I heard that in 2000 was a easy year to be popular in music. Record sales were up for any artist. so maybe this is why deftones kinda had eposure. Now I think record sales are down 70% in the business then it should be at.
True but WP seemed to be a "right place right time" kind of album and Maverick also seemed to pour a lot of money in marketing wise.
In my time as a Deftones fan that seemed to be their major moment of exposure to the masses.
yeah and wp came out in 2000 so yeah right place right time.
Good finds, cool to watch.
The first video is from the Internet House Party pre-show.
i really wish deftones still had that amount of exposure and popularity...
I don't.
As long as they are putting out music, making enough cash to live well, and most importantly happy and healthy, I like where they are at.
Wish them all the success in the world but part of the reason I'm a Deftones fan is cause they never were mainstream.
Yeah I would never want them to sell out. They are still very well known undergound. Alot of people I talk to in my day to day life I ask them have you ever listen or heard of deftones? And 95% of people say yes I like them. The only thing I miss from the WP era is not how popular they were, but How Killer the crowed was at the 2000-2001 shows.
Not saying 2006-2007 wasnt killer but I just think 2000-2001 era, people seemed more active at the concerts.

Damn straight.
For some reason Frank just annoys me, there's just something about him. But those were really cool video's. Thank you.
gettin recognition and success for your work doesnt make you a sell out...

TRUISM
truthiness
lets face it, the deftones made a killer record at a time when people wanted to hear this stuff. thats why they were popular (and still are to an extent, their singles still get played on the radio). it was like a blip on the radar for them, nothing else. sure S/T deuted high on the charts but fell off quickly and SNW did nowhere near the sales of either of them (wish i could find up to date stats on this). they are and always will be a non-mainstream act (i hesitate to call them underground) unless they decide to sell out and have nickelback write their songs.
how come in ticketmaster.com then refer deftones as rock\pop? you kno who esle is considered in the same class!?! Panic At the Disco!!!! what the hell! thats just a plain insuilt!

Of course not as they already have both.
Unless your talking grammies or top 20 hits that is but that would usually involve making hit singles and scoring big radio and TV support.Problem is recognition and "success" by definition in todays music world seldom involves good music as opposed to good marketing.
I don't think many would deny much of the success around the White Pony era was in large due to the fact it was their most marketed album and the timing was near perfect.
Thats not really true recognition or popularity in my eyes, it's good marketing and being in a trend.
true. alls i know is that i love me some deftones and i wish the world would pay more attention to creative music. can anyone explain the whole timing and marketing behind WP and why/how it was so good. I was only 11-12 years old at the time and had just started to listening to deftones. i really wasnt very aware of marketing and such at that time.

I think Many of us are under the same conditions. I was 12 at the 00's.
Jeez guys you're making me feel old ;)
Great vids btw!
Yeah I remember i first heard them when i was even younger..a friend brougt over the matrix on vhs and before the movie, they had an ad for the soundtrack. sure enough, a clip of my own summer came on...awesome riff, awesome screaming, chino had the cool hair..i thought they were the coolest motherfuckers id ever seen (still do to some extent)..what can i say, i was young. then i was reintroduced to them a couple years later when a friend told me to buy white pony. good advice from that friend.
i was 15 when white pony came out. I must say the first time I listen to the deftones was in 97, when my older brother would drive me around in his car all the time playing non stop deftones and i guess it rubbed off on me. But I agree it was the year 2000 was a great year to make a record, thats it.
nice vids.
long live deftones.
I was 18 when W/P came out but it's so much cooler that people who were younger than me got into them as I wish Deftones were about when I was 10/12 all I had to listen to was shit as I kinda missed the Grunge era by a few years.
I was 15 at the time when White Pony came out, I remember that they would play change everyday on k-rock, it also helped that radio and tv played more rock, i think that also played a big part in the album being such a success, now you have to be gay like fall out boy to get played.
cool. never seen any of these... thanks man
What's up with chi's voice in the first video? His balls haven't dropped yet?
