Guys, as most of you know, I'm studying to be a sound engineer. The point is that I think I've got enough knowledge so as to make the like linus demos sound better. My idea is to remaster them all from losslesst quality & to lossless quality and add a few bonus to it. I'd like to make it a new artwork based on the old one, with front, back, inside and all that shit. SO I'm requesting:
_People who has graphic design talent to do this (Rutje, I remember you were awesome man, If you're reading this please contact me).
_High quality pictures of the deftones old school era to make the artwork look cool.
_Useful information such as where some of the demos come from (I have most of it anyway).
That's it for now. I think I'll start working on this on sunday.
And MAYBE a bonus dvd with all the pre-adrenaline footage and such.
Awesome, good luck... Looking forward to it.
i think this idea sounds awesome.
do u have the demos?
what happened to it?
4demos already mastered.
once again. there is no such thing as the like linus demos. some bootleg which had all demos on it was called like linus. instead make an logical demo collection or something.

I know it's not an album/official release, still doesn't matter. It's a classic name, plus it sounds really good . I'm nobody to change tradition.
by the way, 6/18 demos done. I'll try to do some more for the weekend.
cool.. i'm thinking about putting together a TV appearances compilations with all the songs they eve performed on TV (like Letterman, Conan, Leno, NPA, Much Music etc etc)

wow, a really good Idea. I think defhead was on something similar, maybe you 2 should gather forces.
And yeah, once i get the work done I'll be sure to send you all the material so you can do the work sly, thanks! and thanks to the supporters of the proyect.
Can't wait until the final product is released. Thanks to everyone contributing. This is going to have an awesome turn out.

This will be a dvd, as it is tv appearences. I have probably over 4 hours of clips from tv shows. Not just performances but interviews too. Some of the stuff I was thinking about is like the Lepers Disease TV, WAAF, MTV Sports, Much Music, Musiq Plus, Headbangers Ball, 120 Minutes.......
Most of it everyone has seen at some time or another. What I am trying to do though is make sure that is the top quality possible without going into the TV stations vaults.
Plus I can't find my VHS of BTS on Conan so if someone has VHSlet me know :)
should we add their 1992 live show?
and there a small clip of the band playin in 1992, the song some people. perhaps if we can get a hold of the whole thing..
that would be 1990... no that doesnt belong there.
i understand def-head. i was thinking of at least these:
digital bath - leno
change - letterman
back to school - conan
be quiet and drive - conan
hole in the earth - conan
minerva - carson daly
bloody cape - carson daly
headup - npa 1998
my own summer - npa 1997
if only tonight - mtv icon
korea - musique plus
change - musique plus
digital bath - musique plus
headup - musique plus
change - much music
feiticeira - much music
digital bath - much music
be quiet and drive / the joker - adam sandler
my own summer - recovery
be quiet and drive - recovery
i'm really meaning special studio perfromances for tv. not really all interviews. would be really cool to have something nice. also like mtv sports is just a few live songs from a show, broadcasted on tv.... that doesnt count. what do you think def-head? which am i missing?
i would put MOS from 01-20-98 great performance plus interview rom the bathroom
I remember hearing some songs that had very low, demo quality recordings of their songs at the time, as well as some songs that were used in Adrenaline. I remember one of those songs was the S.O.D. cover. I also remember the Root recording to be way different than the recorded version that they did for maverick which had Nosebleed. I don't know if I'm making any sense but If anyone knows what I'm talking about maybe those songs should be in that collection of songs your suggesting.
defhead: owwyeah!!
dude, 'we' know about all demos ever made/surfaced. you are right indeed. most fans here know all demo's from the so called like linus bootleg or many others which featured all early demos
root and nosebleed were recorded by ross robinson in 1994 and were different than the terry date/adrenaline versions.
Oraled Live (http://www.sendspace.com/file/a7ykoe) ?
what about it? it's a live song. not a demo
This is the version of Root I mentioned. I don't have any info on the recording of this but it sounds very old to be considered a demo. If anyone has any info on this, let us know. Enjoy.

damn i've never heard this one... and no-one responded yet. does anyone know about this version of root?
I came across this recording of Root thru P2P. I was actually searching for any live version of Root and I found this.

Sounds like the 94 demo version of Root. It was on a cassette with Nosebleed.
Produced By Ross Robinson and deftones. The tape is marked as a "Maverick Advance" tape but actually it's a Demo Tape, the 2 songs are slightly different to the ones on the Adrenaline record.
Here is a link to compare:

Well def-head... that's what i thought too. Now that i've listened to it a couple of times i'm sure. It's the Ross Robinson Recording

so i downloaded ur version and compared both...i can tell the difference..ur remastered version sounds cleaner and louder..i noticed the drums have gotten louder and u can hear the crash or the hyhat! the guitar sound louder and heavier and so does the bass.. good job! how did u do it though?
I'm glad you noticed all the exact things that were my goal to correct in the mix haha. I used a mastering plug-in called Izotope Ozone and just messed with settings until I got the sound I was looking for. Here is the flac:

I think they sound great, I tested it out in my car and it fits on a mix CD quality wise fine.
I am using vadimo's source for the demo's, not the bootleg because they sound cleaner in my opinion. Though there are some tracks from '93 that are only from the actual demo CD (venison, freaks, ect), these tracks sound fine enough to remaster. I am in need of this tape, I never got it.

Songs: 01 - Like Linus / 02 - Hump / 03 - Some People / 04 - Plastic

you know Feit (? ? ?), I actually compared both waveforms of the LL comp sourced flac and the .flac of this one, and my guess was that the only difference is that the second one has a different EQ, so I guess they are from the same file.

thanks!

Look at the deftones D&R thread, you'll find it. It's time some of you hear a previow of the work in progress, don't you think so? Venison.
http://www.mediafire.com/?nniybtmnmzc
I'd like to hear some critics, so if you feel something isn't on its place just let me know, and I may fix it.
^^^
Wow. I just played that and then played both mp3 versions I have of Venison and it sounded brilliant. it sounded like it could have been recorded in the same sessions as Adenaline, its more to that quality. The bass was clearer, vocals clearer. Especially at the end. On the mp3 versions I have that last vocal by Chino sounds really garbled. But your version sounds very crisp. Well done and thanks.
thanks for noticing it man. I'll tell you, some credit of the clarity goes to removing some db's to the highest frecuency bands; They not only have a really small part of sonic information (just part of the hi-hat and minor details), but are where the big part of the noise takes place. Oh, this and giving the sound more corpse, and shit. I opted not to use compresors, since I suspect it has already been overcompressed. I may use a limiter at the end of the proccess so that every track has the same volume.
-------------------------------------------------
SO today I woke up with lots of time and did 4 more songs, now we have 10/18. and will remaster that unknown song that was posted @defsacto many years ago.
Since we're pushing to do a "bonus" dvd , I think somebody should do the menus, editing, and things. We should contact nuno to get his support and to help us with searching people that may collaborate (and obviously don't know about this forum); It would be nice to get pre-adrenaline images and such stuff. Hell, I've even contacted dominique (older bassist) to see if he could help us. I think an image collection for the dvd would make it a complete work.
Concerning to the video stuff, this is what some video collectors lists:
1990.xx.xx Guild theatre sacto
1994.03.28 Live Virginia Beach, VA
1994.04.30 Live Berkely Square - Berkeley, CA
1994.07.01 Live San Francisco, CA
1994.12.03 Live Cactus Club - San Jose, CA
1995.05.08 Live Nile Theater - Mesa, AZ
I think I have some tracks of the virginia one in mpeg, wouldn't mind at all using them. I could also audio-remaster those fuckers (any video remasters here? Then THAT would be really useful)
Ok, just discuss ideas.

Venision sounds great anyway. I've only listened to the original a handful of times but I remember the quality didn't sound this good! I look forward to hearing the rest :)
sounds like everyone has some awesome ideas, i'd love to help out in some way.
So I was going through some 96 shows today and found something I had forgotten about that I think is cool. Just a 30sec clip of Plese Let Me Get What I Want (live):

I don't know. Someone personally recorded directly from the tapes, and whoever made the LL comp recorded from tapes as well so they should be pretty similar I just thought the newer transfers sounded a tad clearer but it could be all in the EQ and the way the tapes were transferred.
i have some silver discs with the demo's yeah.
hey deftones-argentina, what happened to ur remastering project?

Are you still working on your project? ???
not for the moment, I should put a deadline for myself on this so I can finally finish da fucking thing . The thing that lowered my enthusiasm is that I had like half of the remaster done, and then learned more about the remastering process and realised I did some stuff wrong and needed to redo it. I think before 2010 ends I'll finish it. Maybe as a Christmas present? who knows.
PS: I also need to finish a remaster for a V fella, I'm not forgetting about that one also.
bump :P
would still love have a HQ like linus compilation
still on hold, but lately i've been back on the remastering game so you never know. just don't expect anything really near since i'm still recording my band's new record, but I DO want those motherfuckers in a better sound as much as you all do.
