Anyone else remember that the on the self-titled tour, Chino had two microphones?
One kind of hanging from the other, the cords were taped together or something......he used them for diff. effects and also had some sort of little control station down behind his monitor amp.
He would kneel down behind the monitor and tweak the shit out of the delay and whatever else he had going on at the end of alot of the songs and the band would improvise some crazy crap w/frank going off as well...
It was FUCKING AWESOME. Prob. the best live show i've ever seen in my life.
I bring this up bcuz:
1.-this never happened before or again, as far as i can tell, and i can't find any vids from those shows, unless he only did it at the one i was at in philly (which is unlikely or else im lucky)
2.-no one else to my knowledge does that (or it's very rare)
3.-i never see this mentioned or discussed, unless it was a long time ago and i missed it...
4.-it was the shit. ANYBODY KNOW OF VIDEO OF THIS, or at least know what i'm talking about???
The only proof is the Hexagram video on the S/T epk, and ONE picture, on the DEFTONESWORLD Chino pictures section.....it's been driving me crazy, wish i could be at that show again...
Yep I know what you're talking about. I'm pretty sure he used a Line 6 DL-4 delay which is for the guitar. He just sent his mic into it and fucked about with it.

There's a bootleg of a Deftones show in Las Cruces, NM in 2003 where he used it a lot.

Yeah... I caught them like 6 or 7 times in '03 and he used them alot. He would kneel down during the breakdown of Around the fur and a few other songs and trip his voice out with all kinds of delay and modulation. It was pretty bad ass.
He also used the second mic with extra distortion on it for WGTB.

when the deftones headlined taste of chaos in 06 the first date or so, i think it was phoenix. theres a full bootleg of the show and chino has on a white jacket. he uses hella effects on his mic in that boot. i have it somewhere..
but im sure he mostly used it because his voice was jacked up in that timeframe. i know he always used it when they played needles&pins for the high "we are" shit in the chorus
and he added alot of distortions to his screams on elite and shit during that time too.
you see him tweaking his little effect pedals in the video

really? i remember his vocals being pretty great around that time, even without the effects but maybe i'm rose tinting it.......
i think he just did it for fun/experimentation purposes, plus trying to get closer to certain parts on the albums.
i think we've all seen/heard plenty of shows where the offstage techs fucked up the timing on his delay, or brought in fx at the wrong time like the vocoder part in some live versions of elite.
if you want to do something right, do it yourself, however, maybe it was to much to worry about to use it all the time.
Chino has always had delay onto his vocals live since Around The Fur days. When they started touring for S/T I think he wanted to have his own little delay box as well as the delay which the sound engineer used. It didn't sound THAT great which is prob why he doesn't use it anymore. I think without the house delay from the sound enginner, Chino's vocals would sound pretty shit live. His style of singing DEMANDS delay IMO and Chino knows this.
