There has been a lot of speculation lately about what is going on with the record: Eros for one, and Chi's parts, and this new record that we are currently tracking.
The songs recorded for Eros are very special to us as they are the latest with Chi (and we certainly hope not the last); they have history and significant meaning to us. However, as we neared completion on Eros, we realized that this record doesn't best encompass and represent who we are currently as people and as musicians. And although those songs will see the light of day at some point, we collectively made the decision that we needed to take a new approach, and with Chi's condition heavy on our minds while doing so. We needed to return to the studio to do what we felt was right artistically. Our inspiration and unity as a band is stronger than it has ever been before and we needed to channel that energy into our music, and deliver to our fans what you rightly deserve: the best Deftones record that we can make.
The decision to hold off on releasing Eros has no connection with Chi's condition or anything associated. This was, and is, purely a creative decision by the band to write, record, and deliver an amazing product. As a result we feel like this is the best record we've ever written. And although Chi is not playing bass with us, his presence is dramatically felt in our hearts and on our minds everyday when we step into that studio, and you will feel it in the music.
We have some dates coming up this summer as you know, and the best thing that we can do now is to try to return this situation to the closest thing to normalcy as possible. The stage is our home, and you are our family.
Please remember, only Deftones speak for Deftones, so we will continue to periodically release official statements.

Haha. Do you guys remember that update from chino maybe a year or two ago that had the itinerary for Deftones and Team Sleep? It was so well thought out such as not expecting new Team Sleep material until 2010 because before that would be spent on the new Deftones album then Deftones tour? I guess that day is over.
I don't approve of this at all and it sort of makes me ill to my stomache.
Well this sucks in a way, a NEW album before the NEW album WTF!!!!!! Well atleast after this "new" album, EROS will sure to be out after it, hopefully.....Damn idk if i should be pissed or happy! Oh well lets just hope Chi gets better.

It actually hurts me to read these updates. Whoever is writing them is making it seem as if they just don't care about the situation at hand, and that the music being created WITHOUT CHI is the BEST SHIT EVER. We've all grown up with the band and seem to care more about Chi's well being than the actual band does. Of course, I haven't talked to any of the band members. I can't read their minds. But this is sickening. When I saw Deftones at Bamboozle, I was in tears through half the set... This band has gotten me through some of the hardest times of my life, and Chi not being on stage was emotionally difficult for me.

They aren't gonna sit on their arses all day waiting for Chi to wake up. The situation is bad, we all know it's bad it's fucked but Chi wouldn't want the band just sitting around wasting their dollar on online poker. So they are writing an album with the Quicksand guy and will probably release that next year. And when Chi is all better again they will release the album where Chi is playing bass. Sounds ok to me. All you cunts are just too hard to please. Give up being a Deftones fan if it pisses you off that much...
I really hope they're not ditching the Chi version to cut him or his family out of his share of the profits... They should at least release those tracks to try and generate some income for his family.
Well, good thing they're at last stepping forward in adressing Chi's condition and making something relevant: a benefit concert. It took some time but it finally came, more power to 'em!
About the album: this is highly awkward and sometimes bizzarely worded...I don't think I'm that interested in an album without Chi, I watched some Bamboozie videos last night and frankly, it screams: "something/one is missing...big time!" Vega don't cut it for me sorry.
But then again, it might be the best decision for them...I don't know.
The unreasonable discontentment and anger on this board clearly shows ignorance and a lack of compassion for the Deftones. I am certain their decision was made with full regard to the current situation and I support their actions. Please, reconsider your irrational selfishness before you post an unnecessary response.

I find it odd that this is the first album where they essentially finished it, yet then decided to scrap it. The update says it wasn't Chi related, but really? Are the bass parts too hard for this new guy to do? Or could the lyrics be seen as unintentionally disrespectful to Chi now that he's in this condition? Or are they looking further ahead where a Chi-less Deftones band is a possibility and want to start getting used to a writing environment with the new guy?
I know we may seem selfish as fans, but we have hardly heard anything from the band since the accident. I believe they owed it to their fans earlier than this to let them know how they felt about everything. If we had more updates then maybe we could see how the band got to this decision. Instead we get an update once every 8 months. Maybe they're taking it very hard? I mean at this point it's not so much about the album but just rather how they have kept the fans updated with Chi. Yeah there is oneloveforchi which is great but it's not the band helped out with that. And if they did, we have no idea about their involvement. I'm typically okay with Deftones lack of updates when it comes to their music. I don't mind. But I feel like when it comes to something much more serious with Chi and the future of Deftones up in the air, I think the decision process should be more public.
Guys, I think you're missing the point here...They are indirectly saying that Eros kinda was not up to their standarts. If you are not proud with the art you came up with, then why release it? I think chi would agree with this too.
I don't think that EVERY eros song will be scrapped, my guess is that 3 or 4 tracks will make into the new record under a revised version. And I don't really think they will release any eros track that won't be on the new record after the new record(FYIHYD, Buffalo, "will also see the light of day", remember?). Deftones's Songs from the blackhole.
By the way, I wish they had done something to help chi sooner...I can understand how hard this situation is though.

As for not releasing Eros, I'm not really sure how I feel. I don't exactly understand why, but I will respect their decision. Here's one thing I do know though: Trust that my mindstate will never be "Fuck Deftones."

Although I am initially upset about this whole decision that the band has made to basically hide away Eros, and write a new album with some fill-in (no offense to Sergio) I do understand were they are coming from. Its their music they can do as they please. Like they have said it so pretentiously and selfishly in the past; "we do music for ourselves".
But one thing I just do not understand is why hype the shit out of Eros saying its gonna be their tightest record because of their relationship as friends is at the strongest point of their career and then proclaim "we realized that this record doesn't best encompass and represent who we are currently as people and as musicians".
But maybe with Chi temporarily out of the game for the time being, Deftones will be able to utilize this adversity as an influence to deliver a strong piece of musical art.

Well, I'm kinda lost for words. I never thought of them as some perfectionists who would work on a record for such a long time.It's weird that they will use as B-sides material that was meant to be released as a full length record. I have to admit though, that this is their work and they have the right to manage it any way they can. Also, it's funny that they mentioned this is their best record. I think they said that for S/T and SNW too :)

More power to the Deftones. If they feel this is historic (Eros) and they want to wait for the perfect moment to release it, I'm fine with that. That really means more Deftones music in the future. 1) Are they releasing as 'Deftones', because holding back Eros sounds like the different shit isnt to be considered a Deftones album, to me. In which case, is it going to be 'Chino/Stef/Frank/Abe with guest'?
2) What the fuck are you going to do when Eros is released afterwards, and is worse, even with a rework? See, I can see them wanting to record something a bit different now, almost like a side project, so that they aren't treading on Deftones/Chi, and yet Deftones' stock ain't looking so great after SNW. So if Eros is anything like the last album, I wouldn't be surprised if some new different music made Eros seem wank.
See, here's the thing: I don't trust the Deftones. They basicallly farted out their better albums, and when they start to overthink shit, it starts to go wrong. They most recently they took fucking years to make SNW. Yeah, precisely.
How do I put it? I don't trust their quality assessment. What they've recorded so far on Eros could very well be amazing. Then again, it could also be a direct progression from SNW's material, in which case I hope they get as far away from it as possible Still, as far as I'm concered, the band throwing material away and then focusing on different shit isn't necessarily the greatest idea: look what happened with the Ezrin demos, shit like Buffalo, stuff that was closer to S/T gone prog... and the final record that came to be. They threw great shit away in favour of crap, and I can't help but get the feeling that the band knew that SNW wasn't so hot in hindsight, but not WHY it wasn't.
I have absolutely no problem with them delaying the album or scrapping it entirely (whether for Chi or creativity's sake). I just don't want another one that's as bad as SNW, otherwise I'm gone. Given that the band's aspirations on the last album were to mix in Team Sleep, dilute their lyrics and song writing ability, put synths over EVERYTHING. up their accessibility, start doing instrumentals and try to sound like fucking Mogwai, things aren't smelling so rosy anymore. They can take as long as they want to. I don't care how long it's been. I don't want to be back here complaining like I did with the last album. That wouldn't be worth the wait.

Wrong again. He's an artist in the sense of the word "artist" (i.e. see talent), but he's not an artist in the fact that his work isn't known if it will sell or not. He's under a CONTRACT with the record company who pays for their services, regardless. He's not putting his art up in a gallery and just hoping. The band is under contract to produce so many albums throughout the duration of their contract. The problem here is the band will meet that quota, but they are shelving the album he plays on. So he has no choice in the matter and is not involved in the new album. He's not going to make the profits from the sell of the album and the resulting tour, because the band decided to move on without him after only 7-8 months. They should have released a 2-disc album, or released an album in the summer and then the fall. It's screwing the fans over who've been waiting for this album for 2 years and it's screwing Chi over because he will not see any profit from the album sales.
So, you're wrong. He should get paid for the work he did. Not to mention the fact that they are a platinum and gold selling band, so it's a known fact the album will sell and the reasonable expectation is there will be money made from those sales. So he worked for many months for basically nothing. He's not getting paid for his work.

The Deftones will mourn your loss, lol. Don't be dramatic, if you don't like their upcoming album, and they release a badass record after that, you're going to buy it, or at least listen to it. They'll make the record they want to make. They're obviously conscious of how they sound, so they're doing what they want to do, and that's that.

Many people have expressed a distaste for the Deftones continuing on without Chi, and how much it makes them feel sick to think about the 'Tones without him. I have Chi in my mind every day, every day, and I'm sure it's the same with a lot of people on this board. But that being said, another topic brought up in the update is them recording another album and pushing back Eros. It's not healthy to not allow people to talk about anything else but Chi's condition. If the push back of Eros, which arguably could have happened even despite of the recent tragic events involving Chi, makes people upset, I don't think it's wrong to discuss it here. Would it be wrong to discuss it in Chi's thread? Yes. But not here, it's relevant to the update.

Eros probably won't be ever released as a normal album, just as some b sides, I guess they just don't like it anymore. Anyway I would just like some new stuff, and I know people say "how can you say that when Chi is so ill", I appreciate that but to be fair, we've still gotta get on with our stuff, and seeing how they are continuing, they need to put some stuff out for us.
