it. i don't like when people try to talk to me when it's on, or talk and drown out the music. i'm always wondering why am i the only one in a trance when they're on? i don't want any small talk, stfu and let me hear it. i'm hooked
i also go in a trance, i make the stupidest 'out of it' face when i get into it and hate when they interrupt my trip.
the music
... und cheeno's hayr!!! sew hawt! :D
If i'd never heard of/ gotten addicted to them, more or less any one of their songs would be enough for me to check them out
First of all, bloody_liver, you could be a (good) music journalist, you sum it up more eloquently than most others I've ever spoken to/read/watched.
So many reasons why I love Deftones..
Rant 1
I first saw them on MTV2 late one night, Summer video, think it was right before White Pony came out in 2000. I remember sitting on my couch just kind of daydreaming, only half listening to the music on the TV, then all of a sudden I heard the riff for Summer and looked up. Living in a tiny place in Norway I wasn't exactly spoiled musicwise but was still quite heavily into music, and with friends used to arrange rock concerts. But this... This was different. I used to have a videotape in my VHS where i used to videotape cool music videos so I could listen to them repeatedly (Sad, I know) MTV2 only played metal one night a week, (late Friday night I think it was) so I was all prepared. I just sat and watched in awe throughout though and forgot to tape it, much to my dismay.. I bought Around the fur and Adrenaline right after and obviously WP when it came out. Saw them live in a small festival in Norway in 2001, which was funny at the time. Don't think that many people knew them, they played in the middle of the day to a small crowd who were there mostly waiting for Alanis Morissette who was gonna play next :) A lot of confused Norwegians and a very small pit, and I remember me and this Japanese guy with lots of facial tattoos dancing and kind of moshing and singing along, which not too many others did. Chino kept losing his trousers and sang a couple songs with his trousers by his ankles - and I don't think this show was very memorable for the band.. They played at Roskilde on this Scandinavian leg of the tour as well by the way, which is more wellknown obviously.
Rant 2
I think this is a band where you either get it or you don't. Not many people are kind of halfheartedly into Deftones I think. You're either fully in or not. I like their lyrics, poetic, abstract, atmospheric, creepy, different, sexual, dreaminducing, creative, fantasies, TIMELESS lyrics that never date, lyrics that even now after listening to their music for this many years, I am still able to rediscover their words and find new things. I love how their lyrics are abstract enough for them to mean something completely different to everybody. I know how much they mean to me.
Chino's voice – My favourite singer, even at his worst. Nobody can put me in a trance like he can, sonically. His voice gives me chills and I get a girlboner from it. It excites me, haunts me, enlightens me and gives me joy.
Frank – His atmospheric little additions to the music lifts it and takes me new places everytime. Words can't describe my joy when I met him in Nottingham and could finally tell him how much I appreciate his contributions to the music and how much I think Diamond Eyes is "his" album.
Deftones combined – You know how Lennon/McCartney never quite matched the synergy they created together as soloartists. The combination of personalities, talent, creativity, conflicts, the will they have to experiment and renew themselves and search further, reaching for new things instead of stagnating, that is part of the magic too. Also love how approachable and nice they are. For them to come outside and hang out with fans for hours repeatedly... I'll never forget this from London/Nottingham.
Songs/music – Again, timeless and doesn't age. Still now, after all this time, I can find new things about their music. They've been with me through everything in my life, ups and downs, and I know it's a cliché but they really are the soundtrack to my life. Their songs instantly take me to new or familiar places; there is a Deftones song for everything.
Chi – He was always my hero. How he spoke up for the weaker members of society inspired me and from this grew a respect and a love no other musician has matched, other than maybe John Lennon who was my first hero. It kind of helped in a way to know that he was so caring, since life was pretty bad for me back then. Look forward to having him back!!
And there's lots more too.

This ^
I still get chills from listening to their music.
To me this is the only band that puts absolutely everything into each album and won't just put any old crap on their albums, just for the sake of getting it out.
I'm amazed at how they keep putting out great album after great album.
Stef's riffs - I love the way he's always pushing boundaries, always going lower. To me noone else can drum like Abe
and of course Chino's voice - love the way it can go from being gentle and soothing to blood curdling screams like no other!!!!!!!
I find myself thinking about this band like ALL the time. Sitting in a class where I'm suppose to be concentrating but all I can think about is getting out of there so I can put my iPod on and listen to them. I feel like I have to do something to really prove to people how much this band have changed my life and continue to do so. I've just spent a shit load of money on seeing them in Los Angeles in June and I live here in Londonnnnnnn but I don't think that's enough yet
this is the 3rd time i try to response but i think the point of what i tried to say is
DEFTONES IS THE SOUNDTRACK OF MY LIFE
they are my favorite band since i´m 16
I love Deftones because they were my first "love". I was in 5th grade, listening to all types of heavy metal [Slipknot, Korn, SOAD, Marilyn Manson, Nirvana, etc]. You know, music that was on the "darker" side of the spectrum. Once I heard Deftones, I was able to realize that you can have heavy music be beautiful and intriguing at the same time. I was so into this bootleg VHS my brother got that had this interview with him where he talks about his influences. This got me to expand my musical ear into territories I didn't know existed; The Smiths, Depeche Mode, The Cure, etc. It's because of the Deftones that I was able to broaden my horizons to punk, new wave, shoegaze, dreampop, and MORE METAL. And as mothraw has stated, "DEFTONES IS THE SOUNDTRACK OF MY LIFE"
Also, them being my first [metal] concert (Palladium '00) was something that had me thirsty for more of that "live" experience that they give.
Dirty sonic tones and rhythmic style from steph combine with them haunting dynamic vocals from Camillo, and beat master fresh Cunningham with his unique rhythms a time signatures that bleed a taste of hip-hop hybrid hard rock rhythms along with the chest thumping swing and pop bass lines of our man chi.. And sergio is a very good chameleon at imitating his style too while add his own flavor to the mix. These are very broad reasons why i love this band.. So many elements strengthen my love and I think a big part of it is because their music has created many memories that i can recollect and take myself back to with their music and this band has just been a true inspiration in my life.
Shit what is there not to love!?
What made me a believer is they never cease to surprise me. A few years back (ok maybe like 12 or 13) I was going through a bad break up, my sound track was Around the Fur, since it was right before White Pony dropped. So I'm chilling, you know just taking everything in, and MX ends and that long as silence begins. Well I never knew that shit was hiding Damone. I started drifting off and BAM fucking Damone starts in. I wake up and I'm like WTF is this!?! Fucking jammed out to it! It made perfect sense and fit what I was going through. White Pony drops and they tour in support, fuckers play Damone when I catch them on the support tour. Instant love for them.
2nd sap story, SNW comes out and I'm at odds end with a shit load of friends, Hole in the Earth anyone? Yep... I hate my friends too.
Anywho, long story short, they're writting music I can relate too. They're doing it with dynamics that make sense, pushing the "metal" envelope making it the BrOOtz yet still strangely sensual and personal at the same time. Totally pushing my understanding of agro shit making me explore the experimental.
because i cry while they performing "Sextape" in Jakarta. that's why i know i love them.

the fact that they're comfortable enough with their masculinity to sight Purple Rain as a major influence
I like Deftones cuz they make me hard down there.
There are so many things that make me love the Deftones, of course, #1 being that every album is a musical masterpiece in its own right, #2, all members of the band are amazingly talented musicians, who are all in it for the music baby, not the money and fame, they are fucking real, and in your face! ,
#3 every song is sick and EPIC, and just gives me tingles, when I listen to it, letting the lyrics touch deeply into my soul with Chino's voice! and #4
THE DEFTONES HAVE NEVER SOLD OUT AND BECOME MAINTSTREAM JUST TO BE PLAYED ON MAINSTREAM RADIO! they have stayed true to what they want to play and create awesome, rocking fucking music as artists and musicians, for their fans and themselves, they don't give a fuck if they make radio friendly music to make more money, the DEFTONES WILL NEVER SELL OUT! MUCH RESPECT TO THE DEFTONES! THE BEST BAND OF THE LAST DECADE! ;D
This new record has re-energized my admiration for the band, especially "This Place is Death". It broadens (in my mind) the bands' range in style. All the new news stories and interviews are unexpected and a huge bonus to what I personally thought we would never get after Chi's accident. I'm happy Sergio's place in the band today seem well received and accepted and the band knows this. They will now tour and write another album and hopefully continue to keep surprising us. Who else is doing this today?!?!?!?!? Come on, this is why I love this band more than I ever have. So what, times have changed and people are older so you don't get WP2 or ATF2. This shit is still sacred to me and most of us here and we wouldn't have thought that at the end of 2008 or early 2009. Hell, I wouldn't have thought they planned on writing soon for that matter! God bless Deftones and everyone here with an opened mind who doesn't act like they are management and criticize someone elses' opinion bc it could come back to bite your ass bc u don't know what's happenin next homie. That's what I love....

and what if they do get played on the radio? i mean seriously, who gives a shit
there just unique...everything they do is cool........as a matter of fact i think they should be included in the Big 4 concert
...Because their music appeals to my benign schizophrenia, in good ways bad ways and many in between
and the fact that they aren't super-mainstream, very much appeals to my (mostly) anti-sociality..
With all that said, their music actually helps me stay sane, for the most part...
...but maybe I shouldn't have posted all this in the first place (insert shifty-eyed paranoid smiley here: :-\ ...okay that's the closest thing, lol..)
...just being honest, if you don't like it that's your own problem
chino's voice, frank ambience, steph's heaviness and most importantly, the balance of melodic and aggression!
because i've never heard anything as mesmerizing, beautiful and at the same time creepy and scary as their songs. i've been a fan for seven years now and i haven't heard one Deftones song that i didn't like . Chino's voice is hands down the most amazing shit i have ever heard.

wow maybe I missed something here but it's never too late. This is where it's funny you always either say "not calling u a fanboy" or "fanboy!" and u step right to the interview immediately. I was 15 when I joined and am now 21. My posts from when I first joined probably have a different tone from what I post now just because I was new to the band and passionate about them. I still am, I'm just not as willing to get into arguments about it. Not calling anyone immature or anything, just giving my personal experience. What it distills down to is that everyone is passionate about this band. Some in different ways and to different extents than others.

This is where it's funny you always either say "not calling u a fanboy" or "fanboy!" and u step right to the interview immediately. A fanboy would know every detail about everything like u seem to and argue it till there's nothing left. Way to go, not calling YOU a fanboy or anything. i think that if you're a fanboy, you love everything they do without ever asking yourself if it's good, just automatically swallow everything and praise it to the sky no matter what.oh, chino boyband dancing in the mein video? - it looks sooo great such a talented artist.oh chino sings king kong get some?haha so funniez. oh chino is contradicting himself in interviews? it must be because of blablablabla some out of this world defend speech that has nothing to do with reality. constantly twisting stuff to something positive... if a song title is cool it's cool, but if it's dumb, then it's cool that it's dumb. if you like a song, it's great, but if it sounds shitty, then it's awesome to have balls to be shitty, or it's not a bad song it's just unorthodox and ahead of it's time "no one understands it like i do"and so forth.
a lot of stuff they do i
absolutely love, but i don't hesitate to say when i don't like something they do, and that's where i think i can't be called a fanboy. ordinary fan would work i guess.and knowledge about a band alone isn't fanboyism.depends on what it is you know though. some things people say they know or want to know can be creepy but that is more in the stalker slot i think. if there was a poll i think i would vote luisisch as the fanboy and slyartwork as the stalker, so i hope you don't think i feel your the worst one, because i definately don't :D

musings is just happy to draw you into another of their arguments
not following you.i might have talked about fanboys in another thread earlier on, but that thing was over and done.
now, we were chatting about mexicans, something he and northcal started, and all of the sudden he brought up the fanboy thing AGAIN.
which made me explain the definition of the word so there won't be any more confusion.that's right - HE drew ME back in.
Cheers, another episode of "Ridiculousness". ::) I admit... I GOT DRAGGED IN, LESSON LEARNED. To close Musings, I guess i mostly talk about what I like here and don't give enough insight to you on what I don't like. Never said I didn't like Mexicans by the way so that's covered.... I'm the type of person that doesn't bitch a lot I guess bc trust me there are many imperfections to this band but I LOVE THEM. Cheers to that, ehh ??? ???

New Album, New Tour........same old love!
bumping this shit for those who are newer to the site.
Sexy, diverse music. Incredibly unique.'Nuff said.
They excite me more than any other band i know of, goose pimples and all that jazz..... :)
Cool ass mofo's! And they mix every kind of sound i like and mould it into one!
Deftones write the music I don't have the talent to create. I swear sometimes they have found a way to pick my brain. Everytime I get an idea for a song I would write the same concept appears on the next album. It's seriously fucking weird. NO other band can contrast the light, dark, positive, negative, heavy, soft, (ect. you get the point) like this band. So dense yet so simple.....
Knife prty. That is why I love them.

Very similar to what I might say lol. I bought ATF in 98 when I was 14, and their style of heavy music with beautiful melodic moments was just fucking perfect. As I grew my musical taste started to change and it's like Deftones always wrote an album that was exactly what I wanted to hear at that time. There are even certain songs that grow on me years later. Rx Queen and Moana are examples of songs that I was not very fond at release, but have since become favorites. I love how they can build upon their sound and surprise you without completely abandoning their core vibe. The change feels natural I guess, and not forced. I feel like many bands go into the studio with a mindset of "our last album was heavy/slow/melodic/experimental/etc, now lets do any album that is this, this and that".

Know what you mean i can make up a cool riff on the spot but its combination of all their inputs that make a true deftones song, the lyrical style is also hard to write in i find if i sit down and try write some lyrics i just write the same old cliche stuff over and over but if i am up super late and am really tired i'll just feel like writing and i'll just write down lots of things even if it's just a line i think is cool or whether it's like a whole poem or song a lot of the time i don't even remember writing it, i think it's because my mind is really busy i am always thinking of something but when i am that state of mind i can think and write clearly i can't make myself write i just do it when i get the urge,i think that's where a lot of people go wrong they get a preconceived notion of what the albums going to be about rather just writing what they feel and you can tell their insincere.
What is it about Deftones that makes me love them? Ya, know I've been asking myself that for 15 years.. and to be honest. I don't have an answer. I just know that I absolutely love them. Something about them just musically turns me on.. Whether it's Stephen's hammering guitar riffs, Chino's lyrics/vocals, or Abe's drumming.. to Frank's soft eerie synths, or Chi/Vega's bass lines..
It all meshes together, and I feel that they are the perfect epitome of a rock band (at least of this generation). They started out as just friends jamming in a garage, writing music - and here they are 24+ years later STILL making amazing music. Most bands that have been around for this long, have either gotten worse, put out a band album here or there, band members come and gone, or would have simply called it quits. But Deftones have stuck it through, even in their "dark" days when they weren't getting along. They're a band of brothers that all "click" and they just have this incredible vibe/sound that they radiate with every album/song..
I just thoroughly enjoy what they do, and I hope the have many more albums to come. They show no signs of slowing down.
I love you CHI!!! Hope & Pray that you get better ASAP!!!
I love that they're not playing monotone riffs and raps the verses anymore.

there's rapping in that song? where? :o
and the guitars are pretty layered and melodic.
i think goon squads verse has a rappish nu metal vibe to it, but i'd like to call it rythmic singing. something that old school deftones have a lot of.poltergeist and goon squad have this in the verses, and therefore they have a old school vibe to them.judging by your post - it seemed your opinion was that there were no old elements on kny. but they haven't completely abandoned that style, and that makes me glad of course.also glad you enjoy old school stuff
His verse bits do have that old talk sing quality to it ,if you read the lyrics it sounds like a rap it sounds to me like a modern version of lotion when you look at the lyrics it sounds like Chino could be talking about the state of music all just guesses of course lol
everything!!!

I think 7 more is optimistic but we can hope!
A lot of things but especially that they always are trying to reinvent themselves and trying never to do the save album twice.
