I think it's a fair question b/c I think about it all the time...
I would say your average 20-30 year old has at least "heard" of the Deftones. I'd also say they can't name a single song by the band, nor would they recognize their music. On the slight possibility they are familiar w/ the Deftones' music, they either know Change and/or Back to School...or they know EVERYTHING by the Deftones (i.e. they're like us hahah)
Deftones are one of those bands where their fans aren't lukewarm. No one buys a Deftones CD on a whim. They buy it with a purpose and with devotion.
Although they've been around as long as Korn and are better than Korn, they are not as big as Korn. But damn, if you really like music, the Deftones are WAY more RESPECTED than Korn.
It's rare to find people who talk shit on the Deftones. And when those people do appear, they're usually uninformed and unfamiliar with the music.
Anyways, the Deftones have won a Grammy, they have sold platinum records, they have headlined major tours. But at the end of the day, they're a music-lover's band, not your average pop-junky's band.

Mostly everyone that I know has heard of the Deftones. But I cant also bet they haven't actually listened to them. They are a well known band and are well respected from the people that I have run across. Most of my friends enjoy them, though not as much as me. I always thought Deftones as the worlds biggest cult band. Because while they don't have as much fans as your mainstream band nor sell millions and millions of records worldwide, they do have a truly dedicated fan base. Even professional music critics reserve a special spot for the Deftones and they recognize their special sound.

Exactly. Maybe once every 6-7 months I'll have a random encounter with someone who notices my tattoo or something. It's rare though. One of the weirdest ones I had was with a boss at work. When I first started there maybe 3 years ago now, he noticed my tattoo and said he liked them. He's like 35-40 years old or some shit. I was like "Fuck offfff.." but he was cool. He's into everything. Good taste. I've seen him at Deftones shows and he's always seeing bands live.

Deftones are respectable, as it was already mentioned. Korn is loved and respected only by Korn fans, and the same can be said about many other bands on alternative scene

I know exactly what you're saying. Only like 4 of my mates listen to Deftones and even then only one of them is a huge fan like I am. I know a lot of people who've heard of them but usually they're like "yea they're that band who done Back To School" although saying that, loads of bands I've spoke to always give em huge props. I'm talking bands like Misery Signals, As I Lay Dying, Breed 77, Mnemic and this band I know called Profane - bands who you wouldn't associate with Deftones at all.
I hardly ever hear Deftones songs when I go to the rock/metal clubs in my city either. Except at this one place near me cos the DJ always puts BQAD on whenever I'm there cos I've requested it so much :P
Anyway, to answer the original question, I agree with everyone else who's said they're a well respected and huge band amongst their fans and... anyone who knows their shit about music I guess haha :)

Most of my friends and people I meet know who they are and they'll have like one or maybe two albums but to have a proper conversation with people about the Deftones is kinda rare.....when they come to the UK I don't know who will go with me...most people seem to have been into them around Around the Fur/ White Pony eras and lost interest when Kerrang! stopped playing their music videos... I reckon if I went upto a 15 year old kid today they would've heard of the Deftones but would not be able to name a single song by them...ohhhh how things have changed from when I was 15 :-(

Personally I don't try and get people into them. I got a couple mates of mine into them without trying too much. One really liked them after a while. They really take time to get into I think. There's something about them that just clicks really. I can't just play somebody a tune by them or something and expect them to be blown away. That was never what happened with me. I thought they were kinda shitty at first. If I'm gonna play them when there's other people about though then I'll do it properly. If we're going for a long drive at night then i'll stick White Pony or s/t on or something. A friend of mine is really into all music and he became a fan from me playing that shit in the car. Usually on drugs.
I'll say for sure that one thing that appealed to me back in the day was the image. It was around White Pony time when I was going online and reading up on them and shit.. really making an effort. I think if I hadn't checked them out properly then I may not have been as into them as I eventually was. They used to look really fucking cool, you know? I can understand how people now would see them now and just think it's a bunch of fat geezers bumming about. They can sound truly awful at times, but as a hardcore fan you kind of get de-sensitised (sp?) to bum notes and stuff like that.
It's really kinda hard to explain I guess. I love them. They're one of the most important things in my life. Their albums have been like a soundtrack to my life for the past 8 or 9 years or so. I've grown up with them in the background really. We go back a long way.
To me they're huge. A truly amazing band who still excite me. I can understand why others just wouldn't get it though so I don't try to force them on people and shit.

i'd say they're more popular than mudvayne(they havent went platinum yet), & a bit less than slipknot.
i do think their best selling days are over, unless something unexpected happens. i see them as about a popular as megadeth, in the sense that their best selling days are gone, yet they still have that loyal fanbase suport & are still very influential(like deftones). same can be said about slayer, odly enough slayer has never went platinum. 3 gold albums. they're another band that will always have their diehard following, even if their album sales are way down

I seem to find it difficult to meet a guy who likes Deftones. They seem to like metal and rock and when I mention Deftones they're like 'I quite like back to school but I wouldn't call myself a fan' then I am completely put off.

I usually have to introduce girls that I date to deftones. They always say they hate them. I ask the girls to just give deftones a fair chance, that sometimes you just have to get used to their sound before you can really appreciate their music. But it never works. They always end up HATING the band because I like them so much. Refusing to listen, getting mad at me if I try to play their music when we are together. Yet I have to listen to their music.
Also, multiple times these same girls have ended up liking deftones after we broke up. Usually because they meet someone else who also likes deftones and they have been exposed so much that they finally understand the band. Its bull shit. It happens like that every time.

Here in Germany they are not really famous. I just met couple of people who have heard of Deftones (okay one who digged them is Austrian ^^).
For me it's always the biggest underground band ever and I actually like it. Okay, sometimes it's strange that you actually have no one that really cares about them as much as one does and you can't talk bout it at all.
One time I was in a club on the rock floor and asked them to play Deftones, they told me that this is no "real party" music. But playing Chop Suey and stuff ^^. That's the thing here.
Deftones are just a special way of music and not many people have the key to enter this special atmosphere. They just hear crap and use words like depressive and so on. Deftones go far beyond this...
One time I saw a guy who looked like a nerd with that official Deftones backpack - I was stunned :D
2 platinum albums, 3 albums have made the US Top 10, and a Grammy award. Popular band? Yes. Their popularity might be on the decline at the moment, but they're still popular. Plus they're one of the only bands from their genre and era to be critically acclaimed.

Not to mention the fact that they are still together, and even added a member after their 2nd-3rd albums. the only line up changes in Deftones occurred before Adrenaline, I'm sure we can all agree that that's hardly even relevant. Let us hope I haven't jinxed Chi Cheng by posting this, the poor old fellow. Praying for you always man.
