what an amazing album...track for track. it's so varied and it manages to flow together so fucking well. i really don't know why i haven't been paying more attention to this album before now... amazing. go get you knife...
anyways, this is an awesome feeling.
agreed. im looking for the same kind of cohesiveness on the new album... white pony is brilliant.
yeah. white pony is the only album i can listen to every track on.. but its not my favorite album
although i was tripping really hard on mushrooms once and we played white pony. sounded amazing
WTF, why did it took you so long? I mean, it took me a while to let it grow and its been my favourite ever since, but how long do you know this record? It didnt take longer than a month or so for me.
i've had the album for about 5 years. and i've also listened to it quite a bit.
i just never thought that highly of it.
and it's weird. i was really obsessed with SNW when it came out... but i'm having a hard time REALLY enjoying it now. it just doesn't flow as well as WP and S/T. it still has some of the best deftones songs on it, though.
maybe its time to give radiohead another try
i hated them when i first heard them.. and now look at me
haha.
i love how badly you want me to like them... ;)

thats wat ive always said, snw is like a greatest hits compilation, not so cohesive... i really dont dig it much as an album/full work of art.
oh and radiohead is amazing.truth. :)
RX queeeeen!!!
i know the feeling, this happend with me and s/t a couple of months ago. now i listen to it more than any other tones record
White Pony took me ages to get into. Then one day I gave her another try and it just clicked, it really did deserve to get album of the year in Kerrang! Self Titled is still my favourite Deftones album though... I just love the anger and emotion in it. Chino maybe was going through some tough shit during the writing of this album and it really shows on Self Titled. Lot's of anger about romance and the world...
White pony was the first deftones album I listened to in full. It's really great song for song
Feiceteria is a great opener
digital bath is just amazing
elite is one of thier best live songs
knife prty is prob thier best work to date
korea has a great bridge
pink maggit is the best closing song ever
and the rest are just as good, the only song i don't get into is street carp, but even then its lyrics are great
best album ever made.
the word groundbreaking doesn't even cover it
wow, you think so?
I mean it's good, but best album ever made, groundbreaking. Can't say i agree.
same thing happened to me with s/t. I got really into white pony right when it was released. and i still love it today. when s/t came out i was like wft. i hated hexagram and wgtb. now its by far my favorite deftones record.

it's an extreme statement but i totally agree. there's nothing like it. it was an interesting time for the deftones. they were climbing with each album (adren, atf) and then white pony put them on superstar level yet with their own terms.
coreleone, i agree with your analysis but woud like to add that you can't forget the imagery in rx queen. b/w chino's words and the vibe of the song, it's one of their best works. also korea is one of their best too. it's brutal but in a beautiful way....kinda like football. finally we cannot forget "change" - the song that really broke them into the mainstream in my opinion.
interesting little story. elite was the last song they recorded for the album. it was stephs song and everyone felt blah about it. he laid down the guitar and said "figure out what to do w/ it." funny enough that was their grammy!
saturday night wrist - i agree with ya'll, it has a "greatest hits" feeling. some of the songs are pure gold - combat, beware, kimdracula, rats, hite, etc...but for some reason they don't flow well. it's probably a result of writing for three years all over the earth, going through different producers, and basically breaking up. whatever...i like it b/c it portrays their lives. it's true art, although they probably could have made something a lot darker w/ their malibu material.
I'll never understand why Elite was the song which won the grammy.
In my opinion, Wp has some of the greatest songs ever by deftones, but I must admit I don't love every track on the album.
Oh, and to deffend the song, I LOVE street carp, one of my favourites since day 1. The drum lines on it are a bit empty, though

for sure. my fav album of all. changed my life.
and best deftones album. they are what they are ....cause of wp.
my opinion 8)
it may be a but far fetched, and of course there are a lot of albums that are a lot more popular and can appeal to a lot more people.
But taken in the context of the music scene at the time it was released (metal going the way of Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit) what the band did was incredibly brave.
I think back to the first time i heard the record and I knew I'd uncovered the album of my life, the one record that nothing else will come close to matching.
it's the album tha got me into Deftones to begin with. I had Around The Fur and listened to it every now and then but it didn't do that much for me. then I heard Passenger, went out and bought White Pony ASAP and fell in love. today it's still one of my all-time favorite albums and everything I've heard from Deftones/Chino since then, I have compared to White Pony. now I happen to rank SNW as my top Deftones album, but I genuinely think that it's their most fleshed out and thought-through album. it continues right where White Pony ended. it does lack the wild, experimental and free spirit that WP had, though.
White Pony is one of my all time fave albums! I bought it cos of Digital Bath, and after the first listen it didn't leave my stereo for over a year. Not one of the songs is boring and Pink Maggit is the finest album closer ever. Sadly I think it'll be hard for Deftones to beat what they made with White Pony though. I was disappointed when I heard S/T but they got better with SNW so they could prove me wrong...
Deftones is the cure for blind
I think we have to accept that feiticeira only happens once in life. Feel glad the tones are the one who did it.

White Pony had the same effect on me too. When i first got it I listened to it, but quickly sort of scanned through and picked my favorites which were Back to School, Digital Bath, Teenager, Passenger and Change.
Those were pretty much the only tracks Ilistened to. Then I must have been driving while I had the CD in and just let it play through without thinking much of it and relaized that I had been seriously missing out. Like alot of you have said, it just clicked. I was actually pissed at myself for not listening to all the songs for so long. Korea, whichI completely disliked right away, is now the song I can't live without.
It's really strange how it happened. I pretty much love every song on the album except Street Carp. And I love Knife Party but can only bear to listen to half of it because as soon as the chick shrieking comes on I feel like ripping my hair out.
All in all, i really have a deep love for that album though. I listen to it pretty much in full at least once a day.

You know, it might not be so bad in some other song or in a different context. But i just liked Knife Party as it is without it so it sort of ruins it for me when i listen.

for me WP was different, it blowed my mind away after the 1st listen, and it still sounds great. Maybe this is not really my FAVORITE album, but it influenced on my music taste more than anything in this world. It's all about Deftones!
My obsession for Deftones seems to get bigger and bigger by the day, When I'm at work in the stock room sometimes, I can play my MP3 player. I've got over 80gig of music on there but all I ever want to listen to is Deftones over and over again. That Santiago 07 show which was recorded via the sound board, out of all the albums and shit I've listened to this year, the Santiago show has been on continuous repeat since I first heard it... That's my 'album' of the year... Thanks.

That makes me feel so much better about myself. In all honesty, there isn't much that I've listened to other than Deftones since October of 2006. I think all the hype of SNW just rekindled this affinity that has yet to wear off... and truthfully, I can't see it fading anytime soon. What I like about Deftones' albums, which is also reaffirmed by this thread, is that every single album has something different to offer. I feel like for any mood, there is a Deftones song that completely seals the job. They are one band that I have and will continue to wholly love and respect.
And ditto on the upload. ;)
This album is their most cinematic, sensory filled, diverse album. It really stretched their boundries and since then they have been trying to pass it, with little luck [but still good stuff]. The album is very cohesive in that nothing feels out of place. The merch, the marketing, the sounds in between tracks, the tour, everything made sense. I still think Feiticeira is one of their best songs. Very dark album.
Been listening to WP alot in my car... CHI did such a freakin good job composing the bass lines on the album. Every song has great BASS. Serio can not compete!
They hit their creative peak with WP. It's a pretty beautiful record. :)
And what's with a Jeff Buckley fan not liking Radiohead? :P
WP is their weakest album after adrenaline. It's a mixed bag.
Strong songs:
Feiteceria
Digitasl bitch
Elite
Street carp
Korea
Change
Piink Maggit
Back 2 school
Weaker songs:
RX QUEEN
Passenager
Teenager
Knife Party
Boy's Republic
As you can see it has a lot of good songs, but S/T has Hexagram, Minerva, WGTB and Bloody Cape and combined they are stronger than all of the good songs on White Pony. Same for SNW.
Pink Maggit, Korea, Street Carp I still listen to after 10 years. So those in particular they stand the test of time
nope

I loved every song on WP but Passenger took me awhile to get into for some reason. Around the fur is my favorite but WP is really their most ground breaking work.

maybe he did that because knife prty was a rip off of hum's song little dipper.wp was the record that was going to take them to the next level.well,
getting big and known because of a song that's stolen... wouldn't be a good first impression to the big world, not a good way of marketing yourself if it got
out
that happens to me alot...out of the blue i will play a random deftones album hear it through and just more like looking at it from a different angle?

WP is their weakest album after adrenaline. It's a mixed bag.
Strong songs:
Feiteceria
Digitasl bitch
Elite
Street carp
Korea
Change
Piink Maggit
Back 2 school
Weaker songs:
RX QUEEN
Passenager
Teenager
Knife Party
Boy's Republic
As you can see it has a lot of good songs, but S/T has Hexagram, Minerva, WGTB and Bloody Cape and combined they are stronger than all of the good songs on White Pony. Same for SNW.
Pink Maggit, Korea, Street Carp I still listen to after 10 years. So those in particular they stand the test of time
Passenger, Knife Prty and boy's republic aren't weak song...street carp is, theres nothing great about it
At the risk of ostrasizing myself from this community on only my second day posting here, I'm going to say that the only album I like LESS than White Pony is Diamond Eyes.
I was first introduced to Deftones in the Around the Fur era, and at the time I was pretty much exclusively into harder music (I've changed since then, but whatever). Since ATF I have been dissappointed in every new album until after listening to it for nearly a year, and the original tracks that grab my attention almost never end up being the ones I eventually consider my favorites. When WP first came out I really only cared for Elite, Korea, and Passenger. To this very day I am not a big fan of Teenager or Feitecera, they just don't grab me like some of the other ones. After my few months to a year of listening, as previously mentioned, things changed and I began to enjoy the album much more for what it was. Elite became too repetative for me; and Street Carp, RX Queen, and Knife Party eventually surfaced as my favorite tracks on this effort.
Now there are a plenty of good things about WP. When I first started listening they were relatively unknown. With the exception of Be Quiet and Drive and My Own Summer nobody really knew much about them.. at least in my area, others may have experienced things differently out on the west coast. I've never been one of those hipster guys who's always going around saying shit like, "Oh them? Yeah I used to like them.. before they got all mainstream and popular." I hate those people, they're lame. I understand some people do sell out, but new and obscure music doesn't always = good music. Most of my favorite bands and albums are over 10 years old. After WP came out I was GLAD to see more people listening to my favorite band, It was awesome for me! It brought in a lot of the softer fans, and lotsa chicks... And more chicks = more awesomeness at shows ;)
In the long run tho, after all the dust of my original dislike and eventual acceptance of each of their albums settled ATF, SNW, ST, and Adrenaline have all reigned victorious over WP (in that order actually). I can appreciate it for what it is and I like it better than most other bands' albums, but on the Deftones scale it just doesn't cut it for me. I am; however, currently listening to it and digging it :D
