Title: Meeting the Deftones
Post by: Radar on Jun 26, 2010, 07:31 PM
I'm finally going to be able to meet these guys on Sept 12 in PA!!!  I just wanted to know from people who have met them befor, how are these guys to there fans?   They seem great in there interviews.  Jerry Cantrell seemed like a great dude in his interviews and than when I met him he was a total dick. Kind of lost a lot for that him after that.  I just hope these guys actually are into the whole meet and greet thing.

The guys are fuckin' awesome. If they aren't you've caught them in a bad mood. But damn.. Stef is so awesome to hang out with alone, so meeting them all at once must be a trip.

Speaking of bad experiences, I met Munky from Korn and what a fuckin' asshole he was.

yeah it really depends on how they're feeling

I've only met Chino (very briefly), Sergio and Stef. Chino was in a hurry, but Sergio was the sweetest guy ever and he was talking to my friend and I for a long time at ULU. Met Stef before and especially after the ULU show and he hung out with random fans for 2 hours, talking and preaching haha. They both just seemed like really down to earth genuine guys who enjoyed meeting fans and signed anything anyone presented to them. My friend and I were the only ones going up to Sergio and we thanked him for playing and such. He seemed happy that we liked it and commented on it, and said nobody ever said that to him. Most people here have probably met them tons of times though.

From what I gather from others Chino ain't too into the whole meet nd greet shit, even though he does most interviews. Same goes for Frank to an extent (bit of a miserable bastard!)

But Stef sounds really cool if you like to smoke up and chill and chat about all sorts of shit for hours with a blunt and a few beers!

I think Abe is pretty chilled too if u catch him at the right time. Sergio sounds really cool too and he seems very genuine and nice in interviews etc., seems to have a lot of time for people...

I could be wrong, but maybe Chino just suffers from front man syndrome a bit!

I know, based on others' experiences and my own, it just varies on how "up to it" they feel, which is natural for anybody. I met them once before a show, when they seemed kind of preoccupied, and another time when they were super eager to talk. I'm wondering how your experience will be, since you technically paid for the meet-and-greet.

I couldn't see them ever being totally ice-cold to a fan, unless they were seriously annoyed.

from my experience Stef is the most talkative, then Abe(he's super nice), then Chino, cool when he was around but seemed busy, but still was friendly and seemed interested when he was around, and in dead last by a mile Frank, he didn't seem the slightest bit interested to meet any of us

I only asked them autographs, but they all seem very nice to me. Me and my man showed Sergio our support during the concert and he wrote "thanx" before his name on our cd. Nice guy. :)

I met them a couple years ago and they were all really cool. I was completely star struck but they were really nice and made me feel totally comfortable. I was practically fucking shaking when I walked up to chino and introduced myself and asked to take some pics with him, but he was so relaxed and down to earth that it just felt like talking to a friend that I already knew. That's what it was like with all of them, they were all just really nice and made all of us who were meeting them feel completely relaxed, I could see that chino could tell that I was really freaking out when I first met him lol, but he immediately made me feel totally at ease. Chi was especially nice as well, it was a real honor to meet him, especially considering his recent problems. He just seemed totally genuine and really appreciative of the fans. Hope all goes well for you man, I'm sure it will. Tell us all how it went and share your pics if you take any with them.

Ive met them all a few times, Chino aint the most chatty but certainly isnt rude. one time I got him to leave a voicemail on my friends phone and he said "Hey Gav, its Chino, I thought we were gonna hang next time I was in town?!" so he is quite a funny guy, Abe was really friendly but had his kids with him so was concentrating on them, Frank was a nice guy, Chi was a VERY nice guy, very humble and appreciative of the fans and about 3 years ago I was lucky enough to take Stef golfing, top guy, very chatty with some interesting theories on life!

i went to see their  show in amsterdam a year ago. i flew from poland with some friends and it was one of the best trips ive ever went on.  my first time in amsterdam, to see the deftones for the first time live after listening to them for 10 years. if that wasnt good enough a day before the concert im chilling with my friends in a coffee shop (bulldog) high as fuck and the next thing you know chino walks past us and goes into the gift shop.

i went after him all star struck and shit (hes my favorite vocalist of all time) he was buying some lighters or something and i told him i came to see his concert, bla bla bla and asked him if he wanted to smoke something. ofcourse he said no, that hes with his girlfriend, so i asked him if when hes done we can take a pic, he said sure. after a couple minutes chino walks out and he was actually looking for us and came to our table to talk for a couple mins. he was saying how his sisters husband i polish and that he has to visit and stuff. he was pretty cool, seemed appreciative. told him the music keeps getting better and better, took some pics. i actually asked him when diamond eyes was supposed to be out, and he said november 2009 or something LOL. then he went off with his girl.

i heard a lot of people say hes an ass hole but i was really surprised how cool he was to us. maybe its because we werent all on his dick like some fans probably are. one of the coolest things that ever happened to me.

I've met them 4 or 5 times...they're all really cool. Chino was Chino, ready to get it over and leave. But Stef and Abe are the best. I've sat and talked to Stef for over an hour about Nashville and golf, and Abe is just a doll. Chi was a sweetheart too,and Frank...meh...  The first time I met them I was super nervous, but when I would see them they would be back to back shows,so they would remember who I was.  Stef even talked to an old friend of mine on my phone. Great guys...love em.

I will get to meet them in Charlotte, NC. for the first time in September. I have been a fan for so long I am already trying to figure out what to say to my musical hero's.

This is a great thread. Thanks for all of you "lifers" who have had this experience for sharing. Really good stuff!

I've "met" them all quite a few times... its actually fairly easy if you are patient and dont mind looking like a groupie for a few hours... if you show up early to the venue (like hours before the show), you're bound to run into them going to and from the bus at some point..  every time ive talked to them, they've all been super cool to me... Chino signed my red WP vinyl, and when I handed it to him he paused and said "...this is a good record!", and back when Abe had his "Trust no bitch" sign up on his kit, my recently divorced friend asked Abe to sign it and he did & personalized it for him and got a good laugh out of it...

Its kinda cool that they are doing a legit meet & greet... it would be nice to get to hang out with them without having to wait forever or get bitched at by security... but $150 seems a little steep... I paid for the VIP treatment at the Puscifer show in Portland, OR last year and that was only $75 - and that included a front row seat, a meet & greet w/ Maynard and a private wine tasting...

I hope Deftones' management dont have guys hanging around trying to shoo away fans that might try and meet the band for free... oh well, if you've never met the band its worth $150 to get the meet & greet, a ticket , and a shirt and all that... the memories are well worth it... but you'd probably get more satisfaction out of it by waiting for them outside...

It's not that I want to destroy your sweet memory of the event, but all that stuff would be more suitable for Tom Jones or Barbra Streisand...

Come on, it's ROCK!  \m/   8)

I've met them a couple of times from 1997 to 2003 and it's clear to see a difference in acting a bit after they got bigger, which is kinda normal. With that I mean the excitement to talk about band stuff in the early days was waaaaay higher. I first met them in Oct 1997 and by then they were even excited I had something printed 'of the internet' which was very new at the time (hard to imagine kids). They were all nice, Frank was with them for the first time and I didn't know him back them but he was on my pics with the band. ATF wasn't even out so how would I know Frank haha. Anyway, Chino was just waking up so said nothing and looked sleepy on my pics.... Funny.

Second time was January 1998. That was a great. I was drawing a lot and drew every bandmember seperate and made some copies of those black and white pen drawing which I had given to a buddy before. That buddy's girlfriend was asked to come backstage by Chi's brother who was Chi's bass tech at the time but she insisted my buddy to come with here also. There he showed the band my drawings. I, still hanging out inside the venue afterwards, was asked to come with him right away while he came running to me. The band wanted to meet me cuz of the drawings. I came with him and met Chino, Chi and Stef. This was very cool. I had some rare pics from the internet with me they never saw and, my buddy recorded to oct 1997 show at the Melkweg and I made a sleeve for that CD which they really liked. That bootleg later came out as 'Around The Max'.

Anyway, then it was one of the first times they;ve ever seen a bootleg of one of their shows so they were pretty stoked. The artwork I made has some fish on it and here comes the best thing: Chino said, from now on you gonna be in charge of all the artwork (which was a little joke of course) and he said: FOR THE NEXT RECORD I WANT AN OWL ON THE COVER haha! REALLY. It became white pony 2 years later but okay...

Chi was very cool. He said to me in his exact words: I like you Sly, you are no punk....

I told this before but a year later I found out hey were selling a shirt with those actual drawings on it! They didn't contact me so in 2000 I confronted Stef when I met him. He said they tried to find me or whatever but I didnt care. IT was an honor. In 2000) I was invited into the tourbus by stef so he could see more of my drawings. After the show in Amsterdam 2000 I got some backstagepasses and I met them all again. Chino was a little drunk but supernice to me. I talked with him a while and Frank was pretty cool as well.

March 2001 I went to the aftershow again and hung out with all of them. They were playing music and Abe was dancing to Beat It from Michael Jackson. I could ask Chino some questions for my website at the time. Abe gave me his address so I could send a deftones pokemon design I made for his son.

June 2001, Waldrock. Famous show. During the show Chino recognized me during my own summer in the crowd. You can hear that on the bootleg. NICE.

Met all of them again at Download 2003. A friend borrowed me her All Acces pass for an hour so I went to find them and they were all chilling at there cabin backstage but were really cool. Stef took pics with my camera of me with all the other guys. Chino and Frank were hanging out together and both liked my new artwork (a band cartoon). Chi was again nice and said he thought I was a talented artist. how cool. But coolest thing was I hung out with Stef for half n hour and we talked about all kinds of stuff....

Met Abe one more time at Rock Am Ring 2003 too...

Sept 2003 was lucky enough to sing Headup with them onstage.

Then in 2007 was the last time I met one of them which was Stef. It was in Koln, Germany and Stef was, cool as he as, just coming out to talk to some fans near a backstage fence.....

I don't go to shows early too much anymore... must be my age (34 now) but I would want to meet them one more time properly, just to talk. I've been a fan for so long... When you get older you don't act like a fan to much anymore I think. I still think it's too bad they invite some girls who are front row instead of some die hard fans (like some SL ppl). I wish they would have a little SL meet n greet some more.

Anyways, I was lucky enough a couple of times, good memories.

Hope you guys like my stories.... Hope you all get to meet them once!

Nice stories.
I was there, thinking: lucky bastard;)

I have met them in 2006, was waiting for almost two hours and then Stephen came up to me and aid hi.
We talked about alot of stuff even about Axl Rose's failed plastic surgury.
Then he had an interview for the metalhammer mag. and he went inside.
After that I ran into Chi, he was really nice, but we didn't talked that long, he had to go inside.
And I also met Chino, but he was really shy and kind of in a hurry, so my friend tok a picture and I was not really holding him up.

In 2007 i sproke them again, but real short.
Back then they cancelled a couple of shows becouse Chino had a throat infection, so I asked him how he was doing.

Thats all.:)

The pokemon was all over Dutchdeftones.com years back... Abe liked it a lot cuz at the time it was hot and his kid loved the series.

It has a special meaning. I've been doing it loong. That drawing is really from 1998. I just modified it a bit.

I met Chino a couple times the first time it was just for a second and the other time was cool cos he was with team sleep at a small venue and after they all went to a bar and we all got to chill with him and the band and have some drinks. Later on after I left my friend got to go on the tour bus and check it out with Todd from T.S. (Todd is like for real the coolest dude i've ever met). The rest of the band met once. Abe is pretty hyper. Chi was just way normal (Like I wasn't star struck with him.... just seemed like a dude you'd chill with) Steph is beyond cool. With like two chicks and a blunt and still having time to talk to ya. frank was stand off a little. lol

Ooh...glad I found this forum and this post today.

Radar, xLhabiax, and Janie13: I'll be at the Croc Rock show on 9/12 too, w/ the meet & greet tix.

I was worried about the same thing. I'm more of an old school fan (Adrenaline is my fave) so I've got reservations about not being as familiar w/ their most recent stuff.

Sly, I loved reading your stories! I love art/design, so it's cool to hear. :)

Hey, Radar, I live in Shawnee, so we'll be headin' down from the same place. :)

I originally bought pre-sale PIT tix to the Camden show for Black Diamond Skye and then found out about this show. Planning on selling my tix to Camden as it's so far away from here. :( Wah. I was really hoping to go w/ a friend that also LOVES deftones, but my hubby reluctantly agreed to take me. :P I hope it will be remotely fun for him. He hates crowds, but is much more keen on the Allentown show than Camden. Before I bought the A'town tix, I said, well, since you're not a super fan, I'll just get one regular ticket and 1 VIP. Haha... but he was like, "no way, you are NOT meeting the band alone." ;) Whatever, I think it will still be fun!

So at these meet & greets do you actually get to hang out, or is it more of an autograph session and actually hanging out would happen if I'd just tried to meet them after for free? (which hubby would have never stuck around for, so VIP it is). How long do the meet & greets general last? Do you really get to smoke w/ them? Hubs would love that!

I'm old (31) and a 24/7 mommy of a 2 year old now, so getting to go to my first show post-kiddo is going to be a real treat and I figured I'd make it special with these tix!

to smoke with 'em (from experience) you have to ask stef first of all... i had talked to him online and then in person the night before so we kinda planned it out though, but tell him you have weed that's rolled up and shit already and if he's not golfing the next morning or some excuse then it should be aight...

seen them like 4 times this year and i never bothered asking to do it again, i'll just talk to them and get pics now so i dunno if they're still as laid back.. doesn't seem like it...

but yeah, good luck and have fun!

There was a meet and greet 'competition' for Optimus Alive in Lisbon.

It was supposed to be in the afternoon but due to flight problems it was delayed until after Deftones played (approx 2.45am).

This consisted of the winners standing in the enclosure just before Deftones private area with stuff to get to signed, etc. The band then came out and went round everyone taking photos, chatting and signing stuff.

I expect it would be something similar for the headline shows except it will more than likely be either before or after soundcheck sometime. Maybe it will include sitting in on the soundcheck ? Can't say 100% though.

Los Angeles people, I've got an extra ticket to Ventura's sold out show.  Shoot me a message.
