I'm excited to hear what a new bass player does to the music, but fucking hell Chi wake up!
My thoughts:
The Chi situation is depressing. I mean, you watch him in interviews, and there's so much life there. Intelligence, humor, warmth. You watch him in shows, and there's so much energy and passion. I just want to see him back to how he should be.
The whole "we have too much material to choose what should be on Eros" dilemma is interesting. They can either put it all on one album, or they can release the stuff with Chi and the stuff with Sergio separately. So, that would mean release Eros as it was originally intended, and then the Sergio stuff as an EP or something. It's important that the material meshes.
they SHOULD release ALL of the material they've written. it would do chi's work on eros (pre-accident of course) great honor!
they should do a double album. i mean shit, it just needs to be mixed and mastered. or release two seperate records. or an EP.
SOMETHING. it would be a shame to let the music they recorded prior to the accident go to the trash bin. please dont fuck this up deftones...

You've said it. Don't thrash it, Deftones! Your's fans are praying!

YES! Eros will Kick ass, I'm pretty sure!
C'mon Chi! We Need YOU!
Nice reading, by the way. Thanks for posting this article buddy.
I misread the title as 'Savio Vega', ex WWF wrestler:

nice read, thanks
"Eros," initially due this spring but now pushed to a probable October release.''

Bringing Sergio in has kept us on our toes because it has led us to take a new look at songs that are sometimes 15 years old – and in some cases pick them apart and fix things now that we did wrong then."
well done sergio

So what does this mean then? That they're going to play old songs a bit differently live because Sergio has come along and made them sound "better"?
Having too many songs to choose from is definitely a good problem to have. I'd definitely like to hear it all. If not a double record, then maybe release two records in a year like System of a Down(although I didn't like the records, I thought it was a neato idea). Or that album/EP idea, with the best songs on the album and the leftover songs on the EP.
I do hope they keep the flow, the structure of the album in mind. They could mix songs from both sessions, as long as it seems to flow together. I thought their first three records flowed beautifully, but their last two didn't as much.
Reading 'its pretty heavy music' is very, very good news to me.

Pshh..that's what it sounds like. If that's what they're doing...KINDA fucked up
i had an impression that...EROS was done(or almost), before chi´s accident.
they should release the album like that...with chi´s work on it. period.
I think they said in the otherwise crappy Loveline 'interview' that Chi's accident lead them emotionally to do some more music, or something. Some songs might be about Chi. Of course, we won't know until this thing is released in fucking October(if it actually is released then).
If the Deftones don't sign with a major label when their contract is up, they could release albums on the internet the day they are done like Reznor is doing. Labels usually wait a few months when albums are done to get promos, videos, and concerts lined up. Album could be done next month and it would still be released at the end of the year.
Although, without major label pressure, this band may never get an album done...

I guess all they do is making a few new music and another touches (with sergio) to the whole album..
Thats not a bad thing..its good. But OCTOBER ?!... They gotta be kidding..
This record supposed to release at 2008..
@sam cassel, nice post noobie ;)

deftones are not a BIG band like NIN. Reznor has some power that deftones does not have.
NIN, radiohead, etc, can live like that. Because they have millions of fans...and full SOLD OUT shows with thousands of ppl.
The situation with Vega who would actually record and release something with them is weird.

True. They probably wouldn't do too well. I just hate that period of waiting when the album's done but the the label just sits on it.
rock_n_frost, whats wrong with my post? I'm sure people have done some crazier speculating on this site than I did.
i didnt know they were recording stuff with Vega. looks like he's their new bassist. writing new stuff. interesting. a double album would be great but the odds of Chino recording vocals for a double album are virtually 0
I wouldn't give Vega that much space, he should be there to fill in live, no more. This is unsettling.

i would have thought that too, but hearing he's recording stuff with them for the new album makes me think he's in. maybe just unofficial like frank was for years
I wouldn't go that far. A soon as Chi wakes up he's back in the band. Sergio is filling in for Chi and always will be. Obviously this Chi incident is going to make the rest of the band want to write more songs as it is a huge influence to them, life changing thing. But I don't think Abe worded it right in that interview. I can't see the band playing old songs differently live because Sergio came along and made them sound "better".
The new album will be a mixture of Chi and Sergio playing bass. I can't think of anything worse than releasing a double album worth of songs. Just release an album of the best songs you have written, no double album bullshit! That is what Chi WOULD want regarldess of who is playing bass.
well obviously if Chi ever gets back to the point where he can play again he's back in, no questions asked.
Right, Vega should be there just to fill in. I think, in a way, maybe it's ridiculous but he hasn't "earned" the right to become a real member or go as far as recording (an album with both bass player would be SO wrong), he hasn't paid his dues, Chi did, he's been there since the beginning. Of course, he would be cool with it, the guy is so good hearted but for the band, as an entity, after so many years, Chi's replacement as a recording member TOO is simply wrong just because one of the members is unable to play his part for the moment.
In my opinion, they should just go on the road with Vega, THAT is ok, play their ass off, raise some funds for their brother (they haven't done much so far, do something for God's sake!). Frankly, as much as I want to hear the new stuff, I don't think it's the right time for Eros, wether they release what they'd come up with Chi or the the additional stuff with Vega, the timing and situation is just not right. Time will be right for Eros when Chi will be at least able to walk and speak.
yea, i dont know if it's cool to have Vega on the album either. if they wanted to make new songs, & play bass themselves for some, that would seem more right than this. all in all, i have no real problem with them recording with him, it's just so soon. i'll still buy the album for sure, & i'm sure a lot of Chi's stuff will be there
and yea, they need to play some fund rasier shows, & see if maybe korn would do one with them, if not just headline their own
Ya'll gotta keep reality in mind. There's a chance that Chi might never wake up. So what are the Deftones supposed to do? Wait indefinitely and starve? Keep in mind that this band is their only source of income. It's not like they have normal jobs and then do Deftones as a hobby. They have bills too and need to continue working in order to support their families and in order to keep this band alive. If they just wait for Chi (for who knows how long), people could very well forget about the band and move on...
I think the whole thing is a sensitive issue and the tones are treating it respectfully and with honor to Cheng. It's not like they put themselves in this situation. They're making the best of it and we gotta support them.
yeah its a sensitive issue,my first opinion was they got on to fast since the accident.... but there is a chance he never wake up.... if he wakes up.... theres a chance he is not fully recovered.... if he is fully recovered he mabye not want to be in the band anymore and want to do something else more relaxed. he may not have the strength to tour around the world anymore. there are many reasons for them to continue. all this positive thinking/praying thing is good, but it cant get just get loose out of hand away into the clouds,if reality then burst that bubble - the fall will be harder.. im more for reality thoughts. i hope a person can be in reality and still be sensitive about it in some way
Comeo n people, this album had to released at 2008...
Chi is in a coma for 5 months..
What the hell is wrong with somebody else did the final touches (may be a few changes) on the bass parts of the album ?
They need to publish that album, its not hard to understand. You are thinking like they kicked Chi away..
You should thank to Sergio for doing that..
this is a really weird situation.
sergio...should just play the songs live.
all the album should be with chi´s work. like i read here..."looks like vega is the new bass player".

Chi material and now Vega material. Talk about clusterfuck. Come on, Tones, this isn't difficult: RELEASE ALL OF IT.

it's a new fucking deftones album
you getting this?
NEW.DEFTONES.ALBUM.
the sooner they release it, the better
i cannot wait.
yes but the build up can ruin via high expectation. like snw.
but im still super pumped and have a feeling it will be well rounded and true sounding.
they could shit on all album...
but i want the song which is the begining music of the ''deftones in studio'' videos..
its enough for me.....

ya..... :'(
two albums worth of material....SWEET! and for everyone poo-pooing vega, get over it. chi will be on the record and get his props but whats so wrong about a new influence? when chi comes back, they just incorporate those songs to chis style. This has worked well for bands like RHCP who have had a revolving door of guitarists with hugely different styles.
Chi's bass playing was never anything I couldn't live without.
don't get me wrong, I hope someday he makes a recovery,
but his playing doesn't make or break deftones' sound. I don't care who plays bass on the new album, as long as someone does and it finally gets releases.
I'm pretty sour that they didn't ask me to fill in, as a matter of fact.
well, Oct 09 in deftones time means it'll be out march 2010 if we're lucky(& we're usually not)
Bunch of emotional girls here, if and when Chi can return he will. Until then who are you to question the rest of the band and the decisions they make. "It doesn't feel right w/o Chi" grow up.
to be honest i'm really glad they're keeping the band going. i thought what happened to Chi would be the end of deftones

I think a lot of you guys need to dust yourselves off and move on. Its what your favorite band is doing after all. I think Sergio will do a kick ass job. I'd like to hear new shit with and without Chi to see Deftones with a different element. Its a really shitty situation, yes. I'm really pulling for Chi too, but realistically if he were to rejoin the band its far into the future. It could be YEARS. That's if he makes significant progress, and is mentally rehabilitated from the whole ordeal. Not to mention if he still wants to do it and not retire after all the bullshit he's been through. Gotta focus on the present, and still give best wishes and prayers to Chi and family. Just be happy that they are carrying on which is something I wasn't sure would happen.

there is nothing 'immature' about someone feeling like something is missing, different etc.. shit - even chino felt that way.. should he 'grow up' too? i never expected the guys to quit and chi wouldn't want them to do that. i am happy for the guys.. they gotta keep going and support their brother chi however they can thru his healing process..
i can see you asking everyone to please 'be realistic' - but 'grow up'?? - seriously... i don't find that anyone who has said it feels different has come across as someone that needs to grow up...
but - that's just me.. who knows.
hope chi gets better. I also hope the album gets released within the next year or so. maybe all of you who are so chapped about how long the album is gonna take should just get into some other bands in the meantime. broaden your horizons a bit.

God help us! We want Deftones in 2009! I can wait 'till October, but no more!!
All this reading made my mind go crazy..
I really want to hear Chi's material on the new album, but sure it'll be good to hear Deftones with the new style that would bring Sergio... if they record some songs with him (I haven't read anything saying that he's recording with them, but he probably will do it)
And for sure, if Chi isn't able to play on the next shows, Sergio will be doing pretty good job as a filling bass player, although I'm not sure if Chi will want to continue playing with them (but I think he will!)
as you can see, i have now a mess in my mind.... :D :D :D
so i'll shut up now... and sing ("SHOVE IT! SHOVE IT! SHOVE IT ASIDE!!!)
and pray for Chi. :)
