hm, tough one. for me it's a toss upp between hexagram, lovers and good morning beautiful. I voted hexagram though because it's the first one I heard from the album.
I voted Battle Axe... The bridge on that song is awesome.

minerva...ONLY because i think they tapped ito some un trotted ground with this song. Its sort of a triumph song compared to others of despair and longing...sort of like saying theres hope beyond the darkness. but my second choice would be bloody cape....that shit sets you up for a severe beat down

i personally dont like to deprive myself but i had a big gap with deftones once, -a about ayear and a half after wp i put them down until s/t because i was into minerva, but then i didnt really like s/t so i didnt start listening to them at all until may 2005, and i rediscovered their music literally! it was like re-uniting with an old friend er something that i had known since i was 10 years old. kinda cheesy i know.
but yeah thats kewl you'll have a great time when you listen again :)

Actually, I agree with Variable. I've always felt that S/T was their laziest album. Many of the songs only have like two real parts to them and several songs sound like rehashes of older songs. It's definitely not worthless though. Anniversary is one of my favorite Deftones songs and is really what makes that album for me. Still, I'd have to say it's their weakest effort.
I don't dislike any Deftones album. In fact, I love them all.. White Pony being obviously my favorite... but my least favorite of all is SNW.
Man some of you are just crazy. Look, here is the way I see it. Your opinion is your own, and that's cool with me. But Adrenaline was an amazing record. Looking back at it, its only mediocre but for being a bands first album, in the time period it was released. It was amazing. Around the fur was a great progression. A really great record. Plus they started to push into a whole new territory with BQAD. Then White Pony. A master piece. A truly timeless great album. I really cant say enough good things about White Pony, so I wont even try.
But to go from the progression of those 3 albums. To what ST was. Its just fucking embarrassing. They progressed. They went from being average, but just ahead of their time(adrenaline). To really putting out an amazing piece of art (WP). To, crap ( ST ). Every deftones album has some flop songs on it. But to me ST is the other way around, all flops with a couple exceptions. Minerva and Bloody cape are pretty good songs. Battle Axe is one of their best ever. And everything else is just garbage ( although I might have to listen to anniversary again because so many of you are vouching for it and I cant even remember how it goes)
AND THEN. SNW. SNW is a truly great album. Yeah hole in the earth sucked. But pretty much the rest of the album is some of their strongest work. It blows my mind that you guys cant see that. They just finally got it right. Kept it simple, and made an album front their heart. ST was all about being that nu metal band that maverick wanted them to be. SNW was about deftones.

Yeah I was like WTF too. I was embarrased to call myself a deftones fan. I thought the band was done. Then they totally rocked my world with SNW. It really is a much better album. Variable, dude, you gotta give s/t another spin. That record is so dark and just fucking hauntingly beautiful. Sure, some songs might not be up to par with others they wrote in the past, but try and appreciate it for what it is, rather than what its not. The thing about masterpieces, and White Pony is a masterpiece despite what anyone may say, is that the album that follows is extremely hard to once again achieve the same praise or even better that the previous album did. Few bands have ever done this and in my opinion, Deftones did a fine job doing a follow up to White Pony. In no ways is it a fuck up or a piece of shit. But, everyone is allowed to have an opinion, let alone express it. I was just trying to see what it was that you loathed about it so much.

Rats Rats Rats, just a song to appeal to all those crying about how deftones are not hard anymore. but like Cherry Waves and Kimdracula ect, those are amazing songs.

Also I got into the Defones by listening to SNW. Thought it was a great album. Then I listened to White Pony. I was amazed, it was a trillion times better. Then Adrenaline and ATF. Those sounded very different, but better than SNW as well. Then came ST. I heard it was their worst album. It blew me away. I'd masturbate to all the songs all day long.

And too fucking many people are saying they like HITE. So pretty much most of you are kids who still think NU Metal is cool and just need to grow up a bit. Now I understand why someone in another thread was talking about how they got slammed for saying linkin park sucked. I like some of you a lot better when I don't know how bad your taste in music is. OK, now you're getting a little too far out there for me. How is HITE "nu metal"? Shitty video aside, it's a great song. Allmusic.com hits the nail on the head:

It begins with a wall of feedback and thunderously distorted guitars accented by rim shots and cymbal fire before giving way to a skeletal six-string figure that seems barely able to support Moreno's singing, which combines the euphoria of a young, less pretentious Bono with the attack of, well, the Deftones. So, you hate WGTB and HITE but like Pink Cellphone and Ratsx3? I like Ratsx3 too, but as heavy songs go, WGTB puts it to shame. Lyrically better (come on, how do you NOT love the lyrics to WGTB?) and has the dark, brutal and haunting Deftones sound that Ratsx3 is missing. And I'll take EVERY song in Deftones catalogue over Pink Cellphone. EVERY LAST ONE! That's not even a Deftones song. To me, it's a stupid little beat Chino made on garage band. Then, to make it really KICK, he added Annie Hardy rambling on about anal sex. At least ALL of the members of Deftones wrote WGTB and HITE.
Variable, it seems that you listened to S/T in 03 and were so disappointed you never really gave it a fair shake again. Understandable. But, it is a good album. I'm glad you're at least giving it another shot.

Ok, I misread your post on Rats. My mistake. But the fact that you like Pink Cellphone over WGTB, one of the best heavy songs they've ever done, is downright laughable. Not to mention countless other great songs they've done. And then you have the nerve to tell us we have bad taste in music? LMAO.
And saying a song sucks because "well, it does. that's all there is to it" is kind of a cop-out. Come on, tell us why the songs suck and I'll give you reasons why they don't suck. And try to do it without throwing around the term "nu-metal" either.
Ok, right now, I'll tell you why WGTB is great song:
1. Stephen Riffs: That DEVASTATING chorus riff. You write something like that, Variable. Go ahead.
2. Lyrics: "Somethings wrong with you, I hope we never do meet again", "Yeah, if you like that we can ride on a black horse/A great new wave hesperian death horse" "l will call back/I forget where the phone is at/I'll talk to you when I get back/Yeah, when I get back I will talk". Brilliance!
3. The bridge: All about Frank's awesome haunted house synths and disconnecting phone sounds over Steph's moody, Pink Maggit-esque riff while Chino screams bloody murder.
And, please, no one come in here and say "oh my god you guys are so opinionated why do you care what other people think?". This is the one of the reasons to have a message board. To discuss, debate and argue opinions.

I never said you loved PCP. But you do think it's a fun song, yet you find WGTB (and most of S/T) to be shit. So that proves you do love PCP. The drug PCP, that is. You've been smoking alot of it. Regardless of what their intentions were when writing these songs (silly electronica song vs mindblowing bruiser), you favor one over the other.
And, yes, Adrenaline and ATF have tons of great heavy songs. I never said WGTB was the best. I said it was one of the best. But, amazingly enough, some of those, like Headup, are the DEFINITION of nu-metal era Tones (great, now I'm throwing it around). I just find it funny that you big up their nu-metal era, and then lambast S/T for trying to sound too nu-metal.

Just because the conclusion of an argument is one thing, it does not make the premise of the argument the same thing. No, I don't like WGTB. Yes, I can tolerate PCP. No, I don't like ST. Yes, I do like SNW. But that doesn't mean that I think PCP is better than WGTB. And it doesn't mean that I think every song on SNW is better than every song on ST.
If I was in a music appreciation class and someone asked me to compare WGTB and PCP. I would give the award to WGTB. It's a better song by definition. But that doesn't make it good. WGTB was supposed to be taken seriously. Supposed to be a good metal song. So compare it to other serious and good metal songs that Deftones have put out, and suddenly its crap. Pink Cell phone is just chino being stoned and wanting something simple and stupid to listen to and sing to. Not meant to be metal, not meant to be taken very seriously. I chalk that one up right next to chinos drunk ass singing "sexy back". Therefore in reality, its completely illogical to say I like PCP better than WGTB.

Ah, the semantics game. I honestly believe that "affirming the consequent" doesn't apply in this situation (ROFL are we even talking about Deftones anymore?!?!?!). To me, liking one thing more than another thing is the same as thinking the former is better than the latter. Don't they fundamentally relate in some kind of way? Where's the difference? You're right about WGTB and PCP being an unfair comparison, but comparing SNW and S/T is different. Because when they made both albums, their intentions were to make the best albums possible. Chino wasn't approaching ALL of SNW going "hey, this will be a stupid little fun album". So, liking SNW over S/T is the same as thinking SNW is better than S/T.
We know they went through turmoil writing both S/T and SNW. However, I feel like they were one component while writing S/T. There is video footage of them all hanging out and writing the music together. Can you say the same for SNW? S/T had one producer. That's why it sounds like a cohesive record. SNW didn't. That's why the production is all over the place.
Also, I never said Chino was the greatest lyricist of all time. No one said he had better lyrics than Lennon or Morrison. That doesn't mean his lyrics aren't often brilliant, though. Time magazine did call his lyricism "furiously intelligent". Does Maverick have stock in Time magazine too, just like allmusic.com?

Total RESPECT, but how the hell is "Hexagram" that low on the poll???? ??? I voted "Bloody Cape" but Hex was so close I started typing in. Only reason I'm surprised is the appreciation and awe expressed in and outta these threads on this track. Surprised out the gills, fsho!!! Damn! Deathblow ahead even. Not that Deathblow blows, lol. To each his/her own, whole record is a masterpiece, IMO 8)

Hexagram is awesome, but there's just better songs on that record.
And there's another opinion.... just like mine. :)
