So yea, whenever I meet someone who isn't clued up on Deftones and hasn't heard any of their music, i'm always stuck with the dilemma of recommending a song to them which, on first impressions will give them an idea of what they're missing out on...
So my question to all you guys is, which ONE song do you think perfectly sums up the Deftones sound? Which song embodies Deftones down to a T? and why?
I often recommend Feiticeira but that means I'm stuck with the new dilemma of pronouncing and spelling it correctly to them. But that's another issue :D
So come on... what do you guys think?
Well it depends. To my metal buddies I will show them Engine No. 9 and 7 Words. To other people they must all listen to Digital Bath and Knife Prty. After being blown away by Chino's singing on the latter two mentioned, they know whats up.
why can't f**k can't you recommend an album, not a song?
Because most people don't have patience to listen to a whole album based on someone's recommendation.
That's the whole point. I'm asking which song you think gives them the whole deftones "experience" the most.
Be Quiet and Drive
If they don't like it, then they're gay.
change. i'm not original
but whole deftones music philosophy is there
^^BQAD is also typical
Yeah I agree. I guess the singles would be a good starting point for deftones noobs. But i don't think i'd recommend anything beyond S/T
bqad

Word, lol. I think BQAD has the loud guitars, floating drums and the relaxed vocals wich make deftones. Although Chino can scream pretty hectic at times.

Agreed. Quintessential deftones song in my opinion. That structure, the lyrics, the way it all builds into a crescendo and that BAM.
Knife prty
Be Quiet And Drive
My Own Summer
Change
Hexagram
Good Morning, Beautiful
I think that ATF/WP/S/T are all fairly accesible for 'tones newcomers, then if they like they should try Adrenaline/SNW
they are just a bunch of bastards...
I was introduces to Deftones with Digital Bath.
I also think the song depends on the person.
^^ true i forgot to mention that
I guess i'd recommend the more heavier songs to black hoodie wearing sweaty moshers with pubic-hair beards.
No offence guys.
bqad is a great place to start, shows both sides
dai the flu is also a good place to start
really, they''ve done so many styles of music you cant just give one song, you gotta tell people to listen to at least 4 or 5 different songs, to even get a feel

Yup. It all depends on what the person likes. I actually did an entire speech on this in my communications class. It was to persuade people that they sould listen to deftones. And I did a video for it which outlines their different genres. check it out...

Id say ask the person what they dig, then reccomend something from that same genre that deftones have covered.
i'd probably recommend "change".
just a great fucking song.
Mmm...I'd go with 'Be Quiet And Drive (Far Away)', after telling people Deftones are a unique band incorporating many different styles of music.
BE QUIET AND DRIVE
HEADUP
7 WORDS
MINERVA
CHANGE
DIGITAL BATH
KNIFE PARTY
BEWARE
RIVIERE
Knife Prty
Passanger
Deathblow
My own summer
Lifter
When ever i introduce varies people into Deftones I've noticed they always give Be Quiet the thumbs up.
i tried change, it didn't work
first thing to do, ask the n00b if he's a sepultura/tool/soad/giant drag/incubus fan, if they say yea then ask them to give headup/passenger/mein/pink cellphone/bqad-acoustic a listen. people tend to listen and pay attention to stuff that's a little familiar.
then go for the covers, if the n00b is a sade/duran duran/weezer/whatever fan, make the lowlife listen to no ordinary love/the chauffeur/say it ain't so/whatever. these are really really good covers, i'm sure the n00b will be n00b no more in a while.
if none of the above work and you're talking to a supern00b who's been living under a rock for 20 years, ask them to listen to 7 words/engine no 9 (for the metalheads), bqad/change (for girly girls), anniversary of an uninteresting event/teenager (for patient girly girls) pink cellphone/lucky you (for techno people) street carp (for teh punkz)
easy peasy
tell him hes a cunt.
Can't Even Breathe
when i was in highschool i tried with B2S and this worked very good ;) Now i alweys propose something from WP like Change, Digital Bath, Knife Prty and when somebody ask my on CD not only song i give WP, this is the best way i think :) Ofcourse deepends of personality so not alwyes WP...like kalhan said ;)

LOL! Sounds like a conversation I've had before...
'Oh I like that Change song'
The good thing about Deftones is that they have so many diverse moods/types of song you can recommend one to a friend whoi's into say metal like Elite or WGTB - or if you've got a more mainstream-rock friend you can recommend stuff like Minerva.
Change and Digital Bath hooked me. =o)
i agree on Feiticeira
to be honest i find deftones a hard sell and can't be arsed to listen to people cussing them so I don't even bother, unless i've got a girl on the go, i'll inevitably end up putting deftones on in my room with her at some point. I just think deftones are an aquired taste and they aren't a band you can just shove down peoples throats and expect them to like them.
i know this never was ever considered to be a song just a demo or what have you. but on the bob ezrin demos i belive its after mein, or so it is on my ipod. that song, the music in itself is fuckin off the chain and it grooves . i cant put into words how this song sounds or makes me feel when i listen to it. but i seriously thought of many ways they could have wrote it with lyrics and maybe some sick ass samples composed into it and i duno if its just me but that song should deffinatly make it on an album as should finger of death in the future. seriously who agrees.
i prefer finger of death to most of SNW, just because it's quite a rare guitar riff and the drumming gets real good towards the end. i dont know what the other demo you're talking about is tho
my first def songs were bored and my own summer
for a friend of mine it was change
